Cab Ride 04: Exeter - Plymouth Apr '85 (60-mins) (DVD-R)

Cab Ride 04: Exeter - Plymouth Apr '85 (60-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: RS646D

Recorded from the cab of Class 50 No. 50 022 on 16th.April 1985 on the 09:25 Paddington to Penzance train from Exeter St.Davids to Plymouth.

At the time of the run, Exeter St.Davids was in the process of being resignalled. The East end works had been completed some ten weeks previously and during the preceding weekend the West end semaphore signals had been stripped of their arms. The replacement colour light signals were operative but the track layout they were to control had not alltered. Flagmen were used to control traffic movements and we departed past a red signal.

The train was booked to depart Exeter at 12:22 and arrive at Plymouth at 13:29. However, the 06:28 HST from Bradford was running late and it was arranged for us to stop at Newton Abbott to make a connection with this train. Our Plymouth arrival was at 13:40.

Please note: There is no commentary other the cab conversations which are not always audible above the sound of the train.

Cab Ride 07: King's Cross - York Sep '86 (180-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: RS649D

This cab ride was recorded from the cab of Class 47 47517 "Andrew Carnegie" of Inverness Shed on 23rd.September 1985 on the 15:35 from King's Cross to York.

The train was the only locomotive hauled passenger train scheduled in the 1985-86 East Coast Main Line timetables and it ceased on 28th.September 1985. The journey is particularly poignant as it shows the progess being made on the electrification of the line at the time. Very few wires and masts were in place so this Cab Ride has quite unobstructed views of the infrastructure. As we pass through Peterborough we see the depot handling electrification works.

We thank Traction Inspector: J Matron. Drivers: H Coultish (Doncaster), D.Austin (Doncaster) and Guard D.Hodson and the crews concerned for their help and informative commentary on route.

Note: there is no commentary other than cab conversations which are not always audible above locomotive sounds.

Cab Ride 19: Inverness - Aberdeen Aug '88 (122-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: RS660D

This Cab Ride was recorded on 3rd August 1988 on the 09:05 train from Aberdeen to Inverness, aboard 47515 "Night Mail" (allocated to Old Oak Common!). The weather was reasonable, with rain affecting the run only briefly, at the end of the double line section. The route is that of the Great North of Scotland Railway as far as Keith, and the Highland Railway from there to Inverness. Many fascinating semaphore signals remained, but these were soon going as part of the Inverness re-signalling scheme, and the loco-hauled trains were to be replaced by Sprinters.

We are indebted to Scottish Region Public Affairs, and especially Bob Docherty, for arranging this cab ride, and to Driver Bob Simpson and Inspector Duncan Lachlen for their hospitality and anecdotes. The timetable for the run was as follows:

  • ABERDEEN ....09.05

  • Dyce ....09.14

  • Inverurie ....09.26

  • Insch ... 09.39

  • Huntly ....09.55

  • Elgin ....10.34

  • Forres ....10.48

  • Nairn ....11.00

  • INVERNESS arr.11.20

The route, was made famous on film as the "London to Brighton in 4 minutes" route, but this is not a repeat of that! Firstly, the direction of travel is the reverse of that run, (this is northwards), secondly it is at normal speed, and thirdly of course, it shows the railway of 1990. It therefore makes a fascinating contrast to the 1950s film. The route takes us through the South Downs and along one of the most intensive railway "corridors" of them all, with numerous junctions right from the start at Brighton. Lines to Lewis and Worthing, from Lewis, Horsham, Guildford, Oxted, Sutton and many other points mean there is tremendous variety on this line, making it one of the most varied cab rides yet. The weather was kind to us, for once, with no rain, giving a very clear view of the line. We would like to thank Southern Region Public Affairs office for arranging this journey.

The Schedule was (Table 186 in BR Passenger Timetable).

This cab ride was recorded on 5th.April 1990 aboard Class 107 No.107 747 from Glasgow to Edinburgh and a DBSO on the 12:33 from Glasgow Central and 14:30 from Edinburgh respectively.

These two routes show the contrasting nature of BRs main and secondary lines, the Glasgow Central to Edinburgh line via Shotts being a secondary one with basic stations and a DMU service whilst the Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street route via Linlithgow is a main line on which "Scot Rail Express" services operate. At the time of this cab ride, these latter were still operated by Class 47/7s in push-pull mode

This Cab Ride was recorded on Thursday 19th April 1990 and this schedule was Table 66 in BR’s Passenger Timetable.

