This volume features the film of one man, Douglas Cartmel. A true steam and railway enthusiast, he was quite prolific with a cine camera and his material captures the last ten years of steam traction on British Railways from 1958 to 1968 as he moved around England in search of ever decreasing steam traction.

Like many others he started with black and white still photography around 1948. As an introduction, we start with a few of his historic prints taken in the early 1950s.

His National Service days were spent in the south of England. Using his black and white and colour cine film we can relive the sights such as Southern Lord Nelsons, King Arthurs, Schools, 700 Black Motors, H, E4 and Terrier Tanks all hard at work at locations as diverse as Woking, Eastbourne, Guildford, Folkestone, Tonbridge, Brighton and Salisbury.

Then to the Western Region to see Kings, Castles, Counties, 28xx 2-8-0s and pannier tanks at Paddington, Didcot, Salisbury, Weymouth, Wrexham and Saltney Junction.

Doug lived in the Stockport area in the London Midland Region. Here Duchesses, Scots, Jubilees, Black 5s, Crabs and 2-8-0s all caught Doug's attention at a variety of locations including Rowsley, Cheadle Heath, Gowhole, Saltney, Blackburn and the Cromford & High Peak. Railway,

There were many photographic opportunities as steam retreated to the North West especially around the Manchester and Stockport areas. Doug also visited industrial locations at Astley Green, Yates Duxbury, Stanton Iron Works and Ifton colliery. Spot the crane tank!

His local sheds were at Edgeley, Newton Heath and Heaton Mersey. Here he witnessed the working environment of steam in all its moods with some atmospheric views of steam normally only captured on still photography. We see scenes of coaling, smokebox cleaning, turning of engines, taking on water and a brilliant fire dropping sequence on a Britannia pacific!

Fifty classes of locomotives and a hundred different engines feature in this volume and all seen through the good camera lens (a Bell & Howell) of an enthusiast with an eye for detail and the unusual. Witness the pantomime at Gowhole when a Black 5’s crew take water!

An excellent record of ten years of steam, from someone who really did appreciate the steam age in Britain.
