Ticket to Ride - IC Cabride+ Bodensee Konstanz to Villingen (??-mins) ()

Ticket to Ride - IC Cabride+ Bodensee Konstanz to Villingen (??-mins) ()

Ref: FH177D

Join us for an unforgettable journey from the driver's cab of IC2370 BODENSEE on her journey from Konstanz through the Schwarzwald. We start with a look around the lovely holiday area along the lake and a chance to watch the steamers arrive from Switzerland, and trains on their way to Switzerland. The locomotive on our train is a modern class 101, the mainstay of the DB Fernverkher fleet. The run to Singen is along the busy lakeside line through Radolfzell, while Singen itself is a busy commercial centre with a thriving rail terminal and rail linked lineside industry. We have a quick look arround and after an ICT on a run from Zurich to Stuttgart has cleared the line we head into the foothills of the Schwarzwald and begin to climb! On the way to Villingen we pass through Immendingen and Donaueschingen the town at the source of the mighty Danube.

Ticket to Ride - Out & About Amsterdam (105-mins) ()

Ticket to Ride - Out & About Amsterdam (105-mins) ()

Ref: FH171D

Amsterdam- the capital city of the Netherlands, though not the administrative capital as that privilege lies with Den Haag, is home to more than half a million people - one million with its satellites. Getting there is easy! You can travel by rail from the UK through the Channel Tunnel and then Brussels, or from Germany in an ICE3 train that runs along the NBS from Frankfurt to Cologne and on to Amsterdam. There is also a connection with Berlin that enters the Netherlands at Bad Bentheim. Most visitors from the UK will arrive by air, we show you Schiphol and how to get down town. We walk you through the public transport systems: trams, ferries and canal boats, and visit the GVB offices at Central Station as it’s the best place to buy your tickets and passes. So now you are ready! The old city has been built on a pattern of concentric semi circles, the houses standing on piles that penetrate the swampy mud to reach the firm sands below.. The city is cut by canals, that are in turn crossed by more than 200 bridges giving the city its special character. Your Ticket to Ride.. team takes you round some principal sights: the Museum Quarter, the Heineken Experience, where we ARE bottles of that fine pale lager travelling through the brewery!, then onto NEMO – the technology centre. We take some day trips: by rail to Hoorn - perhaps the prettiest town in the country - where we make the classic triangular run: steam tram across the marshes to Medemblik, transfer to the MV Friesland for an hour’s sail across the Ijsselmeer to Enkhuizen - where we see a black smith still at work!, and thence back by train to Hoorn and Amsterdam courtesy of the NS, to Utrecht to visit the recently re-opened National Railway Museum, to Den Haag by train - now for many the classic architecture of Den Haag HS station would suffice, but we have a trip to Madurodam - Holland in miniature - in mind! It’s a tram ride of twenty minutes, and after our visit to the miniature wonderland, five minutes more to the seaside at Scheveningen, where you can take the air and lose your money at the casino! The return trip is along the interurban tramway to Delft where we watch genuine Delftware being made and painted. We return home via the world famous bulb fields near Haarlem.

Ticket to Ride - Between the Lines Spring 2006 (??-mins) ()

Ref: FH100D

Welcome to Between the Lines- a new video magazine for European rail and model rail enthusiasts. Each quarter will see a main feature plus supporting articles covering areas of railway and model railway interest in Europe, and occasionally further afield.

In BTL 1 for our principal feature we visit: Germany in very early 2006. with snow on the ground we follow Die Bahn going about its daily business from Cologne in the north, lots of freight near Troisdorf, down the Rhein Main NBS to Limburg, up to Gießen then down to Würzburg, Treuchtlingen and Nürnberg.

Supporting features are:

Freight around Kledering in Austria- one of the great gathering points for trains to and from the old east, the RMT- the iconic steam tram that runs across the dunes south west of Rotterdam, and on our visit a must for those with an interest in military vehicles on rail, Zaragoza in Spain- a look at the city and the pre AVE railway, complete with a Talgo cab ride!

Finally Rolf Fleischmann gives us some history of the famous model makers, and tells us what’s new at the Nürnberg Toy Fair.

Ticket to Ride - Out & About Oslo Bergen (??-mins) ()

Ticket to Ride - Out & About Oslo Bergen (??-mins) ()

Ref: FH182D

Oslo, not the largest of the Nordic capital cities, but certainly the most stunning; lying deep in the Oslofjord. Comings and goings are fascinating: by water there are Scandinavian connections and ferries to Germany, and if you fly in there is the new high speed line from Gardemond airport and the Flytoget to look forward to. The NSB's - Norwegian State Railway - hub is Oslo S, arrival point for the airport trains and the starting point for unforgettable main line journeys within Norway, or to near neighbour - and past ruler - Sweden. Perhaps more than any other Nordic city you need to use the suburban railway - the T-banen - to optimise your time in the city. The T- banen runs metro style in the city, then pantographs raised, train style to suburbs and fjord towns. The NSB suburban trains are not pretty but are superbly spacious and reliable. City visits include the Viking museum and the Kontiki. Our day trips: Halden, the last Norwegian city on the run to Göteborg where the views from the fort are fantastic, and Bergen - you can't really make this one in a day - we see the UNESCO city, cruise the fjords and take the Flåmbanen - where the views are as stunning as as you will find ANYWHERE in Europe. The run to Bergen is across the 'top of the world' dashing through the mountain snow at 160kph under bright blue skies. If you plan to visit Norway and use the train this is the definitive guide!

Ticket to Ride No.6: Out & About Lisbon (65-mins) (DVD-R)

Ticket to Ride No.6: Out & About Lisbon (65-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: FH106D

In TTR-6 we explore the beautiful capital of Portugal-Lisbon. We: look at flights to Lisbon, the airport and getting "down town". Lisbon has a modern and efficient metro. On business or as a tourist you will need to use it. TTR examines it in depth and tells you how to avoid the pitfalls! The tram system is a delight, whether you use it or not, it is an icon of the city. The old work horses have been joined by new trams that add a touch of colour and a new transport dimension. The old harbour district of the city is linked to the newer area by no less then three, fascinating, funiculars, each with their very own distinctive characters- travel on them all with Ticket to Ride... Lisbon is divided from its southern suburbs, and indeed from all points south, by the River Tagus. The 25th Abril suspension bridge now boasts a rail link on the lower deck. Travel with us on the new trains and see how they fit into the public transport geography of the city. Oriente is the rail and metro station which serves the Expo site. It is also stunning! Designed by the Spaniard Calatrava this vast gateway is a modern railway cathedral of glass and steel. We take the opportunity to have a quick look at the Expo site and enjoy the views from the cable car. If, after a few days of Lisbon you wish to see some of the attractions beyond the city Ticket to Ride offers some suggestions: Along the Estoril suburban rail line to Cascais and then cross country by Stagecoach bus to the beautiful and ancient city of Sintra before returning to Lisbon by rail via the legendary suburb of Benfica. We even have time for a quick journey north, on the route of the Porto Alfa, to Vila Franca. The ferry across the Tagus links Lisbon with the rail network to Beja and the Algarve. We take the ferry, wonder at the views of the city which this provides and look at the travel opportunities from the CP’s Barreiro terminus south of the estuary. The film is narrated by BBC Radio and Television presenter Jonathan Hewat, and is lavishly illustrated with plans and maps throughout.

