The days have long since gone when the major bus operator along the North Wales coast was Crosville Motor Services. In Chester, home to Crosville’s head office, the streets were also graced with the Massey bodied Guy Arabs of Chester Corporation buses from the late 1940s to the 1970s mingling with the Bristol/ECW vehicles of Crosville. All that has now changed, fast forward to 2014 and we see the main operator along the North Wales coast is Arriva Cymru (formally Crosville Wales) and in Chester we have Stagecoach (Merseyside & South Lancs) along with Arriva Cymru and Arriva North West. Local serves operated by Arriva in Chester are branded as Chester City Bus. There are also a number of independent operators that provide services in Chester filling the gaps where the big groups don’t operate. On this programme we see buses operating from Helms of Eastham, Arrowebrook Coaches, Aintree Coachline, Vale Travel, D. Jones & Son from Wrexham and the now defunct G.H.A. Coaches.

Our filming begins in May 2014 at Llandudno, on the same weekend as the famous ‘Llandudno Transport Festival’, where we see the latest ADL400 double deckers operating with Arriva Cymru alongside single deckers from the fleet. Locations include Mostyn Broadway, The Parade and Mostyn Street. We then move along the coast to Colywn Bay and film Arriva vehicles on Abergele Road and Conway Road. We see a number of MPD Dennis Darts, now removed from the fleet due to recent DDA legislation. Our next location is Rhyl. Filming takes place in the bus station and along the High Street. Here we see low-height Wrightbus bodied VDL DB300 double deckers with ‘Cymru Coastliner’ branding recognising the famous route started by Crosville in the mid 1960s. Our next stop is the bus station in Prestatyn where we catch up with more buses from the Arriva Cymru fleet. Now we have a look at Chester, starting with some archive video from the camera of Malcolm King shot in 1990. We see Daimler Fleetlines and Dennis Dominators from the erstwhile Chester Corporation fleet, as well as a Bristol VRT and Leyland Olympians from the Crosville and Crosville Wales fleets.

Moving to the contemporary era we begin our filming in 2014 along Northgate Street and Foregate Street – just see how things have changed! A visit in May 2015 calls at the Bus Exchange and Northgate Street, and later on that year our cameras visit Foregate Street, Pepper Street and return to the Bus Exchange where we see an open top Alexander ALX400 DAF DB250, 3990 (S243 JUA), branded as ‘Roller Coaster’ from the Arriva depot at Rhyl on driver route learning duties. Further filming takes place in Northgate Street, Gorse Stacks and Frodsham Street.

Our visits during 2016 are also of great interest. We see the introduction of ‘Stagecoach Gold’ branded services with refurbished Solos on route 5 and new ADL Enviro300 single deckers for routes 1 and 2, the Chester - Liverpool service. Also new ADL200MMC single deckers for the rerouted Chester Park & Ride services replacing the Wrightbus Eclipse Volvo B7RLEs introduced by Firstbus in 2009. Locations include the Bus Exchange, Frodsham Street, Vicar’s Lane, Love Street, Union Street and many more. We are sure you will enjoy this packed visit to Chester and the North Wales coast where the bus interest still carries on!

Not to overlook the urban days of the VR, we include some of Alan's footage taken not that long ago within Bristol, Bath and Weston, of City Line and Badgerline buses together with some of the many small operators who chose the VR, not just for schools work, but on competing services.

Finally, a photo gallery of Bristol Omnibus VRs taken during their heyday in the 1970s & 1980s.

2004 saw the centenary of public transport in Preston and to mark the occasion we took our cameras to the city where we had unrivalled access to the present day operations of Preston Bus Limited.

The company is unique as it is the only former local authority operation sold to employees in the early 1990’s that remains privately owned by its management and employees. It is a delight from the enthusiast’s point of view as more than a dozen Leyland Atlanteans purchased new in the 1980’s remain in service, as do Leyland Lynxes dating from the late 1980’s/early 1990’s.

However there is also a distinctly modern image to the company’s fleet of over 120 vehicles with low floor Tridents and Solos introduced from 1999/2000 onwards to enhance a number of existing routes into “Super Routes” with more intensive services, new bus stops and bus priorities to speed up journey times. These routes form part of a Quality Bus Partnership with Lancashire County Council and Preston City Council and Preston Bus is proud to have been the first bus operator in Lancashire to introduce them.