Our Euston to Liverpool Cab Ride is the most popular in the series. This ‘ride’ is over the other parts of the WCML, the Northampton loop and the original Grand Junction line from Rugby to Birmingham. Not only does it compliment the main line run, but once again we have the knowledgeable accompaniment of the Traction Inspector Peter Crawley from Euston.

We travelled aboard Class 321 Unit No. 312 406 on the 09.52 from Euston, commencing at Wolverton, the last station before the Northampton loop leaves the main line.

Please note there is no commentary other than cab conversations which are not always audible above locomotive sounds.

Ref: RS673D

This cab ride over the Great Western Main Line was recorded aboard HST power-car 43179 on 23rd May 1990 on the 08.45 from Paddington. The route needs no introduction, it’s Brunel’s famous 'billiard table' ride, superbly engineered for today’s high speed trains.

Our journey was accomplished exactly to time, except for 18 minutes loss due to signals near Tilehurst, an example of how safety comes first, as a trackman had heard a noise coming from one of the coaches (later identified as a normal suspension ‘groan’) at the station, causing the train to be stopped for static and rolling exams.

We would like to thank all those involved for arranging this cab ride: BR Public Affairs at Swindon, Inspector John Barratt, Driver S. Bailey and D. Stanner.

Please note there is no commentary other than cab conversations which are not always audible above the sounds of the train.

The 'CROSS CITY' LINE in Birmingham is something of a 'cause celebre' and has shown remarkable growth in recent years. In 1990 it was announced that it would be electrified, the first extension to Birmingham's electrification network since the 1960's.

The cab ride was filmed PRE-ELECTRIFICATION on the 21st May 1990 aboard class 116 D.M.U. No 53116 from Tyseley depot. The train was the 9.53 from Redditch, which ran to Barnt Green on the Midland Mainline from Bristol (via the Lickey incline), to Birminghan New Street to Lichfield T.V. High Level.

The journey was arranged by Midland Region Public Affairs, to whom we extend our thanks, also to Steve Young, Inspector Brian Clarke and driver Craig Thompson and John Martin.

This Cab Ride was undertaken in the Spring of 1990 to record the last few weeks of operation of the venerable "Hampshire" DEMU’s on what are now the "Solent" electrified lines of Network South East. At the time of our ride, 30th April 1990, most of the third rails were in position and the new station at Hedge End was complete. All services were still in the hands of the DEMU’s, our unit being No. 205029.

Cab Ride 35: Coalville-Calverton via Nottm Jun '90 (130-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: RS676D

This is a very special cab ride, for two reasons. Firstly, it covers three freight-only lines in the Midlands, the Leicester to Burton-on-Trent line, from Coalville (at the middle of the line) to Burton-on-Trent, then from Stenson Junction to Sheet Stores Junction (via Castle Donnington) and from Radford Junction to Calverton Colliery. Of course, the main lines are also covered.

Secondly, this is special because it took place on the occasion of the 1990 Coalville Open Day and was organised through the kind offices of Hertfordshire Railtours, who ran the special train as the Coalville Caboodle, on Sunday 6th June 1990.

We travelled aboard 56078 and 58070 (from Nottingham) with drivers Pett, Simkins and Fisher and were accompanied by Inspectors Brian Clark and Phil Greaves.

Our thanks are due to BR Midland Region Public Affairs (Steve Young) and John Farrow of Hertfordshire Railtours for arranging this cab ride.

On 3rd October 1990 we filmed aboard the 31469 from Manchester Victoria to Barrow-in-Furness, one of the last provincial hauled routes. Traditional semaphore signals remain in use after we diverge from the West Coast Mainline at Carnforth and traverse the southern section of the Cumbrian Coast.

Barrow driver Ricky Alien, Traction Inspection Walter Wood and BR Midland Public Relations Officer Steve Young accompany us on the 10.48 departure. The train operates limited stops to Preston then all stations to Barrow except Dalton and Roose.

The cab ride compliments Cab Ride No. 40 which covers Barrow-in-Furness to Carlisle later the same day.

Barrow to Carlisle via the Cumbrian Coast. Part two of our 3rd.October 1990 Cab Ride covers the northern section of one of the prettiest provincial routes in the country. The 85 mile stretch of this line features 24 intermediate stations although only 5 are booked stops.