Ticket to Ride No.9: ICT Cabride+ Singen to Stuttgart (97-mins) (DVD-R)

Ticket to Ride No.9: ICT Cabride+ Singen to Stuttgart (97-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: FH111D

The route between Singen, on the banks of Lake Constance, and Stuttgart, the "capital" of Baden Württemberg, is in fact an international corridor of considerable importance. It links middle Germany with both Zürich and Milan. While not an Alpine route it twists and turns through the foothills of the Black Forest and is consequently quite slow. To reduce journey times on this difficult corridor the DB and the Italian Railways have opted to run "tilting" trains. The FS use a version of their tried and tested "Pendolino" while Siemens developed a "tilting" version of the ICE for the Bundesbahn. The result of this endeavour is the ICT, arguably the most stylish train set in Europe. Our journey is from Singen, (where trains from Zürich or Milan must reverse), to Stuttgart and you will see for yourself how well the ICT takes the curves at 30% higher speeds than conventional trains. To add to the enjoyment the countryside is sublime, at least as far as Horb, and the spring weather bright and clear. We pass the usual assortment of trains that you would expect on route, passenger -including another ICT- and freight, and on the run into Stuttgart we can see the DB’s new S bahn trains, ICE’s, a DB Cargo 143 and a "Cisalpino" Pendolino unit awaiting departure from the Hbf. The film is lightly narrated by Phyllis Watts and includes a technical description of the ICT, as supplied by the manufacturer Siemens, and a quick look at other ICT routes. Filmed in DVC Pro to broadcast standards. This is the fourth of a series of five Rail Films on Germany 2000 from Ticket to Ride.. Cover pictures courtesy of Siemens AG.

Ticket to Ride No.11: Rhine Cabride+ Koblenz to Frankfurt (90-mins) (DVD)

Ticket to Ride No.11: Rhine Cabride+ Koblenz to Frankfurt (90-mins) (DVD)

Ref: FH114D

In addition to allowing the viewer to enjoy the scene from the driving seat we tell the story of the route - from both a technical point of view and from that of a potential visitor to the area. Sometimes we take a break from the journey to watch the trains go by. But don’t worry, we pick up the cab ride where we left off! At least four trains an hour in each direction ply this major international route, InterCity, EuroCity and ICTs. Add in local traffic and freight and its a busy trip! We travel south from Koblenz in the driving trailer of train IC 725 that started its run at Dortmund and will conclude its itinerary in Nuremberg. Tail end power is a EuroSprinter derived Class 120. Down the most picturesque section of the river: Boppard, St Goar, Oberwesel before calling at Mainz, where we see work in progress on the NBS that will link Mainz with Cologne. Across the Rhine past the General Motors works at Rüsselsheim and then onto the first section of the Cologne - Frankfurt Neubau strecker to be completed. Then it’s a pause at the striking new airport station before entering the Frankfurt urban area. Across the Main and into the Hauptbahnhof. During the journey we have external shots from the lineside, the river and even a quick look at Cologne from the air! Filmed in June 2000 this is the third of a series of five Rail Films on Germany 2000 from Ticket to Ride.. Filmed in DVC Pro to Broadcast standards and narrated by Wiltshire travel writer Phyllis Watts.

WR note: The first half of the sleeve text for this DVD is a little misleading. I've seen the DVD & it is as described above i.e. IC725 and not IC614. The DVD starts with a description & video clips of the route this train takes from Dortmund to Dusseldorf, Cologne and Bonn before reaching Koblenz. The cab ride proper starts at 4:24 mins into the DVD.

Ticket to Ride No.16-1: GySEV in Austria (80-mins) (DVD-R)

Ticket to Ride No.16-1: GySEV in Austria (80-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: FH118D

The GySEV is unique! An international railway that avoided the clutches of Communism and the dowdy state imperialism of the post war period to emerge in the 21st century as a modern link between east and west. To say that the GySEV is a private railway is an over simplification, it's major share holders are the governments of the two countries that it links, Austria and Hungary. It has however developed in its own way, borrowing a little from both sides but retaining a distinctive flavour of its own. To add to the charm of the system, the eclectrified main line from Gyor-Sapron-Ebenfurti Vasut (or Ebenfurth in German) along which ply international passenger trains and huge quantities of freight, is crisscrossed by branch lines that seem to belong to a different era. Along the Neusiedl am See "branch" that runs to the east of the Neusiedler See, the "pick up goods train" is alive and well!

The whole area is covered by the film. We start in Vienna at the OBB's unusual triangular terminal -the Sud bahnhof, and then follow the mainline towards the Semmering and Italy. Ebenfurth is where the GySEV meets the OBB and where our adventure begins.....

Ticket to Ride No.16-2: GySEV in Hungary (120-mins) ()

Ref: FH119D

Welcome to Hungary! This video production follows the fortune of the GySEV, the MÁV and indeed the ÖBB in the west of Hungary; Sopron, Deutschkreutz and Györ and all points between. Hungary is a fascinating venue for a rail film. A country at the crossroads of Europe with a rail system that is modernising fast and yet retains something of the east European “exotic”! The GySEV is no minor player. The company, part owned by Austria, part by Hungary and part by the German port of Hamburg is a major league freight carrier. Sopron is not only a major tourist town it’s also the eastern “hub” for the “Quality Net” Europe wide container network. It’s also the terminal for several RoLa -”piggyback” services from Germany. But the line is best known for its international transit traffic linking Germany with the Balkans, Greece and Turkey. On our journey we have time to look at some of the attractions on the way: The Esterházy Palace, Nagycenk-for the mansion and the narrow gauge steam railway, museum and the Neusiedler See. But it’s the railway that makes the link, we never stray very far from the constant passing of the trains on this main line. By the time we reach Györ we are in MÁV territory, the EuroCity route from Vienna via Hegyeshalom has joined us and the line is now incredibly busy with international freight and passenger working-to say nothing of the MÁV locals and ICs! The Video was filmed by Austrian signal Engineer Gerald Masser, it has been digitally edited by FHP Audio Visual in the UK. The English narration is by Phyllis Watts.

