London Pride - 40s Britain

London Pride - 40s Britain

Ref: PN100D

The rarely seen 'London Can Take It', which explains life during the Blitz, was made by the GPO Film Unit for release in the US to help President Poosevelt swing US popular opinion behind Britain in the early days of World War II. It is better known from the version modified for British viewing, 'Britain Can Take It'.

When the war ended, politicians and planners combined forces to re-build the city repairing not only the damage caused by the Luftwaffe, but the inadequacies of the existing infrastructure and local community services on amenities. 'The Proud City' tells the story of the need to replan with the two architects responsible, Sir Patrick Abercrombie and Mr J.H. Forshaw.

'London Airport' is an account of the buildling of Heathrow airport.

'Moving Millions' describes changes taking place in London Transport, both on the ground and on the Underground. Finally, in 'Journey by London Bus', two African students experience the pleasures of trips on Routemaster buses, 'which are always on time'.

Nightmail/West Highland (30-mins) ()

Nightmail/West Highland (30-mins) ()

Ref: PN101D

Night Mail The lasting appeal of Night Mail (1936), celebrating the Postal Special's run from London to Scotland, is that it has all the attributes of the classic British documentary style established by John Grierson. Its realism and lyrical structure is perfectly complemented by W.H. Auden's verse and the music of Benjamin Britten.

West Highland By 1960, the reign of steam on Britain's most scenic railway, the West Highland, was drawing to its close. John Gray, a BBC producer and sound engineer with the GPO Film Unit in the 1930s, made West Highland as his tribute to this wonderful line.
