Every March up to a quarter of a million horse race-goers descend on Cheltenham to attend the ‘Cheltenham Festival’ with almost a week of horse racing culminating in the famous ‘Gold Cup’ race.

A large number of these race-goers arrive by train at Cheltenham Spa railway station and make the three-mile journey to the racecourse by bus. The ‘Racecourse Shuttle Service’ is operated by Stagecoach West and is organised and planed to perfection by a dedicated team such that it runs like clockwork. A total of 65 double-deckers are loaned from other Stagecoach fleets from around the country in addition to some local Stagecoach West vehicles that are used alongside them. The buses range from older Transbus Trident ALX400 double-deckers to ADL and Scania Enviro400s and the very latest ADL and Scania Enviro400 MMC buses.

The additional buses were provided by the Stagecoach fleets of Cumbria & North Lancashire, East, East Midlands, London, Manchester, Midlands, North East, Oxford, South, South East, South West, Wales and Yorkshire. Most vehicles are in Stagecoach corporate livery, but variations are seen; green buses from the Cambridge Busway and Stagecoach South’s ‘Southdowns’ livery, red buses from London, a two-tone red with white Scania/Enviro400MMC from the South West fleet as well as Stagecoach Gold branded buses.

In early March 2020 our cameras were on hand to record the event for you to enjoy. Filmed over two days we follow the buses and the race-goers from arrival at Cheltenham Spa railway station to the racecourse via the town centre and back via the town centre to the railway station at the end of the last day. This volume is divided into eight sections, beginning at Cheltenham Spa where we see the buses loading from the trains to begin their journey.

We then film in the town centre, where we also catch up with the local service buses running their normal duties. Most Stagecoach West double–deckers in Cheltenham are in the striking Stagecoach Gold livery and are seen alongside brand new Enviro200MMC single-deckers that have just received names nominated from an on-line vote organised by Stagecoach. Local independent operators are also filmed with Pulhams showing off their brand new ‘20-registration’ Optare Solo SR single-deckers and Marchants vehicles are also seen.

Town centre locations include St Georges Road, Royal Well Road, Promenade, Pittville Street and Portland Street to name but a few. We then film the ‘Shuttle Service’ buses, as well as the local buses, on the spring-like Evesham Road heading to and from the racecourse. On arrival at the racecourse we see, some amazing shots as the fleets of double-deckers disgorge their passengers.

Whilst the racing is on we take a look at the regular operations in the town centre before returning to the racecourse to see the mass departure of the buses at the end of the day’s racing, leaving the racecourse along New Barn Lane and Albert Road. Our cameras also film the buses running through the town centre and along the normally pedestrianised section of the Promenade with special dispensation.

The final section on this programme is at Cheltenham Spa station where we see the buses arriving full of happy – and maybe not so happy punters heading off home by train. We hope you enjoy your trip to the races albeit without horses!

Bournemouth Buses

Bournemouth Buses

Ref: IT1038D

Price:£16.99

Quantity:

The seaside resort of Bournemouth on England’s south coast has always held an interest for the bus enthusiast. Even today the local bus company owned by Bournemouth Borough Council branded as ‘YELLOW BUSES’ offers the follower an interesting mix of vehicles, from 25 year old Alexander bodied Leyland Fleetlines to the very latest Volvo B7TL bodied by Wrightbus in their Ballymena factory in Northern Ireland. Single deckers are represented by Dennis Lance and Darts with three variations of East Lancs bodywork.

This video filmed mostly during the hot summer of 2003 shows all types going about their daily duties. We start early in the morning at Mallard Road depot seeing the vehicles leaving to start work. Our cameras then take up various locations around Bournemouth central area and some of the suburbs. 2003 could be the last season for the convertible Leyland Fleetlines, so we follow the remaining examples in service on route 12 along the East Cliff, Boscombe, Hengistbury Head and also at the other end of the route at Sandbanks. Our cameras also ride on the route, so you can relive the joys of riding an open-top bus at a traditional seaside resort! The Fleetlines contrast nicely with the new convertible East Lancs Volvo B7TLs!