Ticket to Ride No.17: Out & About Barcelona (80-mins) ()

Ref: FH120D

Your Ticket to Ride team usually tell you how to get from the city airport to down town, but this trip we arrive on a TALGO from France. This gives us the opportunity to watch the transfer from the European standard gauge to the RENFE broad gauge at Portbou before travelling on to the regional capital. Barcelona has always been a spectacular city, but since the 1992 Olympic games it has developed a transport system to match! We use it to get the most out of the city and your time. We travel the metro, the funiculars and the cable ways plus the extensive suburban rail system run by RENFE, the state railway, and the delightful FGC narrow gauge system run by the regional transport authority. We take a trip to Montserrat courtesy of the FGC and then enjoy the panoramic views of the Catalonian countryside and the railway! We take day trips north and south from the capital by rail. To the fortress town of Girona to the north by TALGO, to Blanes along the RENFE Matador Line and to the Roman city of Tarragona 50 miles south along side the Costa Dorada.-the Gold Coast. For the rail enthusiast there is plenty of RENFE’s finest to admire: Container trains, unit steel trains and one of the longest load of cars that we will ever encounter! TALGOs abound, we catch them at speed as they transit the Costa Dorada and at rest in Sants. The Euromeds are TGV “Clones” They make a great sight running next to some world class bathing beaches-what a mix! In Barcelona we visits the sites and pick some specials for rail fans: The Montjuic Castle, is an interesting journey by funicular and cable car. The reward is the view from the ramparts over Barcelona’s massive port and container terminals where RENFE can be seen going about its business.

Ref: FH121D

The name TALGO conjures images of the exotic. The holiday where the journey is nearly as important as the destination. The dash through France and then into Spain, which seems even more foreign. At least today there is no pile out of one train and into another at the border. But at least it’s a border that still seems to matter! See how the magic is done with us, and then enjoy the journey to Figueres, and Girona. This is a great run to make with the driver! It gets better the further south you go. Part two takes you to through the heart of Barcelona, perhaps Spain’s liveliest city, and part three along the sandy beaches of the Costa Daurada. It’s an international route and we pass other TALGOs, and RENFE going about its daily work of moving passengers and freight. Lavishly illustrated, and narrated by Phyllis Watts

In part one of our TALGO journey through Spain we arrived at Girona. In part two we head for the Catatonian capital Barcelona. It's a busy double track line and we have to compete for track space with other international trains, freight and passenger, plus all the local services you would expect to see around a world class city. We cheat slightly on route, to give you the opportunity for a quick look at Blanes, the holiday resort on the Costa Brava that has been popular with the British for generations. Then it's into Barcelona through the complex series of tunnels that link the network to the north east with that to the south west. We look at all the main stations and show which is best for what. Although the TALGO does not call at Franca station, such a beautiful terminal could not be left out! These diversions are included for your enjoyment, in addition to which the entire route from the cab of the Talgo's 252 locomotive is covered. Lavishly illustrated, and narrated by Phyllis Watts

Ticket to Ride No.29-1: Rhine Cabride+ Koblenz to Cologne (60-mins) ()

Ref: FH144D

Koblenz to Cologne Cabride+ IC 614 starts her run north from Munich every day at the unearthly hour of 05.23. She will run to Stuttgart via Augsburg and Ulm. For the time being she will have to reverse at Stuttgart, Land Hauptstadt of Baden-Württemberg, and then take the NBS to Mannheim. Her next call is the university city of Heidelburg, where she pauses briefly before swinging west to avoid Frankfurt. She calls at Mainz and would normally take the left bank IC line towards Koblenz. But today, because of engineering work on the line she is diverted across the Rhine to pick up the right bank line via Rüdesheim where we pick up the action watching IC trains scuttle along the promanade of this tiny Rhine-side town. The main line is regained at Koblenz, we have a look at this great rail centre, and join the driver on the footplate for the run to Bonn and Cologne. It’s a busy route and we pass ICs, ECs, ICEs and freight-more freight in fact than you would expect! At Bonn we have a quick look around, and even cross to Bonn Beuel, before continuing north past the massive new container terminal, before weaving slowly into the massive Cologne Hbf. This is more than just a cabride, it’s a mini documentary that really gives you the flavour of the route! Enjoy it now! This will be the last summer of ceaseless activity, for as of winter 2002 most fast trains will be taken over by ICE3 sets, and will run along the Rhein Main NBS, a faster but less scenic journey.. Filmed from: lineside, boat, and train - narrated by Phyllis Watts.

Railfreight in the Netherlands is changing and changing fast! New operators now compete with the national incumbent Railion. The first open access company to run revenue earning freight was the Rotterdam based SHORT LINES and with TTR35-1 you have the opportunity to join it for a day's work hauling the oil tanker empties back from Switzerland. For maximum flexibility SHORT LINES has leased two General Motors : Class 66 locomotives from Portabrook hence the locos are simply known as PB's! Our journey starts on the Dutch border at Venlo when the HGK MAK locomotive hands over the train to its partner and the 66 can get underway. Without station calls to interrupt our progress it's amazing how quickly we cover the ground. Utrecht is reached in 90 minutes, not much more than would be required by an IC! Along the way we have time to discuss the direction railfreight is taking in Holland, and of course point out the places of interest we pass. In addition to the narration by Phyllis Watts your SHORT LINES driver, Chris Westerduin, chats away happily in English to your cameraman to give another angle on the run. Filmed in glorious spring 2003 weather part two takes us through the National Railway Museum, the Amsterdam suburbs, Amsterdam CS and then down to the docks.

Our SHORT LINES journey to the harbour at Amsterdam continues! At Utrecht we take the freight only road around the east of the city past the National Railway Museum before regaining the main line towards Hilversum. North of Hilversum we are in the Amsterdam commuter area, and the 66 has to pick its way carefully through the traffic as we pass through the centre of Holland's largest city. Near the Central Station we pass a couple of ICEs inbound from and outbound to Frankfurt, before we pause to pick up our shunter who will help us when we get down to the docks. West of CS work is in full swing on the modernisation of the approaches, it won't be that long before this is part of the High Speed Line to Brussels and Paris and - perhaps- to the UK! Down at the docks Railion are preparing to depart with a massive coal train for the Ruhr, but we still have a little way go, as we must reverse through the harbour complex to reach the petroleum quays. We seem to have attracted the attention of Dutch enthusiasts as we are greeted by a positive gang of photographers. Our driver Chris Westerduin rewards them by pausing for a photocall in front of nice bed of daffodils thoughtfully planted by the port authority!

