It wasnt long ago that Coal was King. In the early 1980s the industry comprised a workforce of 150,000 in some 150 pits. Go back further to its heyday and coal was the dominant industry and one that underpinned the UKs status of a major industrial power. Coal was the lifeblood of a railway network which moved it from colliery to towns, cities, ports and industrial centres. In this DVD we’ll chart the life and times of King Coal and its movement by Rail .

WHEN COAL WAS KING - The 1930s.

THE POST WAR YEARS - The period from 1947, with new coal wagons and various Industrial steam railways operated by the National Coal Board. Coke works and Collieries in the North East and the South East are featured including the Lambton Railway and Betteshanger Colliery. Austerites and larger tank locos are shown in and around the pit heads.

THE DIESEL ERA - Vacuum braked coal trains and the new ‘merry go round’ operations with Class 20s, 56s, 58s and 60s in the Midlands and North East.

SOUTH WALES - Traditional Coal operations from the Valleys to Swansea Docks with Class 37s.

THE 1990s - the run down of the coal industry and freight operations.

STEAM IN THE 21st CENTURY - with steam haulage in 2015.

COLLIERY CLOSURES AND THE END OF DEEP MINING - The last trains from Thoresby, Hatfield and Kellingley Collieries.

OPEN CAST OPERATIONS - With South Wales and Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen and Cwmbargoed, plus Onllwyn Washery plus Ayrshire featuring Greenburn and Killock branches.

In the late 1960s, 1970s and 1980s the Eastern Region of British Railways was characterised by a number of branch and secondary lines that had changed little since the days of working steam. In this programme we’ll explore the network, travelling from the suburbs of London to Norfolk from where we’ll head across country to Lincoln. On the way we’ll explore the motive power and stations from a bygone era of railway travel.

The programme includes:

East London in the 1960s including the branch from Romford to Upminster and the Palace Gates branch just before closure in 1963 with a Class 31 hauled service.

Stations on the North London line.

Broad Street before closure and Liverpool Street Station in the years before Modernisation.

The Buntingford Branch and main line to Cambridge in the 1960s with freight and passenger workings.

Norwich Station in 1979 and the freight only branch to Lenwade.

The major junction station at March and Whitemoor Yard together with a range of traffic in the 1970s and 1980s including the ‘Deltic Fenman’ railtour, Class 25s, 31s, 20s and 47s.

Peterborough with main line traffic in the pre-electric era. Includes ‘Deltics’together with Class 47s, Class 25s and Class 31s.

Spalding with loco hauled trains, freight and diesel units in the station and its approach lines in the 1970s and 1980s. Sleaford with diesel multiple units in and around the station.

The closed station at Firsby.

A round up of the freight scene in 2016 with a brief look at the major traffic flows.

Ely to March Freight traffic at Ely Station and North Junction and on the line through Manea to March with a wide variety of workings and haulage. In addition we look back to the early 1990s when first generation dominated including Class 20s and 47s.

Wellingborough on the Midland Main Line Freight is featured in recent months on the climb to Sharnbrook and Wellingborough Station and its north approach. In addition we look back to the 1990s, and the last loco hauled workings. Class 60s are shown in their early years along with Class 58s.

Tonbridge and its yard Freight to and from the busy yard is featured in 1991 compared with 2016. Class 20s, 33s, 47s, 56, 60, 73 and an 09 shunter are shown in action on a wide variety of duties past & present.

Veterans Some of the oldest motive power on the network including a Class 08 shunter and Class 56s.

Banbury Past & Present The 1990s are compared with recent months with Class 68s and Class 47s on contrasting traffic. A record of workings before and after the resignalling of the station in 2016.

The Midlands featuring Toton and the surrounding lines Toton in the 1990s and 2016 and the network on lines to Leicester and Burton on Trent.

In the post war years British Railways embarked on a major re-organisation of the freight network. A centrepiece was the building of a number of major marshalling yards which would centralise freight and lead to considerable improvements in efficiency and cost savings. In this programme we look at their history and development in the British Railways era using archive film.

Wath Yard with the Woodhead electrics in the 1950s and 1970s.

Toton Yard in the 1950s and 1960s with coal traffic along with film from the 1980s and 1990s showing traffic in and around the extensive site. The story is brought right up to date with film from the present day.

Wagonload Traffic and a brief history of the development of traditional wagon movements.

Carlisle Kingmoor from its opening in the 1960s, through the intervening years to the present day with a wide variety of traffic.

Temple Mills and a look at yard movements and motive power.

In the 1960s the North East of England was ideal for the steam enthusiast, from Pacifics on the East Coast Main Lines to branches winding their way into the Northumberland hills. here we explore this world of steam using archive film of the time.

• The Main Line; Pacifics on the line through Darlington with an A4, A1s and V2s together with freight and shunting duties.
• The Wansbeck Valley Line: A journey along the delightful branch to Scots Gap Junction and Woodburn. Freight is shown behind 0-6-0 J27s early in 1966.