Further innovation has seen the introduction of Real-Time Passenger Information with displays at over 80 bus stops throughout the city and a new orbital route will shortly be introduced as a result of a “Kickstart” award from a successful Urban Bus Challenge bid. Looking a little further ahead the company is one of only 3 operators in Europe to benefit from the “Civitas” initiative that will see 7 hybrid double deckers take to the streets of Preston in an effort to further reduce pollution.

We go behind the scenes at Deepdale Road Depot and view the workshops and bodyshop; see the bus wash in action and enjoy the afternoon run-out with Olympians and Atlanteans leaving for schools journeys. Then jump aboard Atlantean 152 (GFV 152W) for a trip along many of Preston Bus routes and see Tridents, Lynxes, Metroriders and Solos in action plus some Atlanteans in all day service!

Our cameras then move to the city’s bus station where from the integral multi-storey car park we get a birds-eye view of afternoon peak services. The bus station which was built in 1969 is scheduled to close once a new station has been built as part of a large redevelopment plan for the city centre. We finish with a ‘Photo Gallery’ depicting Preston vehicles operating in 1975, 1982 and 1986.

In the first of a series focusing upon PROVINCIAL, we take a look at vehicles of the NBC and PEOPLES PROVINCIAL living their last days in service with ‘FIRST’ or enjoying a new life in Preservation.

We first offer you the privilege of seeing Leyland National SBK 740S revisit her old haunts whilst on a visit from Scotland. Preserved in 2001, this is the first time that she has returned home since withdrawal. Filmed in the Fareham and Gosport area we recreate her final months in service with scenes at Wych Lane, Stubbington and Gosport. The opportunity is also taken to take a ride on board to savour the sound of her clattering engine and recall the NBC’s interior design!

Next we journey into the night on Leyland National 2. A301 KJT as she operates an evening tour around Gosport. The journey starts with preparation against a mood-setting dusk. She later meets preserved sister vehicle A302 KJT which is also filmed in action, before some exclusive night time scenes on the Gosport - Fareham corridor.

To bring us up to date we next focus upon the current ‘FIRST’ operations with Dennis Darts and Volvos on former Leyland National routes. Once again the filming concentrates in the Fareham and Gosport region where we visit Fareham Bus Station, Gosport and Wych Lane where the unique chance is taken to view the vehicles from more novel vantage points.

Whilst concentrating on the modern scene we enjoy some views of the final Bristol VR, LWU 471V in her last months of service. Filmed in late 2003 we see her in the Fareham and Gosport area where VR operation was common 10 years ago. We take a ride on board both upstairs and down to enjoy the sights and sounds of VR operation.

We follow this up with one of our popular photo galleries reliving memories of the area under NBC control. We also get to see some of the vehicles already featured in their earlier days alongside Bristol REs’, LHs’ and the last remaining Seddons. So if you are a fan of Leyland Nationals and Bristol VRs’ sit back and enjoy ‘70s operations today!

itv would like to thank Gordon Mills, John Sherwin and Darren Marshall for the use of their vehicles.

Welcome to the second Provincial video where we turn back the clock and profile earlier Provincial vehicles.

The first highlight is a journey on board preserved A.E.C. Regal, No.24 (CG 9607) on it’s way to the Showbus 2004 rally. Enjoy the splendour of some excellent driving through scenic country roads following fleetmate – No.35 (BOR 767). The return journey is on board No.35 which is a pre-war A.E.C. Regent 1 that carries it’s original Park Royal body containing period features such as a clock and passenger notices from a bygone era. We then look back at No.35 shortly after restoration on cine film shot some 30 years ago!

We then move onto the Provincial Society’s annual bus rally at Stokes Bay, Gosport. This provides an insight into the activities at one of the south's larger bus rallies. During the rally we sample the ‘road run’ and also take a ride on board preserved Provincial Bristol RE No.12 (ECG 112K) as it runs around it’s old haunts on a trip to Gosport bus station before returning to the rally site.

In an independent transport videos exclusive we take a visit to the Provincial Society’s successful ‘All aboard for Provvie’s Past’ exhibition that was held in Fareham. Here you can see the lesser seen parts of the Company’s past, focusing upon everything from trams to tickets!

Finally we round off with a trip on board Provincial Guy Arab 1 No.55 (EHO 228) around Fareham in connection with the exhibition. At the end of it’s journey we see 55 being parked up in her home depot of Hoeford, capturing her in classic surroundings.

