Black Five - Jack of All Trades (80-mins) (DVD-R)

After the grouping of the railway companies into the Big Four in 1923, the LMS found itself in possession of a woefully inadequate and far from standardised fleet of locomotives. Enviable glances were cast towards the GWR where broad standardisation was very much in evidence. WIlliam Stanier was lured away from Swindon and became the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LMS, tasked with designing and introducing a range of locomotives that would satify the needs of the Operating Superintendent.

The class 5 mixed traffic 4-6-0 locomotives, which subsequently became known as Black Fives due to the mixed traffic livery, were the fourth of the new classes to be introduced in 1934. In total 842 were built up until 1951 when the final example was turned out in BR days.
