Plus... a trip on the footplate of the WSR’s newest steam engine, photo charters with “City of Truro” and 1450 working a GWR autotrain, glimpses behind the scenes, “King Edward I” at work on the mainline in the South West... and much more!

Somerset & Dorset - The Legend Lives On (89-mins) (DVD)

Somerset & Dorset - The Legend Lives On (89-mins) (DVD)

Ref: AW107D

The dearly loved Somerset & Dorset Railway formerly ran from Bath Green Park to Bournemouth West, with branches to Burnham-On-Sea, Wells and Bridgwater. All this came to an end in 1966, when the Beeching axe fell on the ‘Swift & Delightful’, and the line was rapidly torn up and demolished. In this programme, we look at how the legend of the Somerset & Dorset lives on to this day.

Amongst the many features on this video are: Colour archive cine film from the last public day of operation in March 1966, and featuring the L.C.G.B. special excursion hauled by Southern Railway Bulleid West Country Class Pacifics "Bude" and "Biggin Hill". Interviews with several ex-S&D staff, which include memories of working on the wide variety of steam locomotives found on the line, and tales from stations on the branch. Preserved steam in action featuring locomotives which once worked on the S&D.

‘Somerset & Dorset - The Legend Lives On’ includes over 25 minutes of material filmed on the WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY, with special features on WSR based S&DJR Class 7F no. 53808 and visiting LMS Class 4F no. 44422. The WSR’s spectacular 1996 ‘S&D Gala’ is included, with Southern Railway West Country Class locos "Boscastle" and "Swanage", along with BR Standard Class 5 no. 73096. Another former ex-S&D locomotive featured is BR Standard Class 9F no. 92212, filmed on its visit to the line in 2002 for the Spring Steam Gala.

Also included are archive photographs, steam on the Gartell Light Railway at Templecombe, the S&D Trust’s museum at Washford, and much, much more.

Ref: AW106D

Released in 2001, "Steam Power on the West Somerset" features a selection of sixteen locomotives which have worked on the line in recent times, including both resident engines and steam gala visitors from other railways around the country.