Ticket to Ride No.36: Railfreight Holland (80-mins) ()

Ref: FH149D

Railfreight in the Netherlands is changing- and changing fast! But the importance of the network of rail connected ports remains pivotal to the success of this and indeed all transport modes. We tour the major ports starting at Terneuzen - an enclave of RAILION which is linked with the NMBS I SNCB network rather than the NS - then, on to the sister port of Vlissingen to watch the new Ford traffic arriving from Germany and Genk. Before we get to the big one - Rotterdam - we spend some time at the Netherland's largest marshalling yard at Kijfhoek. We watch wagons going over the hump, visit the control room, and watch wagons being chased into their allocated slots by teams of mechanical mules! We follow a local trip working across the Maas to Vlaardingen to see a delivery of raw materials for the food industry, and a local oil delivery being undertaken. Rotterdam is Europe's largest container port and is served by two terminals: the Rail Service Centre which serves the older Waalhaven, while Europort Delta serves the Maasvlakte quays- where the true giants of the ocean berth. We visit both terminals; exploring both shipside and railside. We also explore the port line and its railfreight customers, and look at the modernisation that is currently underway as part of the Betuweroute programme. This film has been made with the extensive and active co-operation of RAILION, NS infrastructure, SHORTLINES, ACTS, European Rail Shuffle (ERS), Europe Container Terminals (ECT), the Port of Rotterdam, the RSC Rotterdam and many others. Part two of this series continues with the Maasvlakte iron ore terminal before heading towards Germany to watch the port shuffles and see the Bentheimer Eisenbahn at work. The programme is comprehensively narrated with animation sequences courtesy of Transpoint.

Ref: FH154D

Antwerp is Europe's third largest port but the most important for railfreight. As important in fact for the German economy as for that of Belgium. Line 34 was actually built by the Germans to give easy access to the north sea! Now it's as busy as ever and we chart the route from Antwerp to Aachen. At Antwerp we spend some time looking at the freight which travels the line; bananas from the National Fruit Quay bound for Germany, paper inbound from Austria, then see how B-Cargo process it and dispatch it through the busy section from Nord to Berchem. We follow the mixed use railway through Aarschot and Diest to Hasselt and then to Glons where line 34 becomes line 24! Impressive civil engineering follows: across the Albert canal and the Meuse at Visé. Before you know it you're at Montzen yard and we start the run over the non-electrified section to the German border. Along this section you will find a huge variety of diesel traction both from the SNCB NMBS and from the DB. The Montzen viaduct is spectacular - the second longest in Belgium - and we watch trains spanning the years as well as the valley! The Gemmenicher tunnel is quite plain on the Belgian side but highly decorated on the German portal! Watch the heavy freights being banked up the incline in a variety of combinations! Then it's Aachen and we view all the action from 212s to the latest traction from the SBB, Rail4Chem and DB Cargo. Filmed by Tim Martin and Peter Van Gestel, digitally edited in the UK by FHP Audio Visual- the producers of B-Cargo Belgian Railfreight Today!

Belgium's most scenic railway? Well we think so! This film charts the line from north to south beginning at Liège and ending not in Belgium at all but in Luxembourg. It is the line's raison d'etre to link the capital of French speaking Belgium with the Grand Duchy. The film charts the line both historically - most of the footage was taken during the late 1990s when the line was non electrified - as well as geographically. Rivage is the starting point for line 42 and we view the former motive power shop before hitching up to a heavy mineral train for the journey south through the limestone gorge cut by the beautiful river Amblève. We criss cross the river as we head for Aywaille, in time for the Saturday morning market, Stoumont and Trois - Ponts where the remains of the former line to Spa via Stavelot can be seen, as well as the twisty tourist line the Vennbahn. We head further south in close company with the N68 to Vielsalm, a crossing point on this mostly single track route and where much of the Ardennes timber is loaded to rail. We journey through time here to see the railway under the wire and see how a modern B-Cargo loads the timber. Luxembourg is entered just south of Gouvy but we continue south for a quick look at the capital of the Grand Duchy. Also included: a steam day out with an ex PKP Kriegs Loc and a look at the electric railway being built on top of the classic line.

The capital city of Finland has an appeal quite different from its Scandinavian neighbours. There is plenty to see and do, and Ticket to Ride.. helps you sort out some of the best, and of course, gets you using the city's superb public transport system to make the most of your time and your euros. Once we get down town from Vantaa airport we look over some of the city's hotels, where you get good access to the surprisingly dense tram system. We use the trams to see the sights, but for those more distant attractions we take to the train. The centre of the VR passenger network is the magnificent neo-classical Central station. We have a good look around, admire the new roof built to mark the city's year as capital of European culture and see how connections with the metro are made. We make a day trip to the city of Turku, the ancient capital of Finland, stopping off at KarjalKaris and diverting to Hanko on the way. This gives us the opportunity to see VR at work: Pendolinos, the Soviet SRi and state of the art SR2 - broad gauge Lok 2000s - plus double deck IC cars and the latest in suburban rail travel from Fiat. We also make an excursion across 40 miles of the Baltic to the Estonian capital Tallinn by ferry, with a return onboard a high tech catamaran. Extras include a ferry hopping tour of the Turku archipelago, a boat trip to the fortress at Suomenlinna and a visit to the Helsinki tram museum. For rail fans, there is a visit to Kouvola where we watch VR Cargo switching European and Russian wagons near the ports of Kotka and Hamina.

Ticket to Ride No.43: ACTS Cabride plus "The American" (100-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: FH155D

Railfreight in the Netherlands is changing, and changing fast! New operators now compete with the national incumbent Railion. When the state owned company wished to divest itself of internal - that's within the Netherlands - container transport, Vos Logistics rose to the challenge and ACTS was formed to take over the business. The locomotives used on this Leeuwarden shuttle are not exactly in the first flushes of youth, being purchased second hand from the NS. The class 1200 are American in design, and it shows, and require an unusual driving style, you will see your driver (an NS instructor) demonstrate this. The run to the marshalling yard south of Rotterdam could hardly be called direct! First, we head north to Amsterdam, then around the city rail ring before heading south once more. All this to avoid congested Utrecht! The run varies from open countryside to intensely urban Rotterdam, and includes some great views of part of the quadrupling work currently underway. Part two of this run will take the port line to Europe's busiest container terminal.

GM Class 66 ERS out, Belgian Class 62 back! The Rail Service Centre at Rotterdam lies just to the west of Kijfhoek marshalling yard - the largest in the Netherlands. The RSC is integrated into the eastern dock complex, it's where containers from barges and smaller ships are landed. Container trains from a huge variety of rail operators call here on their way to or from Europe\'s largest container loading facility: Maasvlakte Delta terminal. Inbound from Europe- containers are unloaded, outward bound to the mainland- containers are picked up. Turn round is tight! We start our run at Delta and follow the Port Line to the RSC with a GM 66. We pass heavy ore trains inbound from Germany, Railion container trains, wagonload freight, unit chemical trains and much more! It's an industrial landscape with its own particular beauty; busy with trip freights heading for Kijfhoek. The line is undergoing modernisation as part of the Betuwe route development. Electrification masts are in situ in places, and a double track tunnel is being built to avoid a single track lifting bridge, a shame in a way as it's a spectacular crossing - we take it, and watch other trains do the same. We queue up to enter the RSC - like London Heathrow with trains rather than planes! When we get a slot, we ease in and loading starts almost before we grind to a halt! Time for a quick look around, then back to Delta with ACTS Class 62 Belgian diesel. Next week she returns home, but she gives us a different perspective of the Port Line before she goes! This not JUST a Cabride- there is much more - none of it would have been possible without the help of ECT Maasvlakte, Short Lines, the RSC Rotterdam and ACTS.