Nostalgia is provided by the cine camera of Richard Newman as we get a superb reminder of the days of the Bournemouth Trolleybus. We then have a brief look back at 1999 recalling some of the vehicles that have recently left the fleet. The video finishes with a Photo Gallery from 1993 and 1995.

If you are looking to see a smart fleet with variety set in a most picturesque part of England, then this is the video for you!

Bristol VR on Home Ground

Bristol VR on Home Ground

Ref: IT1020D

Price:£17.95

Quantity:

The Bristol VR on home ground may no longer mean a City Line example battling for supremacy on congested city streets, instead the VR can be found feeling the wind rushing through its vents as it serves rural communities in northern Somerset.

Between the fields and hedgerows, past dry stone walls and picturesque cottages, along narrow lanes and up steep Mendip hills, VRs that run on once-a-week services 683 and 791 by Abus of Bristol take them through this lush scenery, to Wells and Weston-super-Mare. Names like Blagdon, Priddy, West Harptree and Temple Cloud are among the points served. Additionally, the VRs tackle the narrow streets in the former mining communities of Radstock and Paulton.

Both the 683 and 791 have the same regular driver - well-known “Bristol” fanatic Allan Macfarlane, who is keen to share this marvellous countryside with you, through this video.

Not to overlook the urban days of the VR, we include some of Allan’s footage taken not that long ago within Bristol, Bath and Weston, of City Line and Badgerline buses, together with some from the many small operators who chose the VR, not just for schools work, but on competing services.

We also include a ‘Photo Gallery’ of Bristol Omnibus VR’s taken during their heyday in the 1970’s and ‘80’s.

We would like to thank Alan Peters of Abus for his help during the filming of this video.

Buses in Devon 2019

Buses in Devon 2019

Ref: IT1370D

Price:£16.99

Quantity:

In the non-too distant past mention buses in Devon to a bus enthusiast and thoughts of the red and ivory buses of Devon General will come to mind. In fact Devon General celebrated what would have been it’s centenary, if it was still operating, in 2019. A superb celebratory event was organised and is covered in the volume ‘Devon General 100’.

In 2019 the contemporary bus scene is dominated by Stagecoach South West, with modern buses wearing the corporate livery, but with a number of exceptions. In the Torbay area, for example we see new ADL Enviro400MMC double-deckers painted in a smart two-tone red and white livery laid out in corporate style for the ‘hop12’ group of routes. There is a green version of the livery – ‘hop22’, as well as a purple one – ‘hop2’. Open-top buses feature a two-tone yellow and white livery (‘hop122’) with buses in the Torbay area featuring ‘cartoon’ characters - with younger travellers encouraged to spot these buses – these are converted Dennis Tridents with Alexander ALX400 bodies.

We begin this review of buses in Devon with a visit to Exeter in June 2019. We see plenty of action in locations such as the High Street, Sidwell Street, Paris Street and also a brief visit to the bus station, which will soon close for redevelopment of the entire area. In August our cameras visited Sidmouth on the south Devon coast. This lovely Victorian seaside resort on the day of filming was hosting the annual Folk Festival and ‘Abus’ of Bristol had supplied an Optare Spectra, (AP04 BUS) for use as a shuttle bus from a temporary park-&-ride site to bring the crowds into the town. Also in August a brief visit to Newton Abbot was taken before visiting Torquay – the ‘English Riviera’. Here we see plenty of action at locations such as Cary Parade, Torbay Road, the Strand and Fleet Street. Look out for former Southport Corporation Leyland Titan PD2 (FFY 403) built in 1947 on sightseeing duties!

From Torquay we move onto Paignton. The busy bus station is our main location with plenty of action to enjoy. We also film in Victoria Street and Torbay Road. We continue our tour with a brief visit to Teignmouth where we see a purple liveried ‘hop2’ Scania Enviro400 double-decker on the Esplanade.

