Opening Scene: Mallard at Greenfields on the climb to Diggle.

The End of the News: Newspaper traffic ceased on 10 July 1988. During the last week we see a 50 at Dawlish, a 31 giving way to an 85 at Preston, a DPU at Blackpool, a van train at Lancaster and a 73 at London Bridge.

Cab Ride – Aberdeen to Inverness:
The Great North of Scotland and Highland Railways’ main line viewed from the cab of 47515 on the 09.05. See what the driver sees!

Archive Film: The ‘Scottish Tour 1960’ was filmed by Cam Camwell, covering the same area as our Cab Ride, but twenty-eight years earlier! Gordon Highlander is seen at home in the GNSR line to Macduff and on the main line at Invararie and an immaculate 2P takes the train on. A Black 5 takes the Dava line at Forres and we end at Inverness with the ‘Jones Goods’ (all in colour).

Salisbury Steam: Gerald Daniels has acquired a name for innovation and this year’s “Blackmore Vale Express” programme included an 8F on main line goods. Andover to Romsey trains and an exciting ride in an Inspection Saloon as City of Wells ran alongside on a parallel track! Detailed coverage of what may be the last ‘Southern Steam’ ever!

Drummond Over the Alps: The Mid-Hants Railway was the temporary home of the NRM’s non-working M7 No. 245 in the summer of 1988 and ran it ahead of T9 No. 120 on a unique ride over the line “double headed”. This is the full story of a never to be repeated day.

The Foxfield Railway: One of the lesser-known preserved railways, the Foxfield Railway celebrated 21 years of preservation in 1988, featuring industrial tanks on fierce gradients. This is one of the most fascinating lines there is!

Sentinel at Middleton: Repainted into BR Departmental livery on the 1950’s, No.54 captures the real flavour of those years as she takes a good train along the Middleton Railway in the heart of industrial Leeds.

Rails at Westoe: 1980’s industrial working at and around Westoe Colliery on South Tyneside featuring the unique NCB electric shunters on the quayside.

Freight in South Wales: The first part of a review on BR freight workings in the heartland of Wales, around Newport and district, featuring 37’s in Railfreight liveries, a 08 shunting at Newport Docks, East Usk Yard, etc.

Opening Scene: 34092 on the Settle & Carlisle on her last northbound run.

Dalwhinnie Daze: A ‘spotlight’ feature on this remote Scottish Highland station that exercises a strange fascination, as it seems lost in time but for the variety of modern traction from HSTs to 47s, 37s and 26s.

Cab Ride – Carlisle to Glasgow: This long-awaited cab ride was recorded on 8 November 1988 aboard 86250 on the Caledonian Main Line over Beattock.

Diesel Galas: The modern traction enthusiasts have been well served recently by the preserved railways. We cover Galas on the Severn Valley, Worth Valley and East Lancs.

The Real End of BR Steam: The Vale of Rheidol celebrated a sad event on Bonfire Night – its last special day under BR control. Naturally we covered this with shed and lineside scenes of Numbers 7 and 8 in action.

DMU/Bus Replacements
– On Hire to British Railways: Re-opening of the Glanrhyd Bridge on the Heart of Wales line including DMU in the river, terminating trains and the re-opened bridge. Also track-lifting on the S&C between Garsdale and Horton-in-Ribblesdale.

Archive: More steam archive from the Cam Camwell Collection.

Black 5s Today: One of the most numerous steam classes has become one of the most numerous in preservation. We see eight examples: 5000 on the Severn Valley, 5231 on the Great Central, 45428 and 44767 on the North Yorkshire Moors plus 5305, 5407, 44871 and 44932 on the Main Line.

Clapham and Waterloo:
By contrast to the above, this is a feature on the signal boxes at the busiest junction in the world and one of its feeder termini. Plenty of action here!

Bluebell Hayling: The Bluebell Railway’s tribute to the Hayling Island Branch which closed 25 years ago.

Footplateman of the Year
: Our first visit to the Dean Forest Railway was to see how various crews from around the country responded to the challenge to find the ‘Footplateman of the Year’.

News:
As always a round-up of all that’s interesting, from new freight turns to new liveries, the green Peak, Railtours, Open Days, Winchfield 150, more ‘last’ Salisbury steam. Clun to Marylebone, 48151 on the S&C, plus much more.

Ref: KFRSMAG18D

Price:£14.95

Opening Scene: 47519 heads newly-named Avocet (89001) out of Leeds with the wires switched off.

Provincial Problems: The mass withdrawal of Class 155 Sprinters with door troubles saw rapid redeployment of 37s, 47s, 31s, DMUs, 150s, 156s and Pacers throughout the county. The feature shows the effects!

Cab Ride – Liverpool Street to King’s Lynn: Network Anglia’s main line to Cambridge is electrified and the continuation to the town on the Wash will soon be dealt with. Our cab ride, recorded on 8 March 1989 takes us from the suburban sprawl of East London through Essex to the Fens, with plenty of semaphones at Ely.

Winter Workings – Part One: Pre-Christmas trains at Bo’ness, Leighton Buzzard, Loughborough (52XX and 49XX), Butterley (48151), Ingrow (Standard Class 4 and 61XX), Paignton and Churston (4555) and Rolvendon Road.

