This is the third railway film by Ivo Peters, originally released in 1987 on VHS video. It has been remastered for DVD with some minor picture and sound editing to enhance this popular volume. The original material was 16mm film with sound effects recorded by Peter Handford and Jack Newton.

The first part of this volume covers the final years of steam over Shap, before the line was electrified and the M6 motorway was built. We see 9Fs, 8Fs, Black 5s, 2-6-4Ts, a Royal Scot, Britannias and others battling the gradients , taking water at speed on Dillicar Troughs, with passenger trains , parcels and freights all set against the incomparable fells, by Ivo's masterful camera work.

The second part covers a very special rail tour in Scotland over Easter 1963. All four of the preserved Scottish pre-grouping engines are seen working: the Caledonian Single in the snow, "Glen Douglas" around Queensferry, the Jones Goods and "Gordon Highlander" on the Stranraer Road.

In addition there are pre-grouping 0-6-0s in BR livery and a Black 5 in what Ivo calls his "desert island" film.

Please note: This is a DVD of Volume 3 of the original vhs series. There is no extra footage. The three previous "Ivo Peters" DVDs, "Ivo Peters Revisited Part 1", "Ivo Peters Revisited Part 2" and "Steam in 1960" are part of the "Ivo Peters - His Films Revisited" series. These are remastered versions of the original series with additional previously unseen footage. The first two are Ivo Peter's well loved survey of the late lamented Somerset & Dorset Railway. The third "Revisited" volume is the original volume 5 included in this series because it contains Somerset & Dorset footage.. This means that there will never be a volume 5 on DVD! These "Revisited" series DVDs can be recognised by their red covers).

This is the fourth railway film by Ivo Peters, originally released in 1988 on VHS video. In early 2019 it was remastered for DVD with some minor picture and sound editing to enhance this popular volume. The original material was 16mm film.

North Wales Narrow Gauge Steam in 1959/60 - This volume takes Ivo Peters' coverage of Britain's railways into a new realm - the fascinating narrow gauge railways of North Wales.

After a brief visit to BR's last narrow gauge, the Vale of Rheidol Railway at Aberystwyth, we see the early days of preservation of the Talyllyn and Ffestiniog plus a journey up the Snowdon Mountain Railway.

The major part of this volume covers the long closed and lost slate quarry railways at Padarn and Penrhyn and Dinorwic Quarry. Each railway is explored in detail including lineside trips up the lines as well as the slate quarries.

Ironstone Lines of the East Midlands - Ivo Peters' love of railways was widespread. Not only did he cover the famous main lines and well-know minor railways in his 16mm colour cine film collection, but he also delved into the realms of industrial steam where fascinating small and no-so-small engines performed the vital tasks of British industry.

Probably one of the least known areas was that of the Ironstone districts (such as Northamptonshire) where some of the most delightful and attractive industrial railways of the whole country ran along the edges of fields, through small woods and the heart of the countryside to the connecting lines with British Railways.

This is the first visit to the Iron Lines in the Ivo Peters Collection covering an area from Oxfordshire in the west to Lincolnshire in the east. They had a charm of their own, known only a to a few. Here we see a great variety from the narrow gauge at Kettering to the standard gauge at Wroxton (sometimes known simply as "O.I") which also boasted double track, signals and signal boxes.

    tanks.

  • The Bristol Pullman - a further "return match" this time in the cab! A very lively

journey with many steam engines to be seen, from Bath to Paddington.

  • Bowaters Sittingbourne - a pre-preservation visit to see how the paper manufacturers used their unique narrow gauge system, with dockside views and a great variety of engines.

  • Becton Gasworks - the East London Gasworks boasted two separate studs of locomotives - these were paraded for lvo's camera.

  • The last day of the MSW JR - the Midland and South Western Junction Railway linked Andoversford to Andover until September 10th 1961. On that last day lvo filmed S.L.S. and R.C.T.S. specials with Cookham Manor and a Mogul respectively. Scenes which are gone for ever are relived at Andoversford, Foss Cross, Marlborough, Grafton Junction, and South Cerney amongst others.

