BR Steam Scenes of 1961 to 1966 (52-mins) (DVD only)

Ref: AC126D

Following a brief visit to Killin to view the peculiar run-round procedure, we head south to Tebay and Shap were types seen include "Royal Scots", 9Fs, "Princess Coronations" and various Class 5s.

A comprehensive visit to Bromsgrove and the Lickey Incline towards the end of the days of steam banking is followed by sequences at various locations in the Midlands and the programme concludes with scenes of intense activity at Basingstoke.

Beginning in Wales we make journeys from Carmarthen to Aberystwyth, Swansea Victoria to Craven Arms, Three Cocks to Moat Lane and Aberdare to Pontypool, all behind steam power. Wherever we go, we observe abundant evidence that this was still a steam railway with stations and infrastructure largely intact. Moving into England, expresses and local services around Gloucester and Cheltenham are seen before the cuts of the 1960s. A detailed look at the Somerset and Dorset main line is followed by scenes on the delightful Hemyock branch and the programme concludes with views around Lymington and Swanage.

The established author and photographer Hugh Ballantyne is well know for his still photographs of the railway scene but what is less well known is that in the 1960s, he and his wife Toni, also took a considerable quantity of cine film. This programme covers a variety of locations on the Western Region and Southern Region of British Railways between 1962 and 1966 when steam power still featured on many services, including express passenger workings.

Opening on their home territory of the time, the first scenes are on the Somerset and Dorset at Bath Green Park in 1962 when 9F 2-10-0s could be seen on trains such as the "Pines Express". Views along the Somerset & Dorset follow, right up to the closure in 1966. Other routes covered include Barnstaple to Taunton, the Hemyock branch, the Cheddar Valley line, Worcester to Oxford, the Kingham area, the Fairford Branch, Bere Alston to Callington, Reading to Redhill and the Severn Valley Railway at Bridgnorth in 1963.

BR Steam Scenes of 1966 and 1967 (51-mins) (DVD only)

Ref: AC107D

This is the third in a series of programmes featuring the work of Ray Hammond who travelled Britain recording on cine film the final years of BR steam.

This DVD depicts steam on four of the six regions then operating, showing that even at such a late date for steam, a considerable variety could still be seen. The Western Region is visited on the last day at Bath Green Park. On the Southern we find Pacifics still operating among the upheaval of electrification work. A large variety of locos are seen still running on the Wirral, and ex-LMS and BR classes are filmed on the West Coast route at places such as Warrington and Wigan. In the North-East, elderly pregrouping classes were still hard at work around Blyth and Tyne Dock.

Ref: AC108D

This fourth volume of the Ray Hammond Series features steam in action on the Southern, LM and NE Regions during the final full year of BR steam operation (1967). We see the nostalgic finale of steam on the Southern, with well polished Pacifics battling it out to the last day. Over on the London Midland there are some splendid scenes on Shap where a seemingly endless procession of goods, parcels and even express passenger trains were still handled by steam power.

1967 was also the final year of steam working on the North Eastern region and we have some evocative views around Ryhope and on the Silksworth branch as well as scenes during the last days at Leeds Central.

Hugh Ballantyne Slide Shows - 1: LMS 0F to 7P (100-mins) ()

Hugh Ballantyne Slide Shows - 1: LMS 0F to 7P (100-mins) ()

Ref: AC088D

For the first time, one of Hugh Ballantyne's famous slide shows given at venues up and down the country is being offered on DVD. The images are mostly in colour, going back to 1961, supplemented by a small selection of b & w images going back to 1950, over 175 images in all. These are presented in a magnificent slide show of optically-scanned and enhanced pictures with a full informative commentary. The show begins with an overview of all the classes that were to be encompassed in the proposed 1946 LMS locomotive standardisation scheme along with views of many other former LMS and constituent types that continued to work for much of the BR steam era. The next section contains overall views of a number of ex-LMS steam depots and then we take a journey down the West Coast Main Line with superb lineside views at many locations between Euston and the Clyde Valley. This is followed by scenes taken on various other lines that had belonged to the LMS. The DVD concludes with scenes of ex-LMS locos working over "foreign" metals in the UK plus a small number of views depicting LMS-designed 8F 2-8-0s overseas.