Dawlish is our next stop, home to the unique black swans, which we see floating along the ornamental stream. They also feature on the ‘hop222’ yellow liveried open-top buses. A September visit to Exeter is then recorded. We see the action on a busy Saturday afternoon at such locations as Paris Street, High Street, Sidwell Street and the bus station. Our final location for the contemporary bus scene is a short visit to Kingsbridge where we see buses in action along Promenade and the bus station.

The December visit by our cameras features an event where six ECW-bodied Bristol VRT/SL3 double-deckers participated in a ‘Red Bus VR Revival’ running day. We travel from Exeter to Barnstaple via Winkleigh and Bideford and then continue to Ilfracombe. To complete our programme we feature some of Malcolm King’s cine film of Paignton bus station in the National Bus Company era of the 1970s, then by comparison, some archive video footage shot by Martin Curtis, also of Paignton bus station, this time in the Deregulation era of the early 1990s – just see how things have changed!

Hop on board, then step back in time, on this unique open top heritage bus, that takes you on a 30 mile journey, through the most beautiful scenery in Somerset. What better way to experience breathtaking Exmoor, with its pretty villages, heather clad moors, deep valleys and dramatic coastline, on board an open-top double-decker.

Maybe stop for a cream tea, or discover the castle in Dunster, or head inland to Dunkery Beacon, Exmoor’s highest point. You discover picturesque Exford, and enjoy the carvery at the White Horse Inn, or follow the coast to Porlock with its pretty shops and pubs.

The 400 starts at Somerwest World in Minehead and takes over 2 hours to complete the route. This video is a souvenir of the journey. Filmed in late summer 2002 we take a journey on the bus covering almost the entire route.

The vehicles used are 1956 Bristol Lodekkas with Eastern Coachworks O60R bodies. They are a batch of three purchased from Southern Vectis earlier in the year. One is in overall cream livery, the other two in the attractive apple green and cream scheme still carried from their days on the Island. Two of the latter were used during the filming.

‘500’ returned to the Isle of Wight in October 2002 to take part in the Bus Museum Running Day. Our cameras accompany her on service 2 from the Quay to Cowes and back.

If you enjoy the delights of open-top bus travel - sit back and enjoy the ride!

Southampton Buses

Southampton Buses

Ref: IT1037D

Price:£17.95

Quantity:

The bus scene in Southampton has undergone many changes in the last thirty years. This video programme documents the current day operations filmed mostly in 2003. Local services are provided by First Hampshire and Dorset in the now familiar ‘Barbie’ livery, although some of the older vehicles are still in former all-over red of ‘Citybus’ days. Double deck vehicles of the older order are Leyland Atlanteans with East Lancs bodies - probably still the largest Atlantean fleet still in all day service any where in the world!! Single deckers are Leyland Lynx and a variety of Dennis Darts.

Giving a remarkable contrast are the Volvo B7LA / Wright Eclipse Fusion Artics, which will soon be moving north to Glasgow. Newer double deckers are Volvo ALX400s and mid-life vehicles are a fleet of Dennis Arrows which have moved down from First London, as well as some second-hand Olympians.

Filming takes place in the city centre, along Abovebar Street, Civic Centre and the busy bus station area. Spectacular shots are obtained on the Itchen bridge, with the QE2 visible in the background as she is about to make her final journey across the Atlantic before being replaced by the newer larger QM2. We take a ride on Atlantean 1268 just for good measure back to the city from the busy bus exchange in Woolston.

Our trip down memory lane is provided by rides on preserved Guy Arab 71 and 164. This was filmed in 2001 on the Town Quay area with other preserved members of the former Southampton City Transport fleet, including AEC Regents 350, 391 and 401. You can also indulge in a Photo Gallery from the 1970’s and 1980’s showing Regents, Atlanteans and Swifts in service in the city centre.

These are just some of the highlights in this video programme, there are guest appearances from Solent Blue Line and Wilts & Dorset vehicles, so sit back and enjoy the ride!