The second in this professional series starts at the Amazon Quay at Rotterdam Maasvlakte where Brazilian iron ore is unloaded by mighty cranes, and then loaded to barge or train to journey into Belgium or Germany. We then follow the main routes to Germany observing the entry points at Venlo and Arnhem before visiting Born to collect some air miles with the ShortLines container shuttle driver! Not far away there are DSM wagonload chemicals and the old DAF plant now owned by Mitsubishi. We look at the coastal CORUS plant and the port of Amsterdam which shifts large quantities of coal to the Ruhr, and then head north to see the ACTS shuttles at work at Onnen and Leeuwarden. East this time to Delfzijl to see the chlorine trains, and other activity at the Nobel Chemie Park and waste trains to Germany. Finally to Coevorden where RAILION, ACTS and the Bentheimer Eisenbahn come together to feed Europe’s pets! All this, plus the Betuweroute to Germany and the competing Iron Rhine make TTR46 compulsive viewing for rail fan or transport professional.

Ticket to Ride No.47: Out & About Bratislava (??-mins) ()

Ref: FH161D

Just 40 miles from Vienna, but until May 2004 it seemed much further! Now it’s a great day trip from the Austrian capital, or a base for a few days to see this beautiful country by train. First things first, let’s get there - a bewildering choice is offered- including flying in direct and the Danube hydrofoil- but we enter and exit by rail. The back door to the north of Bratislava and the EC route to the south. Petrzalka station is modern and efficient and a great place to watch the international trains - freight and passenger. It’s easy to get to nowadays as Bratislava is now an EU City, and there is an almost hourly OBB service to the Vienna Südbahnhof. To reach the old town and the meat of the city you have to cross the Danube. On the way you get some great views of the famous castle. We visit this, plus the other “ must do” sights and at the same time learn how to use the extensive tram and trolley system: great fun - quick and cheap but avoid the rush hour! If you arrive from the north, and want to travel further into Slovakia, as we did, making a day trip to the lovely town of Trnava, or just want to watch trains then you will need to use Bratislava hl station. Don’t try and walk- use one the frequent trams! hl is just how you would imagine a pre glasnost eastern block main rail station to be! But the ponderous activity makes for great train and people watching! Next door is the Slovakian National Rail Museum and we pay it a visit. A very nice collection awaits your attention; both rail vehicles and equipment together with one of the best gatherings of eastern European classic and vintage cars: TATRA, Wartburg and Skoda of course! Strictly for rail fans; we have a section for you on Slovakian railfreight.

The great meeting point between east and west.

Austria's capital on the Danube evokes visions of splendid architecture, grand castles, the opera house and more! But to see it you'II have to get on terms with Vienna's public transport system. It's layers deep The plane feeds into the train-- the CAT in this case- - that feeds the S-Bahn that feeds the metro that feeds the tram that.....Don't worry, all will be revealed, - it's not that difficult to master and anyway it's great fun! Vienna is a major city on the Grand Tour along with Budapest and Prague - so many arrivals will be by rail. We follow the exotic assembly of EuroCity trains in from East and West, get you used to the two main stations the Südbahnhof and the Westbahnhof. The Vorortelinie, - an old military inspired railway - is now part of the S Bahn net, we follow it as it snakes across the city and admire the transport architecture of visionary Otto Wagner. We will use our Vienna card to visit the sights - including the twin icons- the cathedral and the giant ferris wheel immortalised by Harry Lime! - using the wonderful Viennese tram system and new metro. Then we make a few trips out of the city - by train or tram of course: The Liliput Bahn, Grinzing for the wine of Wien, Prater Park- - gardens and fun fair, Schönbrunn - the magnificent palace and the Schneebergbahn for a steam train ride up a mountain. We will show you hotels, where to drink coffee and eat dark chocolate cake, buy tickets and icecream! Our rail journey through the Netherlands continues. We leave the Randstad at Utrecht and head east: Amersfoort to admire modern Dutch railway architecture and see Koplopers at work, and Baarn- the forgotten freight route. Onward to Arnhem, though not technically a border station in practice the major northern gateway to Germany - the route of the ICEs and fast and heavy freight to the Ruhr. We travel beyond the border to Emmerich and to Duisberg and discuss the prospects for a higher speed connection between the two countries. Heading north we track the route from Amsterdam through Apeldoorn, Deventer and Hengelo to the border stations at Enschede and Bad Bentheim. Still further north through Emmen and Coevorden to see the pet food plant. At Nieuweschans we travel the recently modernised route to Leer. We visit the regional capital Groningen before heading back west via Leeuwarden and then south to Zwolle and Lelystad and see the plan for a new route north. We conclude with a trip around Veenpark hauled by a Feldbahn diesel.

Ticket to Ride No.50: The Railways of Austria - Part 1- The East. (90-mins) ()

Ref: FH164D

Austria has long been the buffer between east and west, but with enlargement of the EU has become an eastern crossroad for the new Europe. We concentrate on Lower Austria: the Südbahn, the Ostbahn and the Westbahn - all coming together in Vienna and its three main stations. We look at EuroCity activity to Hungary and the Czech Republic plus - what is now almost a domestic service to Slovakia. We discuss the prospects of a new central station for Vienna and then follow the NEW Westbahn to Linz, see the recently rebuilt station and climb the hills above the city with the delightful Pöstlingbergbahn. Then on to the Czech border near Summerau to see some unusual international workings and at nearby Gmünd narrow gauge steam. The freight business is surprisingly deregulated. The old and the new order aggregate more than 200 trains a day between Linz and St. Pölten. We make visits to Kledering - the largest and most technically advanced wagonload facility in the east of Europe - you get the grand tour from the tower and the hump and watch wagons from all over Europe pass through this vast railway melting pot. Europe’s most advanced traction is on display, from the high tech multi current machines from Siemens and Bombardier, like the pretty Taurus, and new diesels from Vossloh - not forgetting the …ÖBB’s mighty Hercules. All this, plus the Mariazellerbahn and a lesson on Austrian signalling!

We arrive in Bavaria by rail from the north. Our first stop is Würzburg- a Bavarian city of great character. We explore the city and nearby "romantic" Rothenburg before heading for Nürnberg. Totally rebuilt with much care after WW2 Nürnberg is a busy city on the Main Donau canal with much to offer the rail-based tourist. It's a major cross road on the DB InterCity network, with a new high speed rail link to the south under construction. Getting around is easy once you have mastered the tram, S Bahn and metro. We visit the sights and make special calls at the National Rail Museum, the Toy Museum and the Zoo (by tram of course) and ride the Adler! For some day trip ideas we visit: beautiful Bamburg, Bayreuth and Lichtenfels, the basket making town. Then we travel to visit Audi at Ingolstadt and on to the international toy fair where Rolf Fleischmann, grandson of the founder, introduces us to his company and the Stadt Schwabach museum- home of the Fleischmann collection.