About IVO PETERS

Ivo Peters, who lived in Bath, always loved trains. He took his first photograph of a train in 1925 - appropriately on the Somerset & Dorset Railway, his "first love" right up to the line's sad end in March 1966.

lvo's collection of railway photographs grew steadily until, in 1959, an exciting thing happened. He was shown an excellent 16mm film of aircraft which so impressed him that, the very next day, he bought his first 16mm camera, together with a special tripod (a piece of equipment he always believed to be absolutely essential for steady cine shots) - and Ivo's railway filming had begun in earnest.

In the next 10 years he filmed railway scenes very extensively, covering as far as possible every type and size of steam locomotive. The Somerset & Dorset Railway, of course, figured prominently but he filmed many scenes throughout the British Isles - and not just on British Railways. Ivo had a great interest in industrial railways, particularly those which ran through the countryside such as ironstone and other quarry systems, and his collection of shots of the many different types of industrial steam locomotives is vast. The narrow gauge was also one of his great loves and he shot thousands of feet on all the small lines he could find. In particular, he recorded in detail the whole of the Isle of Man Railway - and also the diminutive Groudle Glen line near Douglas.

When Ivo finally stopped filming in 1974, his collection of 16mm film of steam locomotives was wide and varied and amounted to over 25,000 feet and all in colour, for he never took a single foot in black and white.

Steam in 1962. - This is the third volume in lvo Peters' "series within a series" of annuals. It follows on from the original Volume 5 "Steam in 1960" (now totally remastered and reissued as "His Films Revisited No.3: Steam in 1960") and Volume 7 "Steam in 1961". As usual it was filmed on 16mm colour cine-film.

1962 was the last year before Dr Beeching changed the face of British Railways forever, but it was a year of contrasts. It was also a particularly poignant year for Ivo as it saw the last "Pines Express" run on his favourite railway, the Somerset & Dorset. Naturally, the last Pines features in this volume, as do other S&D rail tours, a tour of industrial railways in the Midlands, events on the Western and Southern main lines and branches including the last Churchward Dock saddle tank, "Lord Nelson" at Swindon, complex workings around Yeovil Town, M7s on the Exmouth branch, Beattie Well tanks at Salisbury and - uniquely - a shopping trip by steam roller with the Rev.Teddy Boston!

Originally released in 1990, this volume has been totally remastered i.e. the pictorial material has now been prepared from the original 1" tape, transferred to digital betacam and then remastered. Some minor picture and sound editing has taken place to enhance this very popular volume in our series.

More detailed contents are as follows :

  • Nechells Electricity Generating Station - here we see a Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn's 0-6-0 tank and a small Peckett, at work in the heart of Birmingham.

  • Windsor Street Gasworks - also right in the heart of Birmingham, this gasworks boasted a complex industrial system.

  • Littleton Colliery - a variety of small tanks worked this large colliery, and we see them at the colliery itself, as well as working the branch from BR at Penkridge.

  • Coppice Colliery - situated in the Cannock Chase area of the N.C.B., this system boasted some very old locomotives.

  • Walsall Wood Colliery - a brief visit to see "Lord Kitchener" going on shed.

  • Cannock Wood Colliery - a system which included semaphore signalling as well as a passenger train for the workmen!

  • Grove Colliery - old wooden wagons feature here, as does Ivo's Bentley.

  • Stewarts & Lloyds, Bilston - this is a steel works in the northwest of Birmingham with First World War vintage locomotives.

  • Bass Worthington - the annual visit. The Bath Railway Society visited the Burton-onTrent system as in previous years to see progress.

  • The Shopping Trip - a little light relief; Teddy Boston used to take his housekeeper shopping on his Aveling & Porter steamroller! Ivo's film is a unique record of an extraordinary man.

  • Churchward Dock Tank - Great Western 0-6-0 ST No 1365 is seen watering at St Phillips Marsh shed at Bristol.

  • Bath and District - a rebuilt West Country on the Great Western main line and S&D 7F No 53808 on the S&D at Cole and at Masbury Summit. Also Great Western Hall No 4992 "Crosby Hall"at Bath Green Park.

  • Swindon Works - visits to the Great Western's works by No 30850 "Lord Nelson" and B1 Class No 61039 "Steinbok", as well as various Western locos on view, including No 6000 "King George V"

  • Coaley Junction - a contrast to 1961 with Ivatt Mogul No 46526 on the branch train.

  • Yeovil Town - Ivo's record of this Somerset town centre station, featuring the locomotive shed and M7 No 30129 as well as a Great Western pannier. Numerous views of both ends of the station layout.

