Along Cheshire Lines (63-mins) (DVD-R)

Along Cheshire Lines (63-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: RF519D

This programme looks in depth at the former Cheshire Lines Railway between Manchester – Stockport – Altrincham – Northwich and Chester. After an introduction the programme is divided into three watchable segments each accompanied with detailed commentary and archive film and photographs.

Cheshire Lines for Cheshire People A celebration of the whole line from Manchester to Chester and the attractions along the way. We look at rolling stock through the years and finally examine the work of the newly created Mid Cheshire Community Rail Partnership that is attracting travellers back to the railway. Cheshire Lines Freight – A look at freight through the years, not surprisingly centred mainly on Northwich.

Features recent developments. Cheshire Lines Specials – By way of a “bonus track” – a look at some of the various special trains and diversions that have visited the Cheshire Lines since 1960, culminating in extended coverage of the May 2004 Steam Shuttles between Chester and Altrincham. The accent here is on lineside action and steam. A handy DVD menu allows the viewer to navigate each chapter or watch the programme in its entirety.

British Diesel Directory Vol.2 - Western Region Diesel Hydraulics (60-mins) (DVD-R)

British Diesel Directory Vol.2 - Western Region Diesel Hydraulics (60-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: RF564D

The birth of the hydraulics was a direct result of the extent to which the former BR regions existed as separate companies even under the overall banner of nationalisation. The firm belief in hydraulic as opposed to electric transmission by the Western Region management gave birth to Warships, Westerns Hymeks and the class 14 O-6-O. These types continued the GWR tradition of distinctive and nonstandard power for some years after the end of steam, before the corporate railway of the late 70s swept them off the mainline.

British Diesel Directory Vol.5 - BR Second Generation Diesels (60-mins) (DVD-R)

British Diesel Directory Vol.5 - BR Second Generation Diesels (60-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: RF626D

The diesel Directory Series looks at the development of British Diesel Rail Traction. Volume Five, filmed and compiled by Railscene's Jeremy English, covers BR Second Generation Diesels. The modernisation of the Great western and East Coast Main Lines required much higher speed trains than could be handled by the existing classes so the High Speed Train (HST) came into being, powered by two class 43 locomotives, one at each end..

The HST instantly became one of Britain's railway's greatest-ever trains and remains in front line service today.

On the freight front new Type 5s were ordered for specific tasks, so classes 56, 58 and 60 came into being. We see them all in this new programme including the "second lives" of 56s and 58s on the Continent of Europe.

British Diesel Directory Vol.6 - General Motors (60-mins) (DVD-R)

British Diesel Directory Vol.6 - General Motors (60-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: RF627D

The Diesel Directory is a series of programmes looking at the development of British Diesel Rail Traction. In the 1980s the independent stone producing company Foster Yeomans ordered a small series of locomotives from General motors of the USA.

Delivered as Class 59 they became progenitors of all the subsequent orders by the privatised railway companies including ARC, National Power, EWS, Freightliner, DRS and GB Railfreight, all of whom bought either more class 59s or the class 66 variant to form the backbone of the British railway freight locomotive fleet in the 21st century.

Freightliner also pioneered a rebuild of the venerable class 57, which also spawned the only modern passenger locomotives, operated by Virgin and First great Western. Finally, EWS bought 30 class 67s for Postal traffic, which have since been seen on many other types of trains. All these classes are included here.

Royal Scot Railtour (60-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: RF565D

Duchess of Hamilton's epic journey Euston-Glasgow-York on the weekend of 30 November - 1 December '96 with footage from the lineside & on board the train.

On the weekend of St. Andrew’s Day 1996, 30 November - 1 December '96, the National Railway Museum’s Flagship locomotive Number 46229 Duchess of Hamilton undertook a marathon London - Glasgow - York weekend railtour, using the last two day's validity of her current mainline certificate. Railfilms’s cameras were both on board and trackside to bring you a comprehensive record of this unique event, as well as a brief look at the history of Coronation Class Pacifics and Number 46229 in particular. This programme gives you the chance to meet those people whose hard work made this journey possible, both on and off the train. Join us on the train, on the footplate, in the diner and of course at the lineside, where our numerous camera teams bring you the best of the action, including the north bound assault on the climb to Shap Summit.

The trip took an enormous amount of effort to organise, and was not without its problems, but overall, the trip was a huge success As Mel Chamberlain of Days Out observes, it was basically a case of organising what many commentators said couldn’t be done!

Mull Steam (48-mins) (DVD-R)

Mull Steam (48-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: RF521D

An introduction to the Isle of Mull its unique steam, scenery and wildlife

MullRail was born out of the need to convey visitors the one and a quarter miles from Craignure Pier to Torosay Castle. To meet this objective a band of undaunted volunteers and rail enthusiasts constructed the railway through rock and bog so creating one of the most unique tourist experiences in the Inner Hebrides.

Here then, in celebration of over 20 years of operation, is the story of how the railway was built and how, with growing visitor numbers, it continues to provide this vital role today.

Meet the railway’s locomotives and in part two take a ride in the cab from Torosay to Craignure!

At Torosay Castle there is the opportunity to experience the world-renowned gardens in full spring majesty. Also savour the traditional atmosphere of a traction engine rally held in the grounds in support of the Mull & Iona Progressive Care Trust. The first event of its type ever held in the Hebrides!

The Isle of Mull offers an experience like no other in terms of scenery and natural beauty and this programme introduces the viewer to the splendours of the Isle. Take a gull’s eye view of the coastline, view wildlife, take a glimpse at Tobermory and more.
