A celebration of over 20 years in preservation, including a look back at the last years in BR operation. This DVD is a celebration of this one time Southern byway which now forms one of the most popular attractions in Hampshire.

It includes rare steam archive film of the Mid Hants railway from the 1950s and 1960s as well as footage of the final years of DEMU trains until closure in 1973. Film sequences from over twenty year ago show the early years of preservation, including the Mid Hants Railway reopening day of 30th.April 1977.

Britain’s most best-loved railway, with its route over the ‘roof’ of England, is featured in this combined volume. From its very beginnings in the early 1870s, through to its heyday in the early 20th century, we look at this famous line in detail.

Enjoy a journey along the line and see its most magnificent structures, including a detailed look at Ribblehead viaduct with its restoration to enable continued traffic in the early 1990s. We talk to railwaymen about their experiences in steam days and hear from historians about the many accidents on the route in the 1900s. Much of this combined volume uses archive film to show the techniques of signalling and the last through passenger services in the early 1980s.

The huge success of the Settle-Carlisle in recent times has been spurred on by the massive investment in the track and by the renovation of many station buildings. We have footage of all of these factors actually taking place.

The line is seen as a perfect steam locomotive hunting ground and we see many steam excursions in this programme, including a very special freight train run in 2000 using the LMS 8F No. 48151.

One of 38 Coronation Class 4-6-2s built by the LMS under the design of Sir William Stanier. Duchess of Hamilton is very much part of the National Collection now and was brought back into main line use in the 1980s.

In this programme we look at her main line runs starting with her test runs in 1990 following her second major overhaul promoted by The Friends of the National Railway Museum. Featured in this 50-minute profile, are 46229’s runs over the Settle-Carlisle Railway; those over the North Wales route to Holyhead; to Scarborough and into the south of England from Paddington.

We end the profile on Duchess of Hamilton at the museum at York, where she is currently on display for all to see.

Preservation Pioneers brings to the forefront the great achievements of those people and organisations who saved our ever decreasing fleet of locomotives in the late 1950s and early 1960s, from the scrapyard. We meet those involved and hear of the horror stories in their efforts and of the great difficulties in preservation at the time. We see archive footage from the period; before their withdrawal and during their change of ownership.

Locomotives covered in this film include, Nos. 6201 Princess Elizabeth, 34023 Blackmore Vale, 35028 Clan Line, the North Eastern Locomotive Group's fleet, those on the Bluebell Railway and at Didcot. We also hear of the many Black Fives preserved at Carnforth in those dying days of steam and of those in the National Collection, plus many others.

Front cover: LSWR Class 'T9' No. 120 was saved for the nation after withdrawal from normal service in 1962.
