The Southern part of England was dominated by two great railway systems, the Great Western Railway and those lines which came together to form the Southern Railway. This programme examines the way these railways affected the lives of the people who used them and those who continue to use the same lines.

· Archive footage dating back to the 1930s.

· Featuring the Great Western Railway & Southern Railway.

· Narration by Ken Morgan.

· A one hour film.

The Great Western had a continuity of history that the other railways envied. We touch on the early days and the broad gauge as we set the scene using museum and reproduction locomotives and artifacts. Much of the GWR's continuity was underlined by its locomotive policy and we illustrate its growth with footage of the 1930s which shows many of the early locomotives still in use.

Other footage takes us into the 1950s and 1960s and on into the present day.

The Southern was built from three major systems. The earliest railway in the South, the Canterbury & Whitstable, is seen in the 1950s, but other parts of the story involve both black & white and full colour footage of the 1930s.

The steam era is taken to its close whilst the Southern Electric takes us right up to today. Archive film includes such items as 'Stars', 'Metro Tanks', the rebuilding of Leamington Spa Station, 'Paddleboxes' and the 'Southern Belle'.

Steam officially retired from daily use in England on 11th.August 1968, but thanks to the efforts of a dedicated band of enthusiasts who during the 1950s and 1960s set out to record this fascinating part of everyday life, it is still possible yo enjoy the sights and sounds of British steam at work.

This special production features a selection of the most interesting lines from all around the old British railways network including:

  • The Waverley Route:- passenger and freight trains on this scenic cross border route to Scotland that enjoyed its heyday in the 1950s.

  • The North East:- some of the last steam hauled coal trains around the Sunderland area.

  • The East Coast Main Line in the 1960s featuring Kings Cross and Knebworth.

  • Worcester to Paddington:- join the crew of a Castle Class 4-6-0 as they work an express paseenger train to London.

  • The South East:- atmospheric action in the late 1950s at Redhill.

  • Bournemouth:- spend time at this popular station in the late 1960s.

  • The Somerset & Dorset:- a chance to revisit (possibly) the most famous closed line of them all!

  • The North West:- splendid main line action through the beautiful Westmorland countryside, including banking over Shap Summit.

Roy Noble presents this documentary chronicling the history of Cardiff, one of Europe's leading maritime cities. Archive newsreel footage and rare colour amateur film combine to show how the city has developed over the years, with busy scenes of streetlife from the ages of horse drawn carts, electric trams and steam trains, plus of course the bustling docks. Also examined is how the city fared through two world wars, and the tragedy of Aberfan. Leading public figures featured include Prime Ministers David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill, and there is also footage of the city honouring several generations of royalty, from King George V to Prince William.

Presented by Scottish television's Angus Simpson, Glasgow Through the Ages takes us on a journey through one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in Europe.

From its pre-eminent position as the British Empire's second city and as the self-proclaimed 'workshop of the world', the story of Glasgow has been one of dramatic peaks and troughs.

In the 19th century the city fathers constructed a stunning legacy of grand buildings and bold statements around this already ancient city. They managed this because of the vast wealth generated from the heavy industries along the Clyde. Buildings such as the university and the city chambers reflected a city full of riches with an optimistic future.

It was the 20th century that brought the real drama and challenge for Glasgow and its resilient population. As the British empire contracted, so Glasgow fell on hard times, becoming the 'no mean city' of popular legend where slums such as the Gorbals became a by-word for urban deprivation and whose rebellious workforce on 'Red Clydeside' fought the disintegration of the traditional industries, bringing the city to the edge of chaos in the process.

Astonishingly the city reinvented itself once more. After some hard years Glasgow rediscovered some of its old talents in design and architecture, business and tourism. Charles Rennie Mackintosh's architectural genius was recognised at last and Alexander Thomson's great churches were saved and a new generation of artists like Pete Howson came to the fore, while the past was enshrined in the modern building of the Burrell collection.

'Glasgow's miles better' was the campaign and when, in 1990, the city was made European city of culture, the rest of the world was made to believe it.

The one constant in the life of the city for the past 100 years has been the sporting battle between the 'old firm' of Celtic and Rangers and the passion burns as brightly as it always has done.

Glasgow Through the Ages covers British sport's most enduring and intense rivalry from the beginning of the century to the present day.

This programme brings you the life and times of an extraordinary city through unique insights into people and the places that have seen it survive and endure to eventually thrive and reclaim its place as the second city of Britain.