Southampton Buses Retrospective

Southampton Buses Retrospective

Ref: IT1122D

Price:£17.95

This is independent transport videos third visit to Southampton. This time for a retrospective look at the buses in this south coast city.

Our programme opens in 1975 with some cine footage from the camera of Bob Gray. Bob managed to capture the AEC Regents in service running alongside the smart fleet of Leyland Atlanteans that went on to serve Southampton up to 2005. These can be seen on our programme ‘The Last Southampton Atlantean’. Staying with Bob’s archive we can then view footage filmed on video in 1987, which features the new name of Citybus, introduced after Deregulation in 1986. Here the Atlantean is king, some now painted in a reversed livery. We continue onto 1992, where Bob has captured yet more Atlanteans, which are now painted in the overall red Southampton Citybus livery. All this is but a distant memory, but is it……?

On Sunday 30th May 2010, Phil Blair of PB Bus Marketing Specialists organised a running day to mark the imminent closure of Portswood bus depot, which was home to Southampton City Transport, and has been associated with public transport since the late 1800’s. A series of routes were ran by former Southampton City Transport vehicles, with a Hants & Dorset route thrown in for good measure, through Portswood to the city centre and other areas of the city. Our cameras were on hand to capture the day for your enjoyment. There is plenty of action, with location filming in Portswood and in the city centre. There are rides on board Guy Arab 71 (LOW 217) and AEC Regent V 353 (373 FCR). Leyland Atlanteans 133 and 274 are in service with Leyland Olympian 289 (E289 HRV) as well as Regents 367, 401 and 402 and not forgetting Park Royal Regent V 318 (318 AOW) making its debut after a long and excellent restoration.

So lets go back in time and enjoy Southampton Buses Retrospective!

Salisbury Reds 2015-2020

Salisbury Reds 2015-2020

Ref: IT1369D

Price:£16.99

Quantity:

The main bus operator in the lovely historic cathedral city of Salisbury in the county of Wiltshire is Go South Coast, with their buses branded as ‘Salisbury Reds’. The previous fleet name was Wilts & Dorset, well known in the area for many years. The original Wilts & Dorset Motor Services company started operations in 1915 and operated until 1972 when it merged with neighbouring Hants & Dorset. The Wilts & Dorset name reappeared in 1983 when Hants & Dorset was split prior to deregulation and was then bought by a management buy-out in 1987. The Go-Ahead Group bought the privatised company in 2003.

Here we follow the Salisbury Reds fleet operating in Salisbury over a five-year period from 2015 to 2020, when the independent transport videos cameras visited the city on nine separate occasions! Filming locations include Blue Boar Row, Castle Street, Silver Street, Brown Street, Milford Street, New Canal, South Western Road and Fisherton Street to name but a few. Other locations include Odstock Road and Downton Road just out of the city centre.

Apart from the Salisbury Reds buses we see other operators that serve the city, namely Stagecoach with their services to Andover and Firstbus with their services to Bath and Warminster, latterly in the smart ‘Discover’ livery. We also see the orange buses from the Wheelers fleet, which stopped operating in Salisbury in 2018. Other Go South Coast brands seen are ‘Tourist’ and ‘morebus’ who operate the X3 service that runs to the city from Bournemouth. Operated by Ringwood depot we see ‘morebus’ liveried ADL Enviro400 double-deckers running into the city up until November 2016, as in December 2016 they were replaced by a new fleet of ADL Enviro400MMC double-deckers complete with tables on the upper-deck and a striking new livery. The Salisbury Reds livery was all-over dark red until the beginning of 2019 when a new dark grey and bright red livery was introduced. We see this livery spreading across the fleet as our visits reach 2020.

Probably the highlight here is the launch on Thursday 30th January 2020, of the first electric buses for Go South Coast. Allocated to the park-&-ride route from Britford park-&-ride site via the city centre to the Petersfinger park-&-ride site, we film the launch of the three BYD ADL Enviro200EV single-deckers seating 34 with space for 44 standees. Numbered 901-903 (HF69 CHL/N/O) they are part of a £1.2m investment programme and are branded ‘electricreds’. We join the BBC television ‘South Today’ programme presenter and cameraman for a publicity journey from Britford park-&-ride to the city centre where all three buses were on display for the public to inspect. We take a good look at these buses that includes another ride to Britford when we film the driver’s view of the route.

