Malta has always appealed to the UK bus enthusiast due to the vast variety of vehicles operated on this beautiful Mediterranean island. From the early 1980's large numbers of secondhand British vehicles have been bought. These were AEC Swifts from London Transport, of which many are still in service today, some having been converted to underfloor engine! Leyland Tiger Cubs and many Duple and Plaxton bodied coaches. A number of ECW bodied Bristol LH's also arrived from many former National Bus Company fleets - most of which still operate today, and can be seen on this video programme.

1995 saw the change to the present livery, and 1996 the change to the present registration system. 1997 was the year that introduced low floor service buses in the shape of Dennis Darts and Optare Excel's, as you will see these are outnumbered by the traditional Bedfords and Thames vehicles, but could the new order for the future.

Gozo, Malta's smaller sister island also runs immaculate vehicles, similar to the ones on Malta, of which we make a brief visit on this video.

Most of the vehicles on both islands are individually owned, and all share the same livery - yellow, orange and white on Malta, and grey, maroon and white on Gozo. The route system is however controlled centrally by the Passenger Transport Authority.

This video shows the vehicles operating out of Valletta bus station, and on many other locations on the island. You can also share the experience of a number of 'bus rides', all of which will make you want to pack your bags and try The Maltese Bus for yourself!
