Manchester Ship Cruise (76-mins) (DVD-R)

Manchester Ship Cruise (76-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: RV103D

The Manchester Ship Canal was officially opened by Queen Victoria on 21st.May 1894.

Today, well over 100 years later, the canal is still providing an important link between Manchester and the open sea.

We are sailing the full 36 mile length of the canal, departing from the Liverpool landing stage with the world famous landmarks prominent as we start our journey.

We are on board the Mersey Ferry boat "Royal Iris of Mersey" which normally plies the river daily between Liverpool, Seacombe and Woodside. However, during the summer month, it and its other sister ships such as the "Royal Daffodil" are occasionally commandered to allow people the chance to see a first hand view of this massive engineering feat, one that will never be repeated in the annals of maritime history.

A journey along the Manchester Ship Canal, looking at the features along the way.(also available as a VHS video)

You see them bustling around dock-sides all over the world - Tugs. But the Manchester Ship Canal Tugs are unique, Smaller than the average tug, but still powerful enough to maneuver the large ships along the confines of the Manchester Ship Canal. Not an easy task when, at times, there are only a few feet separating the sides of the ships and the banks of the canal.

One hundred years ago, most of the traffic was through to Manchester, but nowadays, with the motorway networks, the decline in the canal traffic has meant that the majority of the work is between Eastham Lock, which joins the canal to the river Mersey, and either Ellesmere Port or Stanlow Oil Refinery, although there is the occasional ship taken as far as Runcorn Docks, and much more rarely, all the way through to Manchester.

So enjoy a day with us as we ply the canal, waiting for ships to arrive at the canal at Eastham Lock, ready to be taken the few miles along the canal to their destination at Stanlow, returning to Eastham with fully laden ships to allow them to rejoin the Mersey and head for the open sea.