We conclude with further scenes of Salisbury Reds buses in action in the city during February 2020. We hope you enjoy your visit to this historic city and enjoy the ‘reds’.

The Final Farewell to the Bristol VR - Wilts & Dorset

The Final Farewell to the Bristol VR - Wilts & Dorset

Ref: IT1107D

Price:£16.99

Quantity:

The Final Farewell - Saturday 28th.March 2009

You can go back to 1940 when the original Wilts & Dorset company first ran ECW bodied Bristols. On Saturday 28th March 2009 an end of an era took place when the current Wilts & Dorset said goodbye to the final combination of that body and chassis – the ECW bodied Bristol VR. This also marked the end of everyday service operation of ECW / Bristol buses with a former Tilling Group / N.B.C. operator. The independent transport videos cameras were on hand to record the event for posterity.

The day starts at the Wilts & Dorset Castle Street depot in Salisbury where the three VRs for the day are prepared for service. They are Wilts & Dorset liveried 4413 (BFX 666T), Poole Tramways commemorative liveried 4422 (ELJ 214V) and Damory Coaches liveried 5069 (GEL 685V).

We then move to the bus station in the city where the first pickups were made, including a photo shoot with the local Salisbury newspaper!

Our first service is duplicating route 8 to Amesbury and back with 4413 and 5069. Service 5 is then covered to Pewsey with 4413 and 4422. Following on from here we do Salisbury local service 57 with 4413 and 5069.

The afternoon starts with the long run to Tidworth with 4413 and 5069 taking up the duty and the run back to Salisbury Blue Boar Row.

For the finale all three VRs run service 44 to Woodfalls Cross, returning to the city as service 43.

Our cameras then join 4413 for the final run through the bus station and back to Castle Street depot for the last time.

There is plenty of action, with road side footage as well as driver and passenger eye views. The evocative sounds of the Gardner engines are also captured as they are now consigned to history.

[Aside - a potted history....

Hants and Dorset had 150 VRTs delivered new between December 1972 and December 1980. The first entered service in Poole on the 1 route to Bournemouth and the last also in Poole for the South Wessex Market Analyis Project.

In April 1983, The National Bus Company (NBC) split Hants & Dorset into smaller areas with Hampshire Bus receiving 69 VRs and Wils & Dorset 81 examples including 6 former Southern Vectic standard VRs which had been swapped for the 6 Convertible Open Tops originally delivered to Hants & Dorset.

Until 1977, many VRs introduced One-Person-Operated (OPO) onto urban services with the inter-urban services being converted to OPO single deck. It was not until the service changed connected with the Market Analysis projects throughout the Hants & Dorset empire in 1979/80 that agreement was reached to work widespread double deck rural OPO routes.

In 1987, Wilts & Dorset was privatised under a management buyout and 18 second-hand VRs were acquired, 3 ECW and 15 MCW bodied examples.

Two Bristol VRs were transferred to sister company Damory Coaches in May 1994 ro operated revised school contracts and Tuesday Market Day service to Salisbury and further examples followed, remaining in service until January 2009.

During 1997, 26 Wilts & Dorset Bristol VRs received a substantial body overhaul with W&D moquette. Two Damory VRs were refurbished with a different moquette and yellow stantions. Refurbishiment was intended to extend their life by a further 10 years. Their original planned service life was 16 years so this meant they far outlived newer Leyland Olympians by several years.

In August 2003, The Go-Ahead Group purchased the Wilts & Dorset group of companies. Despite rumours at that time of the instant demise of the VRs, it was only in late 2008 and into 2009 that they were withdrawn from service with the delivery of new Scania Omnicity Double Deckers. This saw vehicle movements between the fleets rendering surplus not only the last VRs but also the last ECW Olympian and the first life-epired Optare Spectras.]

