Grand Central Cab Ride: London to Sunderland (204-mins) (DVD-R)

Grand Central Cab Ride: London to Sunderland (204-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: GU225D

Jump into the cab of one of Grand central's Valenta-powered HSTs and experience the driver's eye view of the route between London and Sunderland.

In the Autumn of 2008, this extraordinary rail journey was filmed onboard the 11:37 Kings Cross to Sunderland calling at York, Thirsk, Northallerton, Eaglescliffe, Hartlepool and Sunderland. We see the many different landscapes and speeds along the way. From the suburbs of London, through the open fens of Cambridgeshire to the Durham coast.

The train is formed of two Class 43 power cars and five MkIII coaches (1xFirst Class, 1xRestaurant/Buffet and 3 standard class trailers.. mostly converted former ex-WCML loco hauled stock). Grand Central operates three HSTs along this route which allows for four trains in each direction per day.

Pure engine room sounds are retained throughout to enhance the experience, whilst on-screen graphics point out features of interest along the route.

Still one of Britain's premier expresses, The Flying Scotsman completes the 393 miles from King's Cross to Edinburgh in just over four hours - an average speed of 94.3 miles an hour! Highlights: Part One includes the exit from King's Cross with the various tunnels, the infamous Welwyn bottleneck, which brings the ECML down to just two tracks, the Newark flat crossing, (the last in the UK) the Selby new line, and Stoke bank, where "Mallard" achieved the world speed record for steam traction. We even take a look inside the A4 engine now housed within the National Railway Museum at York. Part Two covers the second leg from York to Edinburgh calling only at Newcastle. Highlights include: Darlington Bank Top avoiding line, the approach to Newcastle - crossing the mighty River Tyne, the notorious curve at Morpeth, the Royal Border Bridge at Berwick, the scenic coastal sections and the approach to Edinburgh Waverley. NB: Newcastle/Edinburgh section reduced by 40% for time reasons (No features lost).

Cab Ride 07: King's Cross - York Sep '86 (180-mins) (DVD-R)

Cab Ride 07: King's Cross - York Sep '86 (180-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: RS649D

This cab ride was recorded from the cab of Class 47 47517 "Andrew Carnegie" of Inverness Shed on 23rd.September 1985 on the 15:35 from King's Cross to York.

The train was the only locomotive hauled passenger train scheduled in the 1985-86 East Coast Main Line timetables and it ceased on 28th.September 1985. The journey is particularly poignant as it shows the progess being made on the electrification of the line at the time. Very few wires and masts were in place so this Cab Ride has quite unobstructed views of the infrastructure. As we pass through Peterborough we see the depot handling electrification works.

We thank Traction Inspector: J Matron. Drivers: H Coultish (Doncaster), D.Austin (Doncaster) and Guard D.Hodson and the crews concerned for their help and informative commentary on route.

Note: there is no commentary other than cab conversations which are not always audible above locomotive sounds.