Welcome to Norway! We are going to undertake one of the world’s great railway journies: the 500 km from Norway’s capital Oslo to its second city Bergen. The first section takes us through busy suburban Oslo to Asker then through the Lieråsen tunnel to the port town of Drammen. There’s new infrastructure ready to be brought into use around Lysaker as the NSB has plans to double the capacity of the route with a highspeed line coming on stream.

Drammen is Norway’s premier car import terminal and we pass the distinctive wagons before crossing the dramatic Drammenfjord. We pass many commuter trains en route including the new order from Breda in Italy, Lok2000s, like our own head end power, and Agenda units - the NSB’s latest. From Drammen we head north alongside the Drammenselva and pass Green Cargo Rcs hauling a heavy paper train near Vikersund. The run to the end of the first section of our run at HØnefoss is along side the Tyrifjorden - beautiful!

Welcome back to Norway! We are going to undertake one of the world’s great railway journies: the 500 km from Norway’s capital Oslo to its second city Bergen. Part two of our run is along, strangely, the last part of the Bergensbanen to be completed. The railway was built from west to east and the original terminus was at Gulsvik on Lake Krøderen. There were waterway connections down the lake to the town of Krøderen, and then a railway to Vikersund and Drammen. So, it’s a run along the lake gently gaining height: 207 metres by Gol, 437 metres by Ål. While there is little snow on the line over this part of the run, there is plenty on the mountains around us - a sign of things to come! The programme is narrated, but there is also some wonderful informative chit-chat with the crew, who tell us what it’s like to drive the Bergensbanen in winter, and what to look out for along the way. Ål marks the halfway point of our journey and this is where the Bergen men take over.

Welcome back to Norway! We are going to undertake one of the world’s great railway journies: the 500 km from Norway’s capital Oslo to its second city Bergen. The third section of our run starts at Ål, 437 metres absl. This is where the Bergensbanen really starts to climb: 437m at Ål, 794m at Geilo - the winter sports centre - to 1222m at Finse the highest station on the route. During the 1990s the NSB commissioned the Finse tunnel. The spoil from the tunnel excavation was used to create a causeway over the glaciar to the east. This has given the NSB a section of line suitable for 160kph running that is probably unique for an altitude of 1200 metres. With a bright blue sky and several metres of snow to the side of the trace it’s an exhilarating run for our El18! At Myrdal we meet the wonderful Flåmbanen-the world’s most exciting tourist railway?

Welcome back to Norway! We are going to undertake one of the world's great railway journies: the 500 km from Norway's capital Oslo to its second city Bergen. The fourth section of our run starts at Myrdal, the junction station for the Flåmbanen. We have passed the highest point of the line but we are still well above the tree line and snow covers the ground on either side of the route. On leaving Myrdal we immediately plunge into the Gravehalsen tunnel. This tunnel was started by Italian navvies and completed by Norwegians, but at a huge cost in human life. Its a steady descent for mile after mile alongside the tumbling river to the “alpine” village of Voss.

This station marks the point where the Bergensbanen becomes the Vossebanen - the oldest part of the railway still in operation between Oslo and Bergen. We pass through the new Trollkona tunnel and then run beside the Sørfjorden to Arna. From Arna to Bergen we run under Mount Fløyen and then it's a meander past the Bergen freight yard and into the splendid station.

Continues our unforgettable journey from the driver's cab of IC2370 BODENSEE on her journey from Konstanz through the Schwarzwald. TTR59 starts at Villingen, and is the longest section including the tunnel complex at Triberg that drops us over 400m in 10km between St Georgen and Hornberg. This section also has the most dramatic scenery. The slowest part of the journey is followed by the fastest as we turn west at Hausach and head along the Kinzig valley before arrival at Offenburg. After arrival we have time to take a look at freight activity in the area. We travel the few miles to Kehl the Rhine side port that serves both this quarter of Baden Wertemburg but also the major French city of Strasbourg.

Ticket to Ride No.62: ICE3 Cabride+ Rhine Main NBS (75-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: FH168D

Join us for a run in Europe's fastest train- the ICE3 from Die Bahn. This 320kph machine is on its home ground on the run over the Rhein Main Neubaustrecke (NBS) between Frankfurt Hbf and Cologne. This NBS is the first in Germany that is a dedicated high speed line, and through the Westerwald there are sections that feel like a rollercoaster rather than a railway! The first section is conventional enough - out of the busy Frankfurt Hbf, over the Main past Sportfeld, where a new station is being built to serve the stadium that will host the FIFA World Cup in 2006, and into Frankfurt Flughaven Fernbahnhof. The high speed section begins soon after leaving the airport. For much of the run we are alongside the A3 Motorway, but at 300kph even the most macho German motorists are left trailing in our wake! We go from full power uphill to 75% regenerative braking on the downs - no friction brakes are used over the NBS. We pause at the new Bonn station and then it's ABS - rebuilt line - to Cologne. Over this section the ICE3 set has its own tracks but passes other traffic including freight to nearby Gremberg yard. Over the Hohenzollernbrücke and we are in Cologne.

Ticket to Ride No.64: ICE Cabride+ Basel to Karlsruhe (102-mins) ()

Ticket to Ride No.64: ICE Cabride+ Basel to Karlsruhe (102-mins) ()

Ref: FH169D

It’s a fine spring morning in June 2005 and we are waiting at the Basel Badische Bahnhof, the German station that lies just within the Swiss Canton of Basel. We await the arrival of ICE 878. The InterCity Express started from Basel SBB, just 5km to the south, and arrives promptly at 10.20. From the cab of the gleaming white ICE1 unit we see Switzerland slip by as we enter Germany at Weil am Rhein. The run to our first stop at Freiburg takes us along

the edge of the Hochschwarzwald through pretty villages with vineyards that produce some of Germany’s finest wines. There is plenty to see on the railway to distract us as this is one of the busiest international rail routes in Europe: each day there are 22 ICEs up and 22 down, Regional Express trains every half hour and EuroCity trains from deep in Switzerland to destinations in Northern Germany. But it’s the colourful assembly of freight trains that are most noticeable. While the lion’s share is in the hands of German freight giant RAILION, one third is in the hands of the Swiss railways- SBB, using modified RE482s in their dark blue and red livery. As we approach Freiburg we pass a Rolling Highway train that has just started her run to Nova in Italy. North of Freiburg it gets ridiculously busy, trains are passing us every few minutes, and southbound EC9 is brought to a halt because of the pure weight of freights in front of her.