So its ‘All aboard for Provvie’s Past’ – on video! Enjoy the ride!

The AEC Routemaster bus must be one of the most recognisable icons in the world. Although development began in the late 1940’s it was not until 1954 that the first prototype, RM1 (SLT 56) was revealed to the public at the Commercial Motor Show at Earls Court on 24th September 1954. After extensive trials it entered public service on the 8th February 1956 from Cricklewood Garage. Three further prototypes followed, before production commenced. A total of 2,876 Routemasters were built, numerically the last Routemaster built for London Transport was RML2760 (SMK 760F) in early 1968.

So, 60 years on a celebration was held at Finsbury Park in north London over the weekend of the 12th and 13th July 2014. The independent transport videos cameras were on hand to record the event on both days. Filming starts early on Saturday morning as we record some of the Routemasters that stayed overnight as well as a good number of Routemasters arriving to form the main display. There is plenty of action for you to see as the buses take up their places. Notable arrivals are obviously the star of the show, RM1 (SLT 56), green RM2 (SLT 57) which has recently been restored to its original condition proudly displaying its original style bonnet and radiator grill, and Leyland engined RML3 (SLT 58). We also see the one and only rear engined Routemaster, FRM1 (KGY 4D). Other historic buses in attendance includes ‘B’ type B2737 (LH 8186) and DLA1 (R101 GNW) in Arriva training bus livery, being the first low floor bus in London, an Alexander ALX400 bodied DAF. Our cameras now move out of the park to Seven Sisters Road to sample two rides by Routemaster on free service X60, the first on RML2344 (CUV 344C) and the second on board RCL2226 (CUV 226C). These rides complete our filming of the first day.

Sunday morning filming commences early as the Routemasters arrive to take up their positions. Even more examples arrive together with historic buses in the shape of STL2377 (EGO 426), RT113 (FXT 288), RT2177 (KGU 106), L2 (A102 SYE) and ‘New Routemaster’ LT60 (LTZ 1060). At midday we recorded the ‘Buses from the Decades Parade’, and later in the day the ‘Parade of significant Routemasters’, all from different locations. In all, a comprehensive record of the day for you to enjoy. Our thanks must also go to the Routemaster Association for putting on this excellent event.

An archive video presentation of the iconic AEC Routemaster bus running in service with three major operators, and two independents in southern England. The video was shot by transport photographer Malcolm King in the late 1980’s and features the Routemasters running in service with Southampton CityBus, Southend Transport, United Counties, and independents, Verwood Transport and Poole Bay Services.

The programme starts in Southampton. A city well used to the AEC product as they had only just said goodbye to their last open platform AEC Regent V in 1981, having said that it would often return to traffic at peak time, and is seen on this programme making such an appearance! It was May 1987 that the Routemaster commenced operation in Southampton on a new service, the 16 between the city centre and the Millbrook Estate. The initial fleet of Routemasters consisted of 12 vehicles and were painted in Southampton red with an off white waist band and large ‘CityBus’ fleetnames as well as route ‘branding’ in yellow and black on all available advertising locations being carried on numbers 402-407. Two further services commenced in August with Routemasters, these being the 17A and 23. Numbers 408-413 carried smaller fleetnames and when a further six arrived, 414-419, they were in an overall red livery, also with small fleetnames. Malcolm filmed them in action both in and out of the city, also capturing the contemporary buses of the day from Solent Blueline, Hampshire Bus, Provincial as well as Leyland Atlanteans in the CityBus fleet.

Our second location on this programme is Southend. Having hired and borrowed Routemasters in the mid 1980’s it was not until 1988 that Southend Transport decided to purchase its own Routemasters. Services commenced in September 1988 and over their time with the undertaking they covered a number of services, namely the 1, 3A, 7, 9A, 29 and 63. A fleet of 12 were operated in a smart livery of Southend blue, off white with a blue and red stripe. Malcolm visited Southend and captured them operating from the busy town centre bus station and out to the suburbs. We also see other Southend Transport vehicles in action alongside Eastern National ones.

The final ‘large’ operator on this programme is United Counties. The first examples took to the streets of Bedford in February 1988 on service 101. They appeared in the ‘deregulation’ livery of ‘Tilling’ green with cream and orange diagonal and horizontal stripe, and were branded as ‘Routemaster’. They also appeared on the 161 route again in Bedford and the 1, 2A, 2C and 4 in Corby. Malcolm caught them in action for you to enjoy.