  • East Devon - a rail tour with two M7s., No 30024 and No 30025, filmed at Sidmouth Junction, near Budleigh Salterton and at Lympstone.

  • Well Tank at Salisbury - on its way to Eastleigh for withdrawal, Beattie well tank No 30587 visited Salisbury shed and stood side by side with a 9F for Ivo's camera.

  • The Last Pines - No 92220 "Evening Star" (the last steam engine built by BR in 1960) with the last Pines Express on the Somerset & Dorset Railway, near Binegar and Cole Station.

Narrow Gauge Steam in the Early 60ss.:- In this volume, all filmed on 16mm high quality cine-film, Ivo Peters visits North Wales and the Isle of Man. The Vale of Rheidol was the first to be filmed, with No.9 sporting BR green livery. His 1961 and 1963 visits to the Tallyllyn Railway are seen next, with trains on the main line and locomotives being shunted at the then very basic Pendre Yard. The Welshpool & Llanfair follows with both "The Earl" and the "Countess". A brief visit to Tan-y-Bwlch on the Ffestiniog then rounds off our first section.

New railways were rare in the early 1960s so Ivo was attracted to the Bicton Woodland Railway in East Devon where he filmed a 1916 built Avonside tank.

The major part of this volume recalls Ivo's first visit to the Isle of Man in 1961. Here he filmed both the Groudle Glenn Railway and the Victorian charm of the main Isle of Man Railways, then still running (as they had done throughout the preceding 86 years) from Douglas to Port Erin, Peel and Ramsey. There are comprehensive views of the locomotive depot and station at Douglas together with film on each of the lines including the spectacular "race" out of St.Johns! Plus some fabulous views and memories of the now closed line along the west coast.

This volume was first released in 1991. In 2021 it was totally remastered i.e. the pictorial material has now been prepared from the original 1" master tape, transferred to digital betacam, remastered and then released on DVD. Some minor picture and sound editing has taken place to enhance yet another very popular volume in our series.

More detailed contents are as follows :

  • The Vale of Rheidol Railway - In the early 1960s the Vale of Rheidol was enjoying a resurgence under British Railways, and we see green-liveried 2-6-2T No.9 on shedat Aberystwyth and watering in the woods at the Aberffrwd loop.

  • The Talyllyn Railway - The railway is shown both in 1961 and 1963, when it had already been in preservation for a ecade. Highlights include a visit to the museum at Towyn, crossing of trains at Brynglas, locomotives on shed at Pendre, a double-header and No.4 with a Giesl ejector.

  • The Welshpool and Llanfair Railway - Featured for the first time in this series, the former Cambrian Railways' narrow gauge line is seen in 1961 and 1962 with both "The Earl" and "The Countess" in action. The highlight is the very last run out of the town centre at Welshpool to Raven Square.

  • The Ffestiniog Railway - A double Fairlie at Tan-y-Bwlch.

  • The Bicton Woodland Railway - Moving away from Wales, Ivo Peters recorded an unusual event - a new railway in 1963! This line, in East Devon, boasted a 1916 Avonside 0-4-0 tank, originally built for the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich. The railway is set in beautiful woodland scenery.

  • The Groudle Glen Railway - This little railway introduces us to the Isle of Man.Uniquely for the island, it is of 2'0" gauge, and, in 1961, its locomotive "Polar Bear" was not in the best of condition.

  • The Isle of Man Railways - This feature forms the larger part of this volume in the year when Ivo "discovered" the principal steam railways of the Isle of Man. We start with views of locomotives on shed at Douglas, capital of the island and headquarters of the railway. Features which are now long' gone, especially the signalling and platform canopies, are seen to advantage, and locomotives include Nos. 5 "Mona", 11 "Maitland", 12 "Hutchinson" 13 "Kissack", 14 "Thornhill", 15 "Caledonia" and 16 "Manuin", all of which, with the exception of No. 15, were 2-4-0T, built by Beyer Peacock of Manchester. No.15 was unique - the only 0-6-0T on the island, built by Dubs of Glasgow.

Trips up two of the Railway's principal routes follow, firstly on the Port Erin line as far as Castletown, including long double-headed and banked trains. A crossing takes place at Castletown itself.

