This is a collection of archive film showing Birmingham trams & buses. The footage shows trams in action in the 1930s and in their final form in the post-war era. Historic film of Tennent St.Bus Garage; an early closure is included, and also views of the post-war bus fleet including Midland Red at work on various routes including Rednal, Aston and West Bromwich in the 1950s.

Edinburgh occupies a unique place in the history of British tramways. Horse cars were operated from 1871 - 1907, cable trams (the fifth largest system in the world) from 1888 - 1923, but electric trams did not arrive until 1922 except for a line in Musselburgh (1904), Leith, then an independent burgh (1905), and a short line to Slateford (1910). Extensions were built until 1937 and new trams emerged from Shrubhill works until 1950. The first service was replaced by buses in 1950, with the last trams operating on 16th November, 1956.

Here we have an evocative selection of films (much in colour), depicting the Edinburgh trams. Most types seen in action - ex-cable, Wood Standards, 'Pickerings', experimentals including 'Red Biddy', Shrubhill Standards, and 'Manchesters'. Excellent sequences capture cars at key locations - Tollcross, West End, Princess Street, The Mound, The Bridges, Leith Street and Leith Walk. Detailed route coverage begins in 1954 with scenes on Seafield Road, along the main trunk route to Corstorphine with trams at the West End, Haymarket, the Zoo and in splendid isolation at The Maybury.

At Levenhall, trams are seen on the single track section including 'tattie' loop, at the busy King's Road junction, and loading at Waterloo Place. 1955 concentrates upon the heavily used Colinton route with its two stretches of single track and tightly-angled S-bends. In 1956, the final year of operation, the dapper madder and white trams tackle many steep grades including Liberton, Fairmilehead, Hanover Street and The Mound. They pass smartly through the salubrious south-side suburbs of Churchill, Marchmont and Morningside, whilst in the north, they weave through the docks and port of Leith, pass shunting steam locomotives, enter the quaint fishing village of Newhaven and along the narrow coast road to Granton. Many aspects of the former Leith system are fully documented - the superb ornate poles, Bernard Street swing bridge and Trinity tram pinch. Coverage concludes with views, especially in the Old Town, of the last two routes - the 23 and 28.

Special features:- Trams and rugby crowds at Murrayfield in 1936 and 1954; Interior scenes at Shrubhill and Tollcross; Edinburgh's famous parcels service; A spectacular re-wiring; A works tram in action; Last week activity including the decorated car 172, final night scenes and the one that got away

Originally filmed on 8mm, 9.5mm and 16mm film.

The first part of this video features the original 1896 Glasgow Subway in the 1950s and 1970s. By the time the Subway closed for modernisation in 1977 it was a vertable working museum with its distinctive musty smell, creaking and twisting 3896 cars built for cable operation, and difficult to find stations. The atmosphere of the last days is well covered, including sound, with car interiors, cab rides, the Broornloan car sheds, car 41 in 1896 livery and the unique car 32. Trailer cars which retained latfice gates up until closure are also featured. Operation of the travelling crane used to lower cars from workshops into the tunnels is not forgotten. With film kindly lent by Strathclyde Passenger Transport Executive the rebuilding programme is shown. Tunnels are opened up, stations dug out and amongst the thousands of tons of cement arriving is seen the strange sight of St.Enoch Station high up in the air supported by a concrete raft.

While this was going on, Glasgow's other underground lines were being restored. The Argyle line is seen in steam days.

The modernised underground, nicknamed the "Clockwork Orange", which opened to the public on 16 April 1980, is covered in the second half. Day-to-day operation is shown, including the control centre, depot workings and cab rides. The new workshops at Govan are covered including cars going through the washer. To bring the story right up to date, the first of the new trailer cars is seen undergoing acceptance tests.

Liverpool Trams (80-mins)

Liverpool Trams (80-mins)

Ref: OV473D

Price:£18.95

Quantity:

Liverpool's trams were amongst the finest in the country, Over 300 new cars were built between 1933 and 1942 at the Corporation's works in Edge Lane. In the suburbs, high speed grass-tracks separated the trams from other traffic. In the city most routes terminated at the Pier Head on three large turning circles overlooked by the Liver Building. After the war, the trams fell from grace and were swept away in favour of buses, the last car leaving the Pier lead on 14 September 1957.