The Cab Ride was filmed aboard a Heaton based Class 108 Derby Lightweight Unit (Nos.53958 and 54227). These DMUs were specific motive power for this route and feature bars on the windows to prevent passengers from leaning out on the limited clearance northern section. The industrial scenes of Workington contrast with the beauty of the Braystone section of coastline.

Cab Ride 41: Bury-Manchester (return) Sept '90 (85-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: RS719D

This is a compilation of the ever changing lines into Bury (Lancashire). We start with a BR cab ride from the town’s inter-change station into Victoria and return. We filmed these outward from Victoria but have reversed the order to help continuity. From Bury we continue north to Ramsbottom and then to Rawtenstall, this is of course on the preserved East Lancashire Railway, the northern extension from Ramsbottom is yet to re-open to the public.

Part One - 09.45 Bury to Manchester Victoria

Calling at Bury, Radcliffe, Whitefield, Besses-o’-th’-Barn, Prestwich, Heaton Park, Bowker Vale, Crumpsall, Woodlands Road and Manchester-Victoria. On the 20th September 1990 Driver John Deluther, Inspector Walter Wood and Public Relations Officer Steve Young are on train, our traction is Class 504 EMU 504 458 arranging in Victoria at 10.08.

Part Two - 09.00 Manchester Victoria to Bury

The reverse of Part One aboard the same unit but with Driver Peter Kingston at the controls. This line is of course to be swallowed up by the controversial light rapid system for Manchester, Victoria station has already been cannibalised to let ’Trains’ turn sharp left into the city’s streets and onto Altrincham line. From May 1991 through trains will be curtailed and many of the unique class 504 side pick up third rail EMU’s will go for scrap.

Part Three - Bury (Bolton Street to Ramsbottom)

On the preserved East Lancashire Railway, calling at Summerseat, the only intermediate station, during the diesel gala on the 7 October 1990. We view our traction Green Class 40 D335 owned by the Class Forty Preservation Society before hopping aboard. The locos controls are also explained briefly at Summerseat.

Part Four - Ramsbottom to Rawtenstall West

Filmed to assist driver training on the yet to re-opened northern extension of the East Lancashire Railway in the unique Battery Electric Multiple Unit (BEMU) Gemini. Please note: No Railscene ‘crew’ were allowed on board, the conversation is only between ELR volunteers.

Please note there is no commentary other than cab conversations which are not always audible above the sounds of the train.

South Wales has always been the Great Western's "other" main destination after Bristol, so here at last is a Cab Ride to compliment Cab Ride 32 Paddington to Bristol.

We ride eastwards, starting at the former Swansea High Street Station, past Landore depot and along the famous coastal industrial heart of Wales - once the home of many local colliery lines. Today the railway still serves the massive steelworks and manufacturing plants and we see all this from the cab. We've visites the Cardiff area before, but this time we travel in the opposite direction and see the changes, especially at Severn Tunnel Junction. From Bristol Parkway we tak ethe latest direct or "Badminton" route the only 125mph part of our journey.

We filmed this cab ride on 1st.February 1991 from the cab of HST power car Class 43, 43 032. We were accompanied by Western Region's Chief Traction Inspector, John Barret and our drivers were W.Larcomb and T.Howell.

The Scottish line from the extreme South-West of the country to the Banks of the Clyde is full of contrasts - from the lonely moorland to the busy suburbs. This cab ride takes us over the route from Stranraer Harbour (the port of embarkation for many travellors to Ireland) through Ayr to Glasgow Central on the former Glasgow & South Western Railway line.

We travel aboard Sprinter uniut No. 156 434 on 22nd.May 1991 on the 14:32 to Glasgow.

The former North British Railway’s East Coast Main Line route north of Edinburgh is a very celebrated line as it crosses two of Scotland’s greatest river estuaries, the Forth and the Tay. The two enormous bridges which span the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Tay are amongst the most famous in the world and this Cab Ride enables you to see them just as the driver does, from the locomotive cab.

Our route takes us from north of the Tay to south of the Forth on the main line through Fife. A part of this route remains controlled by semaphore signalling and its continual twisting and turning, with numerous reverse curves along the Fife coast, makes it one of the most fascinating of our runs.

We travelled in the cab of 158717 on the 15.23 from Aberdeen on the 23rd August 1992, our Driver being Jim Crammond from Perth and our Inspector Scott Ferguson from Edinburgh.