The second route featured is that to Ramsey, alas now but a memory, so these shots form an important archive. "Caledonia" is seen outside Douglas shed, and then a double-header leaves the station. Union Mills was already closed, but at St.Johns are branch connections from Peel and there we view the celebrated "race" (featured on this jacket) - twice. We follow the scenic line to the north, with trains along the coastline, over viaducts and level crossings, before we end the day back at Douglas, with locomotives shunting empty stock and going on shed.

Private Railways 1961-1963 In this volume of his now legendary high quality film record of the railways of Great Britain in the 1960s, Ivo Peters turned his attention to a number of private railways which had either avoided nationalisation in 1948 or had been created after that monumental event.

The Bluebell Railway was the pioneer of the standard gauge railway preservation movement and it is fitting that we start with this railway. The line had been a part of British Railways and there had a been a closure attempt in 1956 to close the through route from East Grinstead to Lewes in Sussex. The section from Horsted Keynes to Sheffield Park was rescued by a group of enthusiasts in 1959 and in 1960 the first privately preserved railway passenger service were operated over the nearly 5 miles between these villages. Thus was born the great railway preservation movement of today and during this period of 1961-1963 it was amassing the locomotives which are now the envy of many of the railways to which it gave such a lead.

Here we feature the railway in 1962 and 1963, starting at the temporary halt near Horsted Keynes which was the first northern terminus. A parade of the earliest preserved locomotives is followed by the arrival of the first through train of the year, the Great Northern tank No.1247. This is seen on the main line at Three Bridges and the famous Ouse Viaduct as well as on the Bluebell. Later in the year LSWR T9 4-4-0 headed another through train and is seen at Brighton Shed as well as Haywards Heath. The following year saw the T9 again, together with the Caledonian Single no.123, and they are also seen at Brighton Shed. This film is a poignant reminder of those "Early Days".

Along with their delightfully varied shunters, a number of favourite industrial lines also appear in this volume:-

  • Bath Gas Works:- Ivo's home town had a gas works which boasted two industrial tanks engines, the 1929 built Avonside is featured here.

  • Port of Bristol:- At the mouth of the River Avon, Avonmouth, the Port of Bristol had an extensive system worked by the products of the local builders Avonside and Peckett. Here we feature the locomotive shed in 1963.

  • Wirksworth:- This was a private system built to serve the Middle Peak Stone Quarries, near the terminus of a Midland Railway branch. In this sequence we see another Peckett and a Black Hawthorn tank.

  • Buckminster Quarries:- This line in Leicestershire was used to transport ironstone to exchange sidings near Melton Mowbray. Ivo filmed a number of interesting locomotives here.

  • Exton Park:- This was one of the largest ironstone quarry systems, with a fleet of modern (post war) Yorkshire Engine Company saddle tanks. Ivo filmed them shunting and running along the 3 mile line to the exchange sidings with BR.

  • Cadeby Light Railway:- a true "private railway"! Ivo himself introduces his good friend the Reverend Teddy Boston and the railway he had built in the grounds of his home in the village of Cadeby in Leicestershire. Teddy had a Bagnall saddle tank which he drove at "exciting" speeds around his line!

  • Kettering Iron & Coal Company:- Ivo made two films about this delightful relic of the great days of the industrial steam era. The first of these formed part of our "Ironstone Lines Volume 6". This second film takes us back to the railway for a rather more detailed look. It owned some fascinating little 3ft gauge locomotives from Bagnall and Manning Wardle who were some of the most famous industrial locomotive manufacturers. We see examples of both types at work in the fields, at the sheds and loco works in 1962, the year that the railway closed.

Steam in 1963:- This is the fourth "annual" prepared by Ivo Peters and the first to be produced by his son Julian Peters. The familiar voice of Peter Woods, coupled with Ivo's superb camera work, makes for almost an hour's worth of pure nostalgia.

The first half opens with locomotive 45552 "Silver Jubilee" working the Home Counties Railway Society's "Mendip Rail Tour" followed by extensive coverage of visits to the Cheddar Valley line, the branch to Bulford and a number of now long-forgotten other branch lines including Winchester Chesil, Coaley Junction, Haying Island and Newton Tony.

Our second half features a number of visits by Gresley Pacifics to the West Country with A4 No.60022 "Mallard", A3 No.4472 "Flying Scotsman" and A3 No.60112 "St.Simon" all being seen on special trains.

A map showing the majority of the lines filmed is on the inside of the DVD cover.
