Bicester Military Railway (50-mins) (DVD)

Bicester Military Railway (50-mins) (DVD)

Ref: TR807D

Loose coupled freight trains with their distinctive clatter and the daily local 'pick up' freight train, are now sadly a thing of the past - at least as far as British Rail is concerned. However, there is one complete railway system which still handles huge amounts of traffic in this traditional manner:- the Bicester Military Railway.

This unique video gives a rare and privileged insight into the day to day operations of one of the countries largest industrial railways. The fascinating and busy Central Ordinance Depot, which is not generally open to the public, still uses an extensive standard gauge railway for the vast majority of it's internal movements between the various storehouses.

Each day sees an enormous amount of individual movements and marshalling operations. As well as internal traffic flows, featuring many unique and interesting wagon variants no longer found on main line systems, the railway also handles significant amounts of main line traffic through it's connection to British Rail.

This superbly made programme also deals with MOD main line traffic since the demise of Speedlink and there's a visit to the Museum of Army Transport at Beverley, Yorkshire, to look at some other unusual relics used by both MOD and the Army. Not forgetting a close look at the immaculate locomotive fleet at Bicester, a cab ride around the extensive site, and a close look at marshalling operations featuring loose shunting and 'pick up' freights.

This exciting programme allows the viewer to explore all aspects of Britain's biggest military railway, which was originally built during 1941. Also included are many interesting interviews, not least, the reminiscences of Ernest Lawton, co-author of the recently published book about the railway, who was a driver at the Bicester Military Railway during the Second World War.

This video is an essential companion to Earnest Lawton's fascinating historical book and is certain to please anyone with an interest in Britain's military railways.

Longtown Military Railway (50-mins) (DVD)

Longtown Military Railway (50-mins) (DVD)

Ref: TR818D

Like our first look at the Bicester Military Railway, this is a unique chance to go 'behind the scenes' in an area that is definitely out of bounds to visitors. The Base Ammunition Depot at Longtown near Carlisle, which is connected to the west coast main line by a lengthy spur that once ran on to the Waverley route, has a very interesting and colourful history. Behind the high security perimeter fences is a very extensive military system that is not normally open to visitors. All internal shunting is carried out by five Vanguard locomotives built by Thomas Hill between 1977 and 1982. Also on the stock list are two Baguley-Drewry railcars built in the 1970s, which are still used to carry personnel around the depot today.

The main Longtown depot is connected to a separate storage site at nearby Smalmstown, by means of a short link over British Rail metals. This involves tracing part of a spur that once linked the Waverley route with the West Coast main line at Gretna and which closed to through traffic 1969. Part of this spur also forms the main rail access route into the Longtown depot, but despite the fact that it only carries MOD traffic, it is still owned and maintained by BR.

As well as current day operations at Longtown, Eastriggs just across the border in Scotland, which also comes under the control of Longtown BAD, is thoroughly explored. In particular, we look at the unusual narrow gauge system and transfer facilities at Eastriggs. Also included are interviews with the Longtown Commandant and other members of the railway operating staff.

The Way We Were Part 1: The 1950s and 1960s (62-mins) ()

The Way We Were Part 1: The 1950s and 1960s (62-mins) ()

Ref: TR756D

As Britain began to emerge from the austerity of the post war years many ordinary people, had for the first time ever, enough spare cash to buy a cine camera. This was still somewhat of a luxury though, as cine film throughout the 1950s and 1960s was, by today's home video standards, very expensive.

Thousands of families began to film their holidays, outings, and those more memorable family occasions. While others also took the opportunity to film more commonplace everyday activities including children playing in the street, local fetes or a visit to town.

Television was not the dominant force it is today, and after the ritual of setting up the projector and screen many happy evenings would be spent watching the results in a darkened room at home.

Carefully and sensitively crafted together by North West Video Productions this first volume, in a unique series, forms a fascinating and lively look back at the 1950s and 60s. This is definitely not the official Britain of the newsreels or commercial cinema, but a warm and poignant account of everyday events filmed by ordinary people - showing what life was really like during the post war years.

This unique programme, made entirely from original cine films complete with discreet sound effects and music, is complimented by a thought provoking script written and introduced by Neil Patrick - Editor of Yours magazine.

You'll find the memories come flooding back as we focus on a huge variety of topics including:-

Children - at school and at play, long before the days of leisure wear and trainers. With so few cars and lorries around children were safe to play in the street, where the only distractions were the milkman and his horse, or the chimes from a distinctive ice cream van.

