In the summer of 2003, the Brig-Visp-Zermatt Bahn merged with the Furka Oberalp Bahn to form the Matterhorn- Gotthard-Bahn, MGB. REOS filmed the rack and pinion narrow gauge line in detail during the summer weather. Besides normal scheduled trains, you will also see freight train, the new shuttle trains and the VZ crocodile.

We start in Brig, the centre of the new MGB. The trains are assembled and shunted with great ease. Through Glisergrund we reach the heart of the BVZ, Visp station. We witness many loading and unloading activities. Narrow gauge wagons are unloaded, cable car pillars are loaded and containers change from truck to train. In 2003 there are no signs of the forthcoming changes to Visp.

We follow the track towards the south, filming from familiar and not so familiar locations. We visit; Neubrück, Stalden, Kalpetran, the Kipfenschlucht, St. Niklaus, Mattsand, Herbriggen, Randa, Täsch and terminal station at Zermatt. We visited Zermatt again in 2006 to get a winter prospective of the MGB.

Disentis/Mustér lies in the southern canton of Graubunden. Locos of the Rhätische Bahn(RhB) and the Furka-Oberalp-Bahn(FO) are exchanged in this station, whilst the carriages of the Glacier-Express are shunted. The first part of this film is recorded during beautiful sunny weather in the summer of 1998, just before reconstruction of the station took place. This resulted in the points being manually operated. You could cross the tracks anywhere you wanted and the platforms were short and uneven. Witness shunting of the Glacier-Express and locos of the RhB and FO being exchanged, while the small Tm 2/2 shunting tractor moved carriages to the sidings. Between 1998 and 2000, the station has been under reconstruction. Part two is filmed in January 2001,and shows the "new" station of Disentis/Mustér. The points are remote controlled, you are no longer allowed to cross the tracks and the new platforms are longer and provide shelter from the bad weather.

The recordings of part one, filmed in August 1998, are taken with an analogue camcorder. The recordings in January 2001 are filmed using a digital camera. We only use original sound recordings, without any additional music or commentary. Subtitles provide information about the trains.

In 1882, the Gotthard tunnel was opened. This is one of the most important transit routes from North to South Europe. Wassen lies on the north side of the route towards the tunnel. The climb up to the tunnel entrance, which is a relative short distance, needs a special track layout. A lot of tunnels and several bridges of different make's and varieties, three spiral tunnels and a grade of 2,6%, make the Gotthard route a special railway line. Wassen is situated in the centre of this spectacular route. The Wassen church is famous because the train drives by on three different levels. The trains run through the severe winter condition, despite the dramatic weather change from light snowfall at Gurtnellen, to heavy snowfall in Wassen. Regional trains, Eurocity's and freight trains are passing by. Many freight trains have multiple locos and some even have push locos at the rear. The recordings were made in February and March 2000 with a digital camera and are mastered full digital.

Original sound recordings, without any additional music or commentary. Subtitles provide information of locations and trains.

Sunshine, lots of sunshine! On February the 24th 2003 we took the train from Andermatt to the Oberalp Pass. The climb up has been filmed from the passenger’s point of view. Once up we walk a short distance towards Sedrun to take a closer look into the river Rhine valley. We walked back over the Oberalp, passing the lake and following the line to Nätschen. This film will give you a good impression of the mountains scenery with unforgettable blue skies. Following the BVZ/FO merger, the new company is known as Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. When we filmed, most of the rolling stock still wore the FO "colours".

Kandersteg is known by most people for the car transporter shuffle to Goppenstein. It is also a popular holiday destination in both summer and winter. Kandersteg lies on the BernLötschberg-Simplon (BLS) line, which connects Wallis and Italy to Central Switzerland.

In February 2005, we visited the station after fresh snowfall and clear blue winter skies. Snow clearing takes place as we watch different trains pass through this beautiful sefting.

The passenger trains consist of EW IV push-pull consists powered by SBB Re 460s and Euro-City's trains of Belgian and "Cisalpino" coaching stock, also hauled by Re 460s.

Freight trains are hauled by the BLS or SBB. The connection to Italy and the different loco types guarantee a variety of trains. Helper locos are uncoupled on platform 1. The overhead wire "snaps", and we get a demonstration of how to fix this without delaying the traffic.

We end the film with evening scenes during heavy snowfall.

In February 2005. REOS visited Spiez station during the winter season. Spitz, is a junction station, situated on the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon line (BLS) with branches to Zweisimmen and Interlaken. Nowadays, the BLS only run regional passenger and long distance freight trains. Inter Regios and Euro-City trains are operated by the SBB. Many SBB IC 2000 double deck and EW IV trains are seen using SBB Re 460s for traction.

Spiez locomotive depot plays an important role for BLS Cargo. The steep gradients of the BLS north ramp requires additional locomotives to be added to the front and occasionally, the rear of heavy freight trains crossing the Alps. The BLS, in cooperation with Railion, pool locomotives for this use.

This film shows the variety of Regio, Inter Regio and international passenger trains that pass through Spietz. Freight runs mainly in the evenings and the coupling and uncoupling of locos is filmed amidst winter snow condtions.

Göschenen, at 3300 ft above sea level in Kanton Uri, is situated on the North side of the Gotthard tunnel, which is more than 9 miles long. The Gotthard route is an major transit route between the north and south of Europe. Many trains, freight and passengers, make use of this famous route across the Alps. The grade of 2,6% is especially severe for the freight trains, most of which are doubleheaded. Some even have "helper" locos at the rear which are attached at Erstfeld and decoupled at Göschenen. Freight trains are directed to the sidings to wait for passenger trains to overtake on this busy line. The service to Andermatt is provided by the Furka-Oberalp Bahn through the Schöllenschlucht.

The weather forecast: Heavy snowfall, with possible sunshine at the end of the film. The recordings were made in February and March 2000 with a digital camera and are digitally mastered.