Offenburg is a major rail junction where we see a DLC class 66 from Rotterdam. North of the city the nature of our journey changes: we are on an ABS. A new high-speed line has been shoehorned along side the existing line along which the ICEs can run at 250kph, allowing us to sail passed the incessant freights. At Rastatt we follow the westerly of the parallel main lines into Karlsruhe were we have time for a look at the remarkable tram trains running through the city. Narrated and supported with animated graphics.

Norway is a big country with a small population. But the Norwegians have engineered a rail network through the uncompromising landscape with great commitment, and have become a world authority on tunnelling in the process! We explore the 3,000 mile network from Halden on the Swedish border in the south to Bodo in the north, from Bergen on the western fjord coast to Eidsvoll in the east. We spend time in Oslo, but mostly we escape the capital and roam the rails in the provinces. In Norway you will see trains that you just don't see elsewhere; like the elk proof class 73s and new regional trains built in Italy, together with a few familiar friends like the Lok 2000- used on long distance and night trains. We see how the trains are maintained for their tough assignments with a visit to the the NSB depot outside Oslo, and have a behind the scenes look at the Flytoget; the 220kph airport express which is the fastest train in Scandinavia. Freight is not forgotten, at Halden you will see Green Cargo with a German Intermodal , while in the far north you will see a GM 66 at work and the Arctic Rail Express being assembled. At Trondheim we see Europe's most northerly tramway and at Hamar visit the National Railway museum for a steam train run. Narrated.

Bavaria (Bayern) is Germany’s largest Lande. It contains the industrial powerhouses of Nürnberg and Ingolstadt plus the ancient cites of Ulm and Würzburg, important cities set in a beautiful landscapes. We visit them all to see just how much Die Bahn has changed over the last five years. Off the beaten track we follow a pair of diesel operated mainlines south and west of Marktredwitz and visit the Deutsches Dampflok Museum at Neuenmarkt Wirsberg. At Kronach, on the Frankenwaldbahn, we look down from the Schloß on the trains as they make their way to Saalfeld and Leipzig. At Kulmbach we try the local beer at the only Brewery in town with a rail connection. Bamberg has enough local freight traffic to justify a hump marshalling yard and we spend some time there. At Ingolstadt we see the NBS nearing completion and Audi cars being prepared for a journey north while at Ulm we scale the Dom to give you unprecedented views over the city.

Ref: FH098D

While not an EU country Switzerland is integral to cross-European freight traffic and has come to represent the very best in both passenger and freight transport by rail. The national railway, the SBB, is forward thinking and well funded. In this instalment we look at the main routes from Basel – the great entry point from Germany – down through Olten to the capital Bern. This area has one of Europe’s least known high-speed lines, recently built to reduce the journey time between Bern and Zurich and Basel to below the magic one-hour and make the BAHN 2000 project workable. We follow the new line and discuss its implications. We start at Basel and make the grand tour. At Bern we visit the modern station and see the BLS who now run the capital’s S Bahn trains in the city and further afield. We see a TGV near the famous Saanebrücke on the BLS line between Bern and Neuchâtel. On the freight side we explore the three Rhine side ports in Basel: Kleinhüningen, Birsfelden and Auhafen where we see coconut being unloaded the hard way from a rail wagon! At Feldschlösschen beer is dispatched while at Holcim, one of Europe’s largest cement producers, robot shunters assist the SBB –CARGO MAK1700. You will see ICNs, FLIRTS, Doubledeck stock and many of your old favourites including the BLS 4/4 still in brown livery. Filmed from the ground, water and air.

It’s a lovely day for a train ride alongside the north Swiss Lakes of Walensee and Zürichsee Our train is IC 572 the 1109 from Chur, where metre gauge connections were made to the fashionable resort of St Moritz, to Zürich and Basel. We join at Sargans with class 460 leading. We know the 460 well, we have filmed from the type before eight hours through the Norwegian mountains! Incredibly we will pass more trains in this 1hr and 10 minutes than we crossed all the way to Bergen! The huge single windscreen of our locomotive makes our cameraman’s life very easy. On time we start our run north and west. There is a lot packed into this run. In addition to all the Swiss trains you would expect there are a dozen freight facilities that we pass all working hard to supply wagons to the SBB Cargo wagonload network. While the route is a delight there are several quite long NBS tunnel sections, these we edit down as we don’t want to keep you in the dark too long! Filmed in July 2006 in lovely early summer weather with the sun behind us.

Ref: FH193D

The last year of the old Lötschberg, the first of the new............ The Lötschberg as we have known it for over 100 years will come to an end, but from its ashes will rise a new super railway UNDER the majestic Swiss Alps. In the meantime there is so much to remember from the old line along which we make a sentimental journey. We start at Spiez by the Thuner See and watch trains prepare for the arduous journey. Then we meander up the north ramp watching trains as we go. As far as Frutigen the changes to the route will be fairly minor, but here the new base tunnel begins. We inspect the site and have a look at the underground working before heading on to the Kanderviadukt. We get some splendid views from the ground and air, then onto the spiral complex at Felsenburg. We “drive” through the 14km tunnel to Goppenstein, use car and helicopter to find some unusual views of the structures that make the south ramp so memorable. We conclude at Brig with some stunning shots over the station and the Rhône valley.

Ticket to Ride No.84: Swiss Express part 2 (80-mins) ()

Ref: FH095D

In this instalment we start at Biel on the northern shore of the Bieler See. We follow the lake south to Neuchâtel and explore this very French town, and make a diversion to La Chaux-de-Fonds to see some narrow gauge freight being transferred. Back on the lake side, Lac de Neuchâtel this time, we view the NBS / ABS between Bevaix and Grandson. We spend a little time around Grandson – well it’s just so photogenic, then head south through Yverdon-les-Bains to Lausanne. The rest of the film is spent along side the Lake – Le Léman or Lac de Genève. We visit the town and station itself, St-Prex – where we see recycled glass being railed into Votropack, Neon and naturally Genève. We travel west of that very international city to watch TGVs cross the border into France. East of Lausanne is one of the most attractive stretches of railway line in Europe from Cully to Vevey we watch the trains run along side the lake from vantage points in the vineyards – it’s a tough job but someone has to do it!

Ticket to Ride No.93: IC Cabride+ Trier to Koblenz - The Moselstrecke (75-mins) () [TTR93]

Ref: FH070D

Welcome to Trier in the German state of Rheinland Pfalz. This cabride is a German classic. Just like the Rhine routes, it's a river hugging run through breath taking scenery. There is international interest here as well, the Moselstrecke is the number one route for SNCF freight entering the Federal Republic. In fact we see more Prima locomotives then native RAILION machines on our one hour twenty minute journey.