Winter Workings – Part Two: After Christmas at Bitton, in South Wales at Blaenavan, in the Midlands at Chasewater, with ‘Asbestos’ and a first (and maybe last) visit to Dinting to see ‘Scots Guardsman’ and ‘Bahamas’, back at last.

Archive Film – North Wales: With steam returning to the North Wales Coast Line in 1989, we look back to 1963 to see Black 5s, Fairburn tanks, BR Standards and so on at Llandudno Junction and Prestatyn, Bangor and Colwyn Bay.

Preservation – The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (Part One): A return visit to our first-ever featured railway, to see progress on this magnificent line through a national park, with the standard tank, Black 5s, J72, the Lambton tank and 56xx, as well as the Class 24 diesel, working from Grosmont up to the summit at Fylingdales.

Swanage Progress: Another expanding railway, the Swanage Railway on the Isle of Purbeck is rapidly returning across the heathland to Harmans Cross, Corfe Castle and Furzebrook. 1F and 3F tanks are seen separately and double heading, on the Harmans Cross opening day. We also visit Swindon Works to see progress on the line’s Standard tank, 34072 and 30053, and the M7 which returned from the USA.

The Channel Tunnel: Now progressing rapidly, this feature shows ‘Bodmin’ at the Isle of Grain terminal, work in progress at Shakespeare Cliff, the model of the British terminal at Folkestone and its associated Exhibition, but mainly concentrates on the action – the traffic generated in Kent by Channel Tunnel requirements, with Classes 33 and 56 on heavy freights.

A Bridge Too Far: The bridge connecting the Far North lines to Inverness was washed away in February 1989, marooning 37s and coaches on ‘the other side’. With Sprinters due to be ‘bussed in’, we view Dingwall, the new terminus and the remains of the bridge itself, also a washout near Rannock.

News: Busy times on the ECML with 89001, 91s and an 86. S&C diversions and Warcop branch closure, 31412 in ‘Engineer’s Drab’. An A4 to Bridgenorth, the K1 on the ‘Sub’ and the ECML at Newcastle, 4771s test run and S&C journey. 48151 on the S&C and Clan Line also on the S&C and testing on the North Wales Coast Main Line. A Railfreight 20 at Stoke and new underground units, a DVT and a ‘Bubblecar’ at Culgaith are amongst our features!

Introduction: No. 3 ‘Sir Haydn’ leaves Nant Gwernol on the Tal-y-llyn.

Steam on the Met: We were invited by LUL to film Met No.1 Pannier 9466 and Standard Tank 80080 at work on the Metropolitan main line during July 1990. This is a major feature which includes the engines on shed at Ruislip and Neasden, as well as at work on the main line, changing engines at Amersham, special staff workings, including No.1 on the Stanmore branch, unique footage of No.1 at Baker Street on the Circle Line and Upminster Open Day with no.1 on the shuttle.

Cab Ride – Salisbury to Waterloo: Last of the principal main lines into London. Unlikely to be electrified now, the Salisbury line will ‘make do’ with 50s until Networker Turbos take over in 1992. We rode aboard 50023 ‘Howe’ to the Southern’s future Channel Tunnel terminal in July 1990.

Gloucester Rail Day:
One of the most ambitious railtour programmes yet shows an immense variety of workings to Gloucester for its ‘Rail Day’. This feature concentrates on the railtours rather than the exhibition, including fascinating ‘double-enders’ ( two 37s at each end of a train!) and rare motive power and branches (including Sharpness).

Preservation News Focus: Action on the Bluebell, Swanage, Cholsey and Wallingford, Yorkshire Dales, West Somerset, GWR, Bo’ness and Strathspey as they gear up for the Summer!

The Middleton Railway: This, the first standard gauge preserved railway, is the subject of our profile in ARPS 30, with its fascinating collection of vintage locomotives and stock, including the unique visit of the first privately-preserved standard gauge locomotive, GNR 0-6-0ST No.1247 and archive film of the railway.

BR Newslines: Tamworth Castle and 47407 at Garsdale, Red 47533 and 86419, the ‘Butterfly Train’ on Tyneside, Grangetown branch, Killer 20s again, 37 to Weymouth, Haymarket at Oxford, DBSO in Anglia, backward 91, 307s and 322s Yorkshire, 320 in Glasgow, 156 to Edinburgh and three 37s together!

60s In Action: Railfreight’s newest main line diesels are still rather difficult to find at work, but we have been out and about to record them and to see the latest deliveries from – and to – Brush at Loughborough. We also visit Procor at Wakefield to see the bodies being built!

Railfreight Customers 1 -Tioxide UK: We visit Immingham Dock in foul weather to see ilmenite (a black sticky substance) being unloaded – and blown everywhere – for rail transhipment on the once-a-month Class 9 unfitted along the Grimsby and Immingham Tramway, behind a class 37, to the premises of paint manufacturers Tioxide UK. Also seen are industrial diesels and a 47.

The Talyllyn Railway (Part Two): Celebrating the 40th Anniversary Year of this pioneer line, this part takes up up the railway in the Summer of 1990.