Here we recapture the days when Liverpool still boasted a magnificent fleet of 'Green Goddesses', the local name for the city's more modem trams.

The story begins in the heyday with views of Bellamys, Mallins Balconies and Priestly standards. Cars are seen in the days after the Blitz and the drab post-war years of 1949/1950.

Then there are a few rare colour scenes of trams in 1947 and 1949. The much-loved English Electric bogie cars of 1931 are seen in 1953 and one of the class No.766 is photographed in colour on an enthusiasts' special in 1954.

Views of trams at Seaforth, Allerton, Garston and along Muirhead Avenue are followed by more detailed coverage of the routes abandoned between 1955 and 1957 with much of this section being in colour.

As special features we include rare footage of trams "over the water" in Birkenhead and Walllasey, a famous runaway, a snowplough on an unusual mission, bogie trams being hauled for scrap by a diesel loco, The Last Tram Procession, and car 293 emigrating to America.

The story concludes with Green Goddesses running in Glasgow and the last journey of 869 under its own power, the only Liverpool streamliner to be preserved on 8th.June 1960.

London's Lost Transport (60-mins)

London's Lost Transport (60-mins)

Ref: OV976D

Price:£15.95

Quantity:

This is a casual look at some of the buses, trams, trains, boats and London's aerodromes that have served the City well. It is also a study of Londoners as seen at work and play and during the Second World War.

Edwardian horse buses feature first at Trafalgar Square. Also a working site of the many Tube railways springing up all over the City. Superb scenes of horse buses and Hansom Cabs in Parliament Square. Piccadilly Circus has early motor cars and the first motor buses appear. Underground railways didn't attract the pioneer film makers do we have some excellent drawings by W.Lucker Jnr adding to film of the Metropolitan extensions into the country.

When Tower Bridge opens up the quaint signalling system is seen in action as a ship approaches. Nearby a paddle steamer departs to Southend where Edwardian Ladies wet their ankles in the sea. The LCC holds a cermony in 1903 to welcome their first electric tram route. In 1908 the Franco-British exhibiion is held at White City, and a fashion show reveals what the ladies are now wearing. Remarkable scenes follow in East London, early trams and buses in Whitechapel, East Ham and Stepney. Trams in Barnet follow. The LUT scrap old trams and introduce the famous "Feltham" advanced luxury tramcar.

On the Underground, Standard stock is seen being built and variations are seen running in West London. The Metropolitan are running T stock trains and electric locos. London's first electric trolleybus, the "Diddler" is seen at Kingston, dodging around the trams there.

In 1933 all transport concerns, except the main railway companies, came to be run as one organisation, the "London Passenger Transport Board". This inherited a vast collection of old and new buses, trams, trains etc. We take a look at some of these - the General buses, LCC Trams and tube trains. Trams still trundled throuh Kingston Subway and emerged under the foundations of Waterloo Bridge being rebuilt above them. Rare colour film of 1934 shows General buses, Green Line coaches and the many fine cars and taxis of the period.

A tour of London Docks in 1935 reminds us of the days of sailing wherries, steam tugs, floating cranes and ships of many nations. Fish was still delivered by boats to Billingsgate Market. London street works repair roads, chairs, sell flowers and turn Barrel Organs. While posh children went to the Park with their nannies.

Cinema Posters are pasted up and we go to Leytonstone High Road where - in colour, in 1936 - trams and buses pass the Academy Cinema.

Londons get off Standard stock tube trains at Hendon Central and head for Hendon Aerodrome to see an Air Pageant take place, or board a Southern Electric train for London Airport then at Croydon. Imperial Airways fly those magnificent machines - huge biplane airliners.

The LPTB started it 1935 New Works plan amongst which LNER steam worked branches would be taken over by tube trains such as the Ongar line. Standard stock trains are seen in colour and new 1938 tube trains were put into service.

