This two-DVD set is the first of a series of films using historic instruction films made by the British Transport Films in the 1950s. This is the material with which railwaymen were trained over fifty years ago, in the use and maintenance of the equipment of the day, and which is still in use on parts of Network Rail, and most standard gauge heritage railways. The training films are supplemented, as an historical bonus, by other films including some from BTF and others from elsewhere in the railway industry. On DVD 1, the historical bonus is Right Down the Line, made by Gateway Films for STC in 1962 to record the work undertaken on the electrification of the lines into Fenchurch Street. On DVD 2, there is first a short, silent film made by the photographic unit of the NE Region to show the newly mechanised level crossing gates at Walton Street, Hull. This is followed by Safety on the Track, made by BTF for London Transport in 1951, and filmed in the Finchley Road, Northfields and Neasden areas. This is the third in a series of films, using historic instruction films made by the world famous British Transport Films in the 1950s. This is the material with which railwaymen were trained over fifty years ago in the use and maintenance of the equipment of the day, and which is still in use on parts of Network Rail and most standard gauge heritage railways. The films are supplemented, as a historical bonus, by other films in the Fastline Collection. On DVD 1, the historical bonus is MFD Re-Railing Equipment, made by BTF in 1956 to record the opportunities given by this new equipment for re-railing stock and locomotives. Training and live examples are given. On DVD 2, the historical bonus is Mechanised Renewal of Plain Line, made by BTF in 1956, and filmed on the Western Region to show renewals as then undertaken on the Western Region. It was shot at Brimscombe near Stroud, showing the planning of the job, and the use of twin-jib cranes. DVD 1 Layout of Rodding and Connections, 1954, 15 minutes.
