Decín is an industrial town of 50,000 with stations on both banks of the river. The left bank sees EuroCity trains between Dresden and Prague while the east bank carries the majority of freight trains. The two lines continue south to the largest city in the north of the Czech Republic. Ústí nad Labem has a population of 100,000, a riverside port, large chemical and food processing industries, and a major centre for the activities of CD Cargo at a yard west of the city. It is also an important junction as the line west to Karlovy Vary and onward to Cheb diverges. The complex of lines crosses the river on a long low bridge that can be observed from the cable car station. South of the city the Elbe runs in a gorge with a railway on both banks. From Strekov Castle you can follow the trains south or north towards the city. The traffic is very diverse- a mix of both diesel and electric traction. We continue south to the pretty little town of Litomerice and the highly industrial town of Lovosice. Roudnice nad Labem is an historic town on the left bank, while Melník on the other bank is dominated by grain silos. Všetaty is a tiny town but a gateway for the rural lines to the east. The film concludes on the outskirts of Prague- capital and largest city in the Republic.

We travel over lines 130 and 140 from the important city and junction of Ústí nad Labem to Karlovy Vary , then onward to the border station with Germany at Cheb. Ústí nad Labem is a city of nearly 100,000 on the Elbe (Labe in Czech). The north south railway through the city is a very important connection between Italy and Austria, eastern and northern Germany and onwards to Scandinavia. The main east to west transit route runs south of us from Prague to Cheb through Plzen – Czech Transit Corridor 3 known domestically as routes 170 / 171. A transit route it may be but west of Plzen the remainder of the route to Cheb (line 170) is largely single track. The line from Ústí nad Labem to Cheb is, on the other hand, double track or better throughout. It passes through the south Bohemia coalfields, is busy with coal traffic and traffic from the industries spawned by coal, such as refining and metal processing. Heading west we visit: Teplice, Retenice (really just a suburb of Teplice itself with a large housing estate and a glassworks). Bílina, where the whole town was demolished to make way for a lignite mine, Most, Chomutov, Klášterec nad Ohrí, Karlovy Vary- the second most visited tourist destination in the country, before arriving at Cheb where we are joined by the international transit route from Austria and Slovakia. This is the border station with Germany -a great place to watch trains as they are classified before their journey west.

Snälltåget Cabride+ Alvesta to Linköping

We are guests of Snälltåget the new brand for mainline passenger trains in Sweden operated by Veolia. Our train is the 09.20 from Malmo Central station (Malmö C) due into Stockholm at 14.31. The train of classic Swedish IC cars is hauled by a modern TAURUS locomotive belonging to open access operator HectorRail.

This section Alvesta – Linköping takes us across the highest point of the mainline to Stockholm. 300m asl. Benign in summer- snow is common from December to early April. The central section is quite bleak with few population centres. Over the top of the high plain we descend to Mjölby where the line to the north via the huge classification yard at Hallsberg diverges. From there it’s a short run to the industrial town of Linköping home of the aviation division of SAAB.

This section, Linköping to Stockholm takes us through the industrial towns of Norrköping and Södertälje (port, container terminal, VW distribution centre) and onto the capital. The approach to Stockholm C is heavily compromised with work on the Stockholm City Tunnel but despite this, and letting an MTR FLIRT from Gothenburg pass us, we make an on-time arrival.

Antwerp: The Liefkenshoek rail link – a Passage for Europe.

The statistics for the port of Antwerp are impressive: 38 ocean going vessels call at the port each day. These ships are serviced by 132 barges, 250 trains and literally thousands of trucks. The port’s hinterland extends deep into the continent- Sweden in the north to Italy and Greece in the south. The port now encompasses over 7,000 square km on the right bank of the river Schelde, and 5,000 of new construction of the left. Rail infrastructure has grown with the port – Antwerp Noord yard is the second largest in Europe. The rapidly growing left bank had been difficult to access by rail until 2015 when the largest rail infrastructure project since the completion of the high-speed network was put into service. The new line – the Liefkenshoek rail link – is a 16km double track electrified railway linking the new complexes west of the river with Noord classification yard. This, together with new freight yards and links to the mainlines has substantially cut wagon handling time, and helped B-Logistics launch new services to its hinterland. We look at the new link, the yards and the routes away from the port.