Our final visit is to Poole on the south coast, where we briefly see both Verwood Transport and a ‘hired in’ Routemaster with Poole Bay Services, in action.

So take your seat and enjoy this nostalgic video presentation featuring the iconic Routemaster running in service many miles away for its natural home in London!

An archive video presentation of the iconic AEC Routemaster bus running in service with three major operators in northern England. The video was shot by transport photographer Malcolm King in the late 1980’s and features the Routemasters running in service with Blackpool Transport, Burnley & Pendle and Cumberland Motor Services.

We start this programme in the seaside town of Blackpool. It was in January 1986 that Blackpool Transport evaluated a Leyland engined Routemaster, and it was from there that a small fleet of Routemasters was built up to operate services 12 and 55, and later the 14 and 22/ 22A. The livery chosen was the pre-war livery of red and white with lining out which complimented the lines of the Routemaster very well. Malcolm visited Blackpool on a number of occasions to capture them in action, running along the seafront and in St Annes to name but two locations. We also see other Routemasters attending a rally on the promenade as well as the contemporary bus fleet in action, and not forgetting the trams!

Our second Routemaster fleet is Burnley & Pendle Transport. Having evaluated Blackpool’s RM1735 (735 DYE) in February 1988, Burnley & Pendle built up an initial fleet of five Routemasters. They were branded "EastEnders" after the popular BBC television series. Each bus was given a name after a character in the series. Painted in a smart dark red and cream livery the Routemasters operated on the 19, 23 and 25 services, although initially some of them ran in their former London Buses colours. Malcolm caught up with them in both Burnley and Colne, as well as some ‘out of town’ locations, so different from the streets of London they had been used to.

The final location on this programme is Carlisle, to see the Routemasters operating with Cumberland Motor Services, which had just been taken over by Stagecoach. Routemasters commenced operations here in October 1987 when eight vehicles were obtained for the 61 service. They later ran on the 60A and 61A services. Six of the Routemasters were obtained from Kelvin Scottish, and the other two direct from London Buses. They were finished in a livery of CMS red with a vertical and diagonal caramel stripe. Malcolm filmed the buses at various locations, from the housing estates to the city centre during the day and early evening.

So take your seat and enjoy this nostalgic video presentation featuring the iconic Routemaster running in service many miles away for its natural home in London

The Bristol VR on home ground may no longer mean a City Line example battling for supremacy on congested city streets. Instead the VR can be found feeling the wind rushing through its vents as it served the rural communities in northern Somerset.

Between the fields and hedgerows, past dry stone walls and picturesque cottages, along narrow lanes and up steep Mendip hills, VRs that run on once-a-week services 683 and 791 by Abus of Bristol take them through this lush scenery to Wells and Weston-super-Mare. Names like Blagdon, Priddy, West Harptree and Temple Cloud are among the points served. Additionally the VRs tackle the narrow streets in the former mining communities of Radstock and Paulton.

Both the 683 and 791 have the same regular driver, well know Bristol fan Allan Macfarlane, who is keen to share this marvellous countryside with yout, through this video.

Wednesday 10th May, 2000 was the first day of operation of Tramlink carrying the general public. Farepaying passengers were carried from the following day on the first section - route 3 from Addington to Croydon.

This video was shot during the first month of opening of the whole network, and features a number of 'first' public duties for the trams. We join the tram at Sandilands on 10th May, which was for invited guests, following behind the two official trams that carried various officials and local dignitaries. They had cut the tape a little earlier at Addington. We follow route 3 into and around Croydon and then over the hills to Addington.

Extensive footage shows various trams around Croydon on this first day of service. We also witness the bus operations in Croydon, of which some of the routes will eventually be replaced by the trams.

There are scenes of the other opening ceremony for route 2 at Beckenham Junction on Tuesday 23rd May and a week later the official's tram travelling through Merton Park on the first day of service on the Wimbledon route - 1. We continue with tram activity across the system at various locations, with plenty of action between Reeves Corner and Sandilands where there is street running. Again, a further study of the bus operations mainly, in East Croydon, where we see trams and buses running together.

Also featured are some of the buses that operate the feeder routes, T31, T32 and T33, into Addington Village interchange.

A fascinating programme for any one interested in the modern transport scene and indeed those who can recall the original trams that stopped running in 1952!