Warminster Vintage Bus Running Day 2011

Warminster Vintage Bus Running Day 2011

Ref: IT1146D

Price:£16.99

Quantity:

It was with great pleasure for the independent transport videos cameras to be invited to record the 15th Warminster Vintage Bus Running Day that took place on Sunday 9th October 2011. This superb event sets out to re-create the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s era of bus operation in West Wiltshire, the 2011 event is a full size one featuring almost 40 buses and coaches. This video programme will take you back to a bygone age of bus operation featuring vehicles which are firm favourites with the enthusiast and general public alike.

Our day starts in Dorset, at the ‘depot’ of preserved, former Bristol Omnibus, Bristol RELL6L / ECW B50F 1257 (DAE 511K). We board the bus for the run to Warminster through the beautiful Dorset and Wiltshire countryside enjoying the sounds from its Leyland 0680 engine! On arrival at the ‘Coach Station’ in Warminster we see the buses and coaches arriving from all over the area to take up their duties for the day. Many familiar fleets are represented from days gone by. Bristol Omnibus, Wilts & Dorset, Hants & Dorset, Southern National, Western National, Southern Vectis, Bath Services to name but a few! Also from further afield – London Transport, Trent, Brighton Hove & District, Crosville and also a Bristol RE from New Zealand!!

Further filming takes place at the Market Place and on Station Road at various times during the day.

W
e have a further ride on DAE 511K to Gillingham via Mere where the Warminster Town Crier who was travelling on the bus gets off to wish the bus ‘Happy 40th Birthday.’ It was about this time in 1971 that the building of it was completed at Eastern Coach Works. Later in the day our second camera films the events at Mere where the Salisbury Street car park was turned into a busy interchange for the day.

Our filming draws to a close at the ‘Coach Station’. We then board DAE 511K for the journey back to Dorset.

As a bonus we have added some of the highlights from the 2010 event for your added enjoyment.

We hope you enjoy this programme and we would like to express our thanks to Bob Eade and to “H&DW&D” for organising this excellent event.

The Last Southampton Atlantean Day

The Last Southampton Atlantean Day

Ref: IT1057D

Price:£16.99

Quantity:

On our second trip to Southampton, independent transport videos document the last day of Leyland Atlantean operation in the city.

Synonymous with Southampton, the Atlantean first entered service in 1968 and in 2005 they were finally retired from service after an honourable 37 years of operation.

The day starts at Mayflower Park where farewell celebrations were centred. Here we see a range of former Southampton City Transport vehicles ranging from Guy Arabs, A.E.C. Regents and examples of Atlanteans, as well as other vehicles from companies associated with the Southampton area.

We sample a ride on the ‘last’ Atlantean in service. 270 (FTR 270X) as it operates the 8/8A service to Lordshill a route familiar to the type. Our cameras record the activities at Vincents Walk where most of the services operate from, giving interesting comparisons with the old and new order.

We travel on board preserved Atlantean 252 (YRV 252V), returned to her traditional colours and sporting a celebratory advert and capture many elements of riding on an Atlantean upstairs and downstairs.

After arriving at Mayflower Park the vehicles prepare to go on parade through the city back to Portswood depot.

So, our final ride is documented to the full. We use two cameras one on board 252 the other on 270, the vehicle that performed the last ever Atlantean service in Southampton. From Vincents Walk we enjoy a ride on the last Atlantean to Lordshill. We also view the journey from 252 as 270 roars its way through the city streets on a damp murky February evening. From Lordshill 270 journeys back towards Portswood carrying enthusiasts for a final photo shoot. An atmospheric end to the day sees a line up of Atlanteans posing for the camera.

We conclude with a visit to the ‘Gosport 800’ celebrations where we sample a ride on numerically the last Atlantean 276 (KOW 276Y) that paid a visit to the rally from Southampton. A fitting end to a video celebrating these superb vehicles.