The Second World War sees Londoners sheltering in tube stations once again. Air raids took their toll of the buses and trams, and the end of the war was wecomed - in colour film - of crowds in Piccadilly and Trafalgar Square in 1945.

The tram replacement programme was resumed. Trams terminate at Victoria Station for the last time and buses take over, but many remain in service in South London. The RT bus was put into full production after the pre-war versions are seen.

In 1951 London had the "Festival of Britain" exhibition on the South Bank Many special buses were put on to cope with the crowds. In Battersea Park, Emmetts wonderful "Far Tottering and Oyster Creek" railway is seen in service. Old buses still lumbered on and the Board was forced to hire in many provincial buses to cope. They are seen going past many bombed sites still littering the City. St.Paul's Cathedral was still surrounded by ruined buildings.

STL buses were still being used on the famous "Skid Patch" at Chiswick Works. Colour films of the last days of the London tram comes next and their sad demise by being burnt to scrap is filmed at Penhall Road yad in 1952.

1956 sees the new aluminium bodied tube stock being launched at Acton station. Also a Acton, the little shuttle to South Acton stops runing. Standard stock tube trains are seen running to Leytonstone, in the resumption of the pre-war plan. A prototype Routemaster appears on show. The production models would be used to replace the trolleybuses. Scenes then follow showing the Trolleys still in service in North London, the scrapping programme starting behind Colindale Depot and finally - in colour - magnificent shots on a snowy day of Trolleybuses at Barnet Church in 1962.

Sheffield was the last city in England to operate trams. Renowed for its cheap fares. frequent services, high maintenance standards and steeply graded routes, the system continued to expand until 1935. Over 300 new four-wheel double-deckers were built between 1928 and 1952 including the famous "Roberts" cars. Ironically as the last of these was being delivered the city implemented its policy of tramway abandonment, the final route closing on 8th.October 1960. Thirt years later modern tramways returned to the streets of Sheffield!

This video recaptures the glory days with an evocative selection of films, many in colour, depicting all types of cars before, during & after the war. Detailed route coverage starts with ECCLESALL-MIDDLEWOOD (abandones 1954), then the 'hilly' lines WALKLEY-INTAKE (1956) and CROOKES-HANDSWORTH (1957); the reserved track along PRINCE OF WALES ROAD (1958), the industrial canyons of BRIGHTSIDE (1958/9), the semi-rural ABBEY LANE (1959), the single track sections en-route to WADSLEY BRIDGE (1959) and finally the town trunk routes MEADOWHEAD-SHEFFIELD LANE TOP and BEAUCHIEF-VULCAN ROAD (1960).

SPECIAL FEATURES - football cars for Wednesday and United; snow scenes; a simulated gas attack; the short-lived unpopular green livery; a second-hand London tram; an ex-Bradford car; enthusiast specials; period buses & cars; and FINAL DAY ACTIVITY. In conclusion, the trams that "escaped" and the horse car that returned.

Seaton Tramway

Seaton Tramway

Ref: OV950D

Price:£15.95

Quantity:

The Seaton Tramway must be one of the most unusual tram lines in the country. It keeps moving! The story starts in an electrical factory in Barnet, North London, where a Mr. Claude Lane was making electric vehicles, like milk floats.

He built a very large model tram there and soon took it around to fairs and amusement parks. With a second tram he took them and the track etc. to Rhyl in North Wales and to Hastings during summer seasons. They proved to be very popular and a permanent tramway was set up at Eastbourne, Sussex, This opened in 1954 and extended in 1955-8.

Most of the tramcars now in use were built there. The next move was to its present home - at Seaton. The Seaton branch railway line was to close and it would make a very attractive Tramway with its views across the River Axe - the natural history background -and leading to two lovely villages at Colyford and Colyton.

There the Tramway has operated for over 20 years. This video recording starts with scenes at Hastings then moves onto the Eastbourne times.

Through films provided by Ken Thorpe the story of the construction and developments of the tramway is told, the track building - bridge repairing - and all the other slogging jobs that volunteers and staff had to perform. Their reward was when the first Battery powered runs took place. Later the overhead wires went up and an extension to Colyton opened.