Street Scenes - lots of contrasting views, from small villages to large towns - highlighting shops, passing traffic and fashions.

Everyday life - including wine making, summer fetes and Christmas - always the main family event in any year but just look at those fashions and the presents.

Transport - lots of everyday scenes including a steam train journey from Leamington Spa to Birmingham, trolley buses at Walsall, and Glasgow's distinctive trams.

Royal Visits - a memorable day with Royal visits to Rugeley & Barmouth.

Holidays - when overseas package holidays were virtually unknown! Lots of nostalgic scenes in the West Country, including camping and caravan holidays, picnics and visits to St Ives, Lands End, and Lynton & Lynmouth. Also holidays on the Isle of Wight featuring the famous pier, and the first road round-a-bout on the Island.

Farming - before giant machines took over most duties there were still some horses and early tractors at work, while the farmyards provided a haven for children to play in.

Family motoring - for the lucky few a new car meant extra freedom - although many early roads were already starting to jam up. Never mind though there was still plenty of room on the newly opened M6 & M1 motorways!

If you are old enough to remember the 1950s and 60s this unique video will rekindle many pleasant memories. If you're too young to remember those exciting years, this programme will give you an excellent impression of just what you missed !

For over a century the freight engine was the everyday work horse of the railways – often expected to slog away with a minimum of maintenance and a heavy load.

This latest title helps to redress the balance by taking a nostalgic look at some of the most enduring freight classes including Great Western 2800s, Robinson 04s, Q6s, J27s, J37s, J38s, J39s and 4Fs.

There’s also atmospheric film of the much loved Somerset & Dorset 2-8-0s and LMS 8Fs, as well as Q1s and WD 2-8-0s. Finally we take a look at the often forgotten industrial tanks and the end of the line; the 9Fs.

Today's railfans may have to travel as far as China or Cuba in search of steam - but not so long ago things were very different.

As far as the majority of rail enthusiasts in the UK were concerned, when English steam finished during August 1968 - their hobby was effectively dead. Few people in those days had the money, time or the knowledge to travel the world in search of steam, and of course many British fans were notoriously blinkered claiming to be "only interested in UK steam anyway".

Fortunately a few railfans had the foresight to record the passing steam railway heritage overseas as well as at home, and it's thanks entirely to their efforts that we can all now enjoy some of the finest lineside action to be seen anywhere in the world. Highlights of this first volume include:

Marchwood & Chilmark Military Railways (50-mins) (DVD)

Marchwood & Chilmark Military Railways (50-mins) (DVD)

Ref: TR827D

On one special tape, TWO complete programmes contrasting the different MOD railway operations at Chilmark, near Salisbury and Marchwood, near Southampton.

RAF Chilmark was a unique ammunition supply depot secretively situated in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside. This video traces the work of this interesting and unique depot during the spring of 1994 when supplies were being transferred to the Nato depot at Glen Douglas in Scotland, prior to the complete closure of Chilmark during 1995. Featured site movements include both standard and narrow gauge locomotives at Chilmark and Dinton as well as the unique narrow gauge railway from the privately owned Chilmark Stone Company Mine situated within the RAF site. As well as pertinent interviews, this programme also features rare archive photographs and one of the unusual underground electric locomotives in operation. The line is connected by a four mile spur from Chilmark to the BR connection at Dinton which utilizes part of the old double track main line from Exeter to Salisbury.

Marchwood MOD base is an extremely busy location that handles the import and export of a vast variety of goods for the MOD. These can range literally from stationery supplies through to tanks. The base which is connected to the main BR line which still runs to Fawley is operated entirely by standard gauge MOD vanguard locomotives. It also includes its own private harbour where goods are loaded onto waiting ships. Very unusually, Marchwood is busy enough to justify its own passenger service, which is featured along with BR movements onto the site.

Passenger Action! Vol.1 - Private Operators (55-mins) ()

Ref: TR787D

By March 31st 1997 the last BR passenger train operating company had been sold and with it came the end of British Rail's passenger operations. This superb programme takes a representative look at the new private companies' operations throughout the British Isles in summer 1997. As well as looking at some of the striking new passenger liveries, this programme also takes a look at press criticism concerning reliabilty and ticketing. With over sixty minutes of solid passenger action featuring many different classes, this new programme is a must for all connoisseurs of the current passenger scene.
