In the 1970s large portions of the rail network in the Republic of South Africa were still entirely worked by steam. During this period Geoff Monks, Ray Hammond and Dave Rodgers visited the country and recorded a variety of type on cine film.

Beginning in the Northern Transvaal, we see 15F and 19D 4-8-2s on the Pietersburg to Tzaneen line, followed by visits to Germiston, Springs and Witbank.

We then move to the main lines of the Orange Free State which were dominated by 15F and 23 Class 4-8-2s and the famous 25NC 4-8-4s. In Natal, several Garratt classes are seen prior to their early demise. The programme concludes with visits to industrial locations in the Tranvaal and Natal where a variety of ex-main line and pure industrial types are seen.

The first part of the programme takes a comprehensive look at the Bethlehem to Bloemfontein line with Class 25NC 4-8-4s on the through trains and 15F 4-8-2s on the various shorter workings at the Bloemfontein end.

Moving to the Bloemfontein to Kroonstad trunk line, the final days of steam are witnessed with immaculate Class 23 4-8-2s charging through Glen and Karee.

The programme concludes on the Bloemfontein to Kimberley line which, despite being single track, saw a continuous stream of traffic worked by more 4-8-4s. As a finale, teh Wardale modified Class 19D 2644 and the Class 26, 3450 work a train double-headed and then 3450 is seen singley in normal traffic.

Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia, has been called the land of the Garratts for this type of motive power dominated the main line steam scene for many years and some examples were still at work in the late 1990s.

The West Nicholson branch is next visited with 14As working goods and mixed trains through rolling bush and through more rugged scenery. The section concludes with pacing shots of a 15A + 16A combination.

The final section covers the Victoria Falls line, firstly around Wankie with 15ths and 20ths passing through fine scenery and then to Victoria Falls. Not forgotten is the Wankie Colliery system with its green 4-8-2s.

Woth informative commentary and dubbed sound. Sourced from 8mm colour cine film mastered on professional equipment.
