Double Darjeeling Delights

The World's Most Famous Narrow Gauge Mountain Railway

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is over 124 years ols and one of the world's very first narrow gauge mountain railways. In 1999 it became the second railway in the world to be listed by UNESCO as a Wold Heritage site. 50 miles (80km) long, it climbs through spectacular scenery to a summit of 7407 feet at Ghum, near Darjeeling. This DVD follows the "toy" train from near Siliguri, on the plains, to Darjeeling and back. It included the famous loops and zig-zags, crosses at the stations (some of them unusual), a loco with a broken steam pipe and lots of daily running. It was filmed in 1977 when the line was entirely steam worked.

This DVD contains the full content of the previously issued VHS production PLUS 62 minutes of previously unreleased material.

Chemin de fer de La Mure (55-mins) (DVD-R)

Chemin de fer de La Mure (55-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: CM107D

Heavy electric action in the French Alps.

The CF de la Mure is metre gauge and electrified at 2400v DC. Built in 1888 as a coal line, it switched to tourism for its main traffic when the mines closed in 1998. The line runs from St.Georges de Commiers, 20km south of Grenoble in southern France, to La Mure in the foothills of the French Alps.

The line traverses the spectacular gorge of the river Deac on ledges, viaducts, bridges and tunnels high above the water. These are seen in footage from across the gorge and on the train. Numerous sharp curves and tunnels punctuate the route. At Louila, the line traverses two adjacent viaducts, one above the other and parallel to it. Abamdoned coal mines can be seen at La Motte d'Availlans (where there is a mining museum) and around La Villaret. The original (and present) terminus at La Mure is situated in pleasant Alpine scenery. An uprofitable 31km extension to Corps, opened in 1932, was closed in 1949; a further 48km extension to Gap was never completed.

Pichi Richi and the North Australian Dream (120-mins) (DVD-R)

Pichi Richi and the North Australian Dream (120-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: CM106D

The 40 km of line through the PichiRichi Pass are the remains of the grandiose dreams of South Australia's 19tn Century politicians. A North-South transcontinental railway was to make South Australia the dominant State, straddling key communication lines to Asia and Europe, But the Great Northern Railway was diverted through difficult country to serve local, marginal farmers. The line was too costly, and was never completed. New standard gauge lines to Leigh Creek and Darwin (viaTarcoola) now bypass it totally.

This DVD shows operations through the Pichi Richi Pass from Quorn to Port Augusta. Locomotives seen are two ex-Western Australia "W" class 4-8-2s, Silverlon Tramway No. 22, South Australian Railways "T" class 4-8-0 No. 186, and ex-Commonwealth Railways NM 4-8-0 No.25. The "Coffee Pot" steam railmotor has a segment to itself, as does Brill railmotor 106 (the "Barwell Bull") working from Quorn to Port Augusta.

The Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society, formed In 1973, now runs regular trains from Quorn to Port Augusta, For membership, timetables, or other information, write to: PRRP5, Railway Station, Railway Terrace, Quorn, SA 5433. Recorded information: {08} 8395 2566. Website: www.prr.org.au; E-mail: bookings@prr.org.au.

This video is all-digital. It was shot with 3-CCD digital video cameras in October 1999 and October 2005. It has been digitaily edited and transferred direct lo DVD. Sound is all natural, captured on site at the lime of filming. No music or voice-over disturbs the action segments. A spoken introduction tells the PRR's story, both in service and in preservatiion, using maps and stills. Further maps and titles locate the action; more information is on the printed insert in Ihe box and the .pdf file on the disk.

Melbourne's Tramways (110-mins) (DVD-R)

Melbourne's Tramways (110-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: CM104D

Melbourne's tramway is the largest in the southern hemisphere and eleventh largest in the world. A fleet of over 400 cars operates over some 250 route km. (160 route miles). Conventional street trackage predominates, but there are stretches of central reservation and reserved tracks. Two light rail lines use conventional former heavy rail trackage.

After a period of stagation in the 1960s, new trams arrived in 1975, and major extensions, to Burwood, Bundoora, and Box Hill have been built.

This DVD video shows older W class trains on the City Circle service, plus the Z classes of the 1970s with ASEA and Duwag equipment; the A and R classes of the 1980s, and recently-delivered Citadis and Siemens low-floor stock. Unusual and interesting features of the system, such as "tramway squares" and the converted "light rail" lines, are shown.

ALL DIGITAL - ALL NATURAL SOUND

This DVD was filmed in 2000, 2003 and 2004 using 3-CCD Mini-DV cameras. All editing and processing has been digital. The 16-bit sound was recorded on location using professional-quality microphones. There is no background music, and the extensive narration is confined to the maps and stills so that the sound of the trams at work is unmarred.

Swiss Rack Steam: The Brienz Rothorn Bahn and the Furka Bergstrecke

Ref: CM099D

Swiss Rack Steam

The Brienz Rothorn Bahn and the Furka Bergstrecke

Switzerland has two rack lines which are predominantly steam operated. The Brienz Rothorn Bahn, to 800mm gauge, opened in 1892, is a commercial enterprise operating the world's most modern steam locomotives. The Furka Bergstrecke (Furka Mountain Section) AG is a preservation society running steam trains over the most mountainous section of the metre gauge Furka Oberalp Bahn closed after completion of the 15.4km Furka Basistunnel in 1992.

Both lines use the double Abt rack and traverse spectacular countryside. The 7.596km (4 3/4 miles) of the BRB are graded at 1 in 4, climbing 1678m (5505 feet) to the summit of the Rothorn, the tallest mountain in the vicinity, at 2350 metres (7710 feet). The Furka line, route of the Famous Glacier Express, has a ruling grade of 1 in 8. and some adhesion sections. Of the 17.7km between Oberwald and Realp, 12.9km. from Realp to Gletsch, have been reopened. The 2-6-0 locomotives, repatriated from Vietname, cross the famous Steffenbach bridge, which is folded away during the annual winter closure.

This DVD was filmed in 2003 and 2005 using 3-CCD Mini-DV cameras. All editing and processing has beenn digital, The 16-bit sound was recorded on location using professional-quality microphones.