Chester Corporation Tramways started operations on January 1st 1902. It was not until February 1930 that motor buses took to the road in the historic City of Chester.

This video celebrates the 100th anniversary of municipal passenger transport in the city. The programme starts with a look at the current day operations - Dennis Darts, Dominators, Leyland Olympians etc.

Next we visit Birkenhead to see semi-retired Guy Arab No.1 operating a shuttle service at the Wirral Bus & Tram Museum’s open day.

We then go to the Scottish Bus Museum at Lathalmond, Scotland - where we put Guy Arab No.42 through her paces, bringing back memories of the familiar sounds associated with the type. No.1 then has a treat! We take her from Birkenhead, home to Chester, to run around her old familiar routes, to the pretty villages of Eccleston, Christleton, Littleton and through the historic arched gateways into and out of the walled City of Chester.

To bring back further memories there are 100 photos in the ‘Photo Gallery’ showing examples of the fleet from the late 1960’s to the 1990’s. We finish the video with an exclusive! The first views of No.10, the 1989 Olympian repainted into a version of the tram/ early bus livery of apple green and ivory, with an added maroon band.

Thanks must go to Bob Tennant, John Lee, Norman Moore, Martin Connolly and Bob Armour for their help in making this video possible.

It was on 21st April 1902 that the first electric tram ran in Warrington heralding the start of public transport in the town. 1913 saw the first motor buses running, and by 1935 the trams had been replaced by the buses. In 1986 the formation of Warrington Borough Transport took place, taking over from the

Corporation Transport Department.

On Monday 3rd June, 2002 a special Open Day was held at the departments Wilderspool garage to celebrate the 100 years. This video is a fascinating pictorial account of the preparations and the main event. The day before 92 buses had to be moved out of the 2 sheds to a nearby car park so as to house some of the visiting vehicles on the day - this never to be seen again event is captured on film together with the washing of some of the vehicles ready for the big day. Preserved and current vehicles arrive from all over the north west and are seen parking up the night before and on the day. The Mayor of Warrington visits the show and awards prizes for vehicles judged best on the day. Shuttle services were run using Warrington and visiting vehicles. At the end of the day our cameras capture all the visiting vehicles leaving the garage, and then we witness the return into the sheds of the fleet in double quick time. A unique event on a weekend that also marked the Golden Jubilee of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II.

The programme concludes with a Photo Gallery of Warrington buses in service during the 1970’s and 1980’s.

Amongst these are shots of Leyland Atlantean 75 decorated for the 75th Anniversary celebrations held at Chester in 1977. Chester City Transport also celebrates its Centenary in 2002 and four of their vehicles were visitors to this event. Chester’s buses are the subject of another of our videos, now available. We would like to thank Nigel Featham, M.D. of W.B.T. and all his staff for making this video possible. Here’s to the next 100.

Numbers of the Bristol VRT are reducing rapidly as we enter the 21st Century. However, Johnson Brothers (Tours) of Hodthorpe, near Worksop and Redfern Travel now have a total of 49, of which 40 are serviceable and are used daily on sto gechool contracts. The fleet is made up of series I, II and III types, both Gardner and Leyland examples.

In recent years a ‘Running Day’ has been organised by Scott Johnson and a group of enthusiasts. This video is a record of one such day that took place on Saturday 13th April 2002.

Representatives of each type of VRT were used on the day - journeys took us to Sheffield on a series I and II to visit Burgin’s of Tinsley, operator of ex. Southern Vectis VRT’s. Then a ride on NGM168G a former Central SMT and Southern Vectis series I dating from November 1969. We then travelled trough picturesque Cumber Park to Redfern Travel in Mansfield, paying a call at Tim Draper at Tibshelf that owns ex. Maidstone & District BKE849T. Both Leyland and Gardner examples are sampled on this delightful trip. Our final ride is by ex Crosville DVG266 on an evening journey through the north Nottinghamshire countryside and back to Worksop.

Many of the VRTs have been refurbished to a very high standard by Johnson Bros.. This can been seen on the ‘rides’ during the video. There are also many ‘line side’ views of the VR’s in action.

We conclude the programme with a Photo Gallery of VRT’s in service with their original owners that now operate with Johnson Brothers.

We would like to thank Scott Johnson of Johnson Brothers (Tours) for supplying the vehicles on the day, and to Richard Newman for the excellent organisation of the event.
