This programme is truly unique. We take you back to 1971 to experience a cab ride along the former Midland Railway from St.Pancras to Market Harborough.
Originally the professionally filmed footage was taken for use in an Advanced Passenger Train (APT) driving simulator but was never actually used. At the time of the cab ride a whole fleet of now long vanished locos worked the Midland Main Line services. You see countless Class 45s rushing past on expresses, the slightly less powerful Class 44s on freight and Classes 20, 25, 31 and 47 provide the supporting cast.
There are old semaphores, long forgotten loops & branches, and stations years away from modernisation. In addition to the extensive cab footage, lineside material from the period is also included plus a view from the 1990s at a few select locations. NOW ON DVD

This cab ride was recorded aboard an HST, power car no. 43 054, on the 10:20 St.Pancras to Sheffield on 28th.May 1986. The train was semi-fast an dthe preceeding 10:15 to Nottingham was running with only one power car, thus delaying the 10:20. Despite this the train recovered all lost time and arrived at Sheffield on time.
Our driver was Roger Hague and the traction inspector, Alan Newman.
Note: there is no commentary other than cab conversations which are not always audible above locomotive sounds.

London St.Pancras to Sheffield
Filmed from the cab of a High Speed Train, St Pancras station was filmed just before the overhead wires were taken down prior to the rebuilding of the terminus to handle channel tunnel trains in 2007. The famous gasometers have also since been removed.
The first 50 miles of the Midland main line are under the wires of Thameslink as far as Bedford. Stations passed include Elstree, St Albans and Luton.Then Sharnbrook, Desborough and Kibworth summits follow in quick succession, these banks infamous in steam days. Nowadays the first stop is Leicester - a distance of 100 miles!
A change of scene as we head north from Derby through the delightful Peak district stopping at Chesterfield and terminating at Sheffield.
As usual, numerous trackside shots show the train tearing past the camera with stereo sound to match.

Cab Ride 35: Coalville-Calverton via Nottm Jun '90 (130-mins) (DVD-R)

This is a very special cab ride, for two reasons. Firstly, it covers three freight-only lines in the Midlands, the Leicester to Burton-on-Trent line, from Coalville (at the middle of the line) to Burton-on-Trent, then from Stenson Junction to Sheet Stores Junction (via Castle Donnington) and from Radford Junction to Calverton Colliery. Of course, the main lines are also covered.
Secondly, this is special because it took place on the occasion of the 1990 Coalville Open Day and was organised through the kind offices of Hertfordshire Railtours, who ran the special train as the Coalville Caboodle, on Sunday 6th June 1990.
We travelled aboard 56078 and 58070 (from Nottingham) with drivers Pett, Simkins and Fisher and were accompanied by Inspectors Brian Clark and Phil Greaves.
