Blue Pullman (48-mins) (DVD-R

Blue Pullman (48-mins) (DVD-R

Ref: KF121D

Three stunning archive films about the construction, testing and operation of these 1960s luxury trains. As part of the BR Modernisation Plan of the late 1950s it was decided to introduce five diesel-electric train sets for premium business services on the London Midland and Western Regions. Known as the ‘Blue Pullmans’ they were to provide luxurious interiors; the two Midland Pullman sets having first class accommodation only.

Three colour archive films are included in this DVD production, incorporating professionally produced films from the 1960 construction, testing and performance of these leaders in technology. Sadly the units only lasted until 1973, probably mainly due to the extremely bad ride they gave on the Swiss-built bogies, but these films give a wonderful portrayal of developments at the time and are a truly remarkable record.

Derbyshire Mainline (55-mins) (DVD-R)

Derbyshire Mainline (55-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: KF133D

One of Britain's famed routes closed in 1968 and almost sadly forgotten along with the trains that ran over it, it is now spendidly recreated in this new DVD. For the first time, this DVD portrays one of Britain's most scenic railway lines at work, that of the former Midland Main Line through the Peak District of Derbyshire bewteen Derby and Manchester. For just over 100 years the route from Ambergate via Matlock to Chinley and Manchester was a principle main line carrying heavy freight traffic over the long, steep gradients as well as passemger trains linking London St.Pancras with Manchester and Liverpool.

Famous named trains such as "The Palatine" and Midland Pullman graced the scenic splendour of the routes which the Midland Railway promoted heavily. This DVD is the first to comprehensively portray the route and its trains with the viewer being taken on a journey between Derby, Buxton and Chinley with a diverse range of cine material depicting passenger and freight, plus the occassional unusual scene.

Highland Railway Journey in the 1960s (50-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: KF126D

A nostalgic journey from Perth to Inverness, Wick, Thurso and The Kyle of Lochalsh. Filmed during the mid 1960s when the Type 2 diesels were in charge with an occasional ‘Black Five’.

A wonderful journey up the Highland mainline in 1965 from Perth to Inverness, Wick, Thurso and The Kyle of Lochalsh. This DVD is a nostalgic journey up the Highland mainline in 1965. We take the train from Perth station and see the line and its stations up to Inverness, then on to Wick and Thurso, with a trip from Kyle of Lochalsh in an observation car. We also have a rare interlude to Grantown-on-Spey and via Elgin and Forres back to Inverness. By this time Type 2 Sulzer diesels were in charge with an occasional glimpse of a Stanier Class ‘5’ working.

Our film maker, the late E.W. Yardley, was able to spend some considerable time stopping off at various important points to film for us some interesting train movements and architecture of the stations. Altogether, a marvellous record of these lines before the advent of further station closures and reduction in classic highland infrastructure.

The Long Drag (48-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: KF122D

An award-winning documentary made in 1963 about the Settle-Carlisle Railway. Filmed between 1960 and 1963 by Peter Boocock, a keen film maker from West Yorkshire, the film portrays an era on the line when titled trains were still evident and hauled by Peak Class diesels with freight still handled by steam. We see the line before its final run-down and view the stations and the structures with all their fittings. The filming period also includes the severe winter of 1962/3 and brings to reality the harshness of a snow covered Pennine route.

Secrets of Blea Moor & Ribblehead (55-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: KF114D

There is more fascination about the great viaduct at Ribblehead than any other facet on the wonderful Settle-Carlisle Railway; thousands of visitors a year park-up or ride the train to Ribblehead just to view the awe inspiring structure.

This DVD documentary explores the incredible achievement by the engineers and navvies of the mid Victorian period who designed and built the structure at Ribblehead and the legendary tunnel at Blea Moor.

We hear from men who work the desolate signalbox at Blea Moor and from families who lived in the railway houses nearby. We also talk to the 20th century engineers who had the task of renovating the viaduct in the early 1990s which actually resulted in the saving of the whole line. We investigate the remains of the navvy camps and brick works at nearby Batty Green and the spoils of the engineering works on the site.

The Last Weeks of BR Steam

The departure of steam from the British Railways network in August 1968 was a landmark not only in railway history, but British history. For nearly 150 years steam reigned supreme and although gone, it has never been forgotten.

In this unique account of the last poignant weeks of steam, Kingfisher Films has brought together exclusive interviews with the crews of the last steam workings and passengers of the very last train; archive material; and hitherto unseen footage made available by enthusiasts.

This is the first opportunity to share in the delights of the original sound recording of the last journey, recorded by Robert Ormiston-Chant on the 11th August 1968; and artist David Shepherd OBE, recalls the emotional last weeks of steam and describes how he purchased his own two locomotives from BR.

Narrated by Roger Hardingham.