Cab Ride 45/55: Plymouth - Gloucester Oct '92 (120-mins) (2xDVD-R)

Ref: RS746D

Plymouth to Bristol - The former Great Western Main Line to the West Country is one of the most famous railway routes of all - for many people throughout this century it has been the route that took them on holiday and its famous landmarks of Dartmoor and the sea wall at Dawlish and Teignmouth epitomise that feeling. The legacy of Brunel's "Atmospheric Railway" over the hills of South Devon is a line full of character, with fierce gradients and sinuous curves. The South Devon connected with the Bristol and Exeter Railway at Exeter and the latters' straight and level run through Somerset is a strong contrast. This cab ride enables you to view these two railways as they were in 1992 - just as the driver saw it!

We travelled aboard an HST set as the 13.04 working from Plymouth which runs via Birmingham and Derby to York. Our driver was A. Ricketts and InterCity Great Western's Chief Traction Inspector John Barrett rode with us. We filmed from Power Car 43178 on 1 2th October 1992.

Bristol-Temple Meads to Gloucester - This cab ride takes us from the former Great Western station at Bristol-Temple Meads up the severe climb to Filton Junction and Bristol-Parkway. From here we go to the modern Westerleigh Junction where a spur enables us to join the former Midland Railway's Birmingham main line at Yate, up which we travel as far as Gloucester.

We filmed from the cab of HST Power Car No. 43178, accompanied by the Western Region's Chief Traction Inspector John Barrett. Our thanks are due to Inter City Great Western for organising this ride, which was the 13.04 from Plymouth to York train, reversing at Gloucester.

This Cab Ride was recorded on the 19th April 1990 aboard Class 150/1 "Sprinter" Unit No. 150 131 on the 13.06 Chester to Birmingham New Street via Shrewsbury.

The weather was fine for the major part of the journey, with the exception of a little rain on the outskirts of Shrewsbury. However, immediately after Shrewsbury the heavens opened, so this programme has been restricted to that part of the route from Chester to Shrewsbury only.

At the time the line had only been partially rationalised and signals and sidings remained at Weston Rhyn, Baschurch and Haughton. We pass a plain blue painted DMU as well as the Chirk Speedlink with timber, quite nostalgic!

Our thanks are due to the Inspector and locomotive crews involved.

This cab ride was recorded on 12th.July 1993 aboard the 09:25 service from Glasgow (Queen Street) to Aberdeen, one of Scotland's "Express" services over the route of the old North British Railway and Caledonian Railway's line between the two principle Scottish commmercia centres.

The train ran to time, other than a short hold up by adverse signals at Cowlairs. The route taken was the North British Glasgow to Edinburg line to Greenhill and the Caledonian line from there through Larbert, Stirling and Gleneagles to Perth. From Greenill to Hilton Junction (just outside Perth) theline is controlled by semaphore signalling.

We travelled aboard the prototype unit of the Class 158 "Express" Sprinter No. 158701.

Our Traction Inspector was Peter Walker, formerly of Eastfield Depot (now closed), which we pass as we leave Glasgow.

Ref: RS762D

Glasgow to Crianlarich - The former West Highland Railway celebrated its centenary in 1994 and this cab ride takes us along the southern end of the route from Glasgow Queen Street to Crianlarich.

We travel on the 08:10 Glasgow Queen Street and our journey aboard a Class 156 Sprinter takes us through the outskirts of Glasgow, through Strathclyde PTE sponsored stations to Maryhill. The line travels alongside the River Clyde for some distance before branching off at Craigendoran Junction to head for Helenburgh, where the Radio Electronic Token Block signalling system comes into operaition.

From Helensburgh, the line climbs into the hills above Gareloch. The MoD sidings at Glen Douglas are passed next before we enter Arrochar & Tarbert station. At Alui station we cross with a southbound train from Oban and Fort William. Finally we arrive at Crianlarich where the line divides and out journey ends.

Crianlarich to Oban & Return On this cab ride the weather was not all that could be desired for a trip through this wonderful part of Scotland. The windscreen wipers were almost continually in use during the journey, with some breaks in the weather. This journey was aboard a Class 156 Sprinter on 9th.February 1994. Our driver was Dave Shannon and our Driving Inspector Charlie Gibbs.

Great Quality  This is by far one of the best cab ride video's I have watched. The picture quality is outstanding and the Yorkshire countryside is spectacular to see in this. If you're a fan of the NYMR there's a glance of it during the 'ride'.   Andrew Berry - Ipswich