The run gets really interesting at Punderich where the Mosel run proper begins. Here we take a virtual pause and do a little photograhy from the hills above. At Bullay - an Umweltbahnhof - our train makes its second stop - another great place to watch the thundering freights pass! Then follows the 4.2 km Kaiser Wilhelm tunnel (cut) before Cochem and its fabulous Schloss. The rest of the run is very tight alongside the river through the famous vineyards. It's underneath the high Autobahnbrucke over the Mosel and into Koblenz. Haulage is a DB dual voltage class 181, catch this while you can! There is much off-train camerawork so you can fully enjoy what might be the last year of operation for the class. Filmed from train, land and boat.

Ticket to Ride No.97: Innsbruck and the Brenner in Austria (75-mins) (DVD-R)

Ticket to Ride No.97: Innsbruck and the Brenner in Austria (75-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: FH186D

Welcome to southern Austria. While the Gotthard railway links the north sea ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam with Italy (Milan and Genoa in particular) the Brenner links the north German ports of Hamburg, Bremerhafen and Bremen with Italy (Verona and points south). The Brenner, like the Semmering, can claim to have had a pass in operation before the 18th century. The railway that followed was built after the Semmering, but before the Gotthard. It was constructed without a base tunnel and so reaches 1,300m at the summit and suffers gradients of 3%. In terms of freight traffic the line is only exceeded by the Gotthard, and ties with the Semmering at 10 million tons a year. Over half of this is inter-modal. Traction is: OBB classes 1016, 1044, 1116 (Taurus) 1144 and 1142. Traction is changed (still!) at Brennero / Brenner except for an elite number of Euroloks from Siemens and Bombardier. We start at the lovely Tyrolian city of Innsbruck, explore the city and its trams and ultra modern Hungerburgbahn funicular and the "mountain" tram to Fulpmes. We conclude at Brenner / Brennero where we watch the RoLa trains being loaded. The mountain countryside is spectacular and our Austrian cameraman knows where to get the best views!

Ticket to Ride No.109: ICE Cabride Cologne to Hamm (75-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: FH046D

Welcome to Cologne with Ticket to Ride. Today we undertake a journey from Cologne, the capital city of the state of Nordrhein Westfalen to Hanover the capital of the state of Niedersachsen. TTR109 takes us as far as Hamm, a small city at the eastern extremity of the Ruhr. Our train is ICE 857 the 09.49 from Cologne Hauptbahnhof to Berlin via Wuppertal, Hagen, Hamm, Bielefeld and Hanover. It combines with ICE 847 at Hamm. 847 started at Bonn, avoided Cologne Hauptbahnhof by using the new Deutz ICE station and runs to Hamm via Düsseldorf, Essen and Dortmund.

At Hamm ICE 857 is joined by sister ICE2 unit 847. This train ran from Cologne Deutz through Düsseldorf, Duisberg, Bochum and Dortmund. The two ICE2 sets are now joined and are ready to depart. We travel to Hanover through: Gütersloh, Bielefeld, Herford, Minden, Wunstorf and Seelze. While not a particularly large yard in terms of the number of sorting sidings available, about 16, Seelze Rbf was extensively modernised between 2000 and 2005 using the latest in electronic control technology. Hanover Hauptbahnhof is the third station constructed on or near this site. It is very much the centre of the rail network in the state.

Ticket to Ride No.111: OBB Cabride+ The Semmeringbahn (90-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: FH056D

The Semmeringbahn links Vienna with Italy and Slovenia. Our journey starts at the Südbahnhof for passenger trains, and Kledering -Austria's most important classification yard for freight. At Wiener Neustadt there is a secondary freight yard where trains can be held and prepared, if necessary, before going on to the Semmering. Beyond this the railway runs across the flat Steinfeld through St Egyden and Gloggnitz, where there was, until the advent of high powered electric traction, the base station for the Semmering north ramp. The place where banker locomotives and assistants are attached and detached. The scenic section of the Semmering really begins around Payerbach Reichenau, 82 kilometres from Vienna at an altitude of 494 metres where there are still facilities to hold freight trains before they head for the hills! The section between Klamm and Breitenstein includes a number of short tunnels and viaducts, all the time the line is climbing at 1.9 per cent. This area is very remote and inaccessible, one of the most interesting elements of the whole route!

The drama of the Semmering is behind us. From now on we follow the valleys rather than cut across them. The scenery on this busy international route is just as lovely, but running alongside the river we can pick up the pace. First stop is Bruck an der Mur - not a large town but a surprisingly industrial one for a sub-alpine area. Much of this industrial activity is related to the metals business - the area arguably produces the finest steel in the world- used by companies such as Audi where quality is not compromised. At Bruck we lose the line to Graz but gain the route from Salzburg and the heavy traffic to Slovenia. Beyond Bruck we look at the fascinating rail geopgraphy of Leoben and St Michael before concluding at Knittelfeld

We continue our journey southwest towards Italy with our OBB EC 531. We are now at Knittelfeld, a small town alongside the Mur. The Tauern mountain range is to our right the Gleinalpe to our left. The weather is just right as we leave the town. Our next stop in this sub alpine idle is Zeltweg, indeed the IC becomes something of a regional train stopping at what seem like large villages all the way to St Veit. Here the nature of the railway changes and it's a fast run to Klagenfurt, the capital city of Carinthia and the sixth largest in Austria.

This is the final chapter in our run over the Südbahn with OEC 531 from the Südbahnhof in Vienna to Lienz in the Tyrol. We have reached Klagenfurt, the largest town and administrative centre of Carinthia, and are about to depart for Villach. We run alongside the Wörthersee, a holiday destination that the Austrians keep to themselves! Villach is a wonderful small city and a very important rail-crossroads: the lines from the Balkans to Germany, and from Italy to the eastern European countries cross here bringing much diversity. From Villach we head north-west alongside the river Drau. This this the approach to the Tauern mountain railway, but we turn west before the mountains, still following the Drau over the little known railway to Lienz. A very attractive run it is, but it's also strategically important as an alternative freight line to Innsbruck Salzburg. A lovely run in sunny summer weather!

our run over the Tauernbahn to Bad Gastein, our first stop north of the Tauern tunnel. The traffic is international - at one point we overtake an Italian E412 with an international wagon-load train that is taking advantage of the OBB's bi-directional signalling. In warm autumn sunshine we continue our journey north with a new train- a double deck RE from Koblenz Hbf. The first few kilometres are over the left bank line, busy with IC passenger trains as we cross the Mosel. The double track line crosses the direct line to Bonn and then the Rhine . At Neuwied we rejoin the right bank route to Troisdorf and Köln Deutz. Once again it’s a gentle pace but that’s OK as we get close views of the Rhine and its freight traffic. In 2005 Czech Railways- CD began to look for ways to increase the speed of trains over their network, which was once amongst the slowest in Europe. European funds were being pumped in and the major corridors were being comprehensively modernised and fettled for 160kph, or higher, running. But the standard speed over the network was 120kph – new stock was required to take advantage of the modernised infrastructure over key routes – Alstom Pendolinos were selected. The first part of our run to Prague is a relatively short hop, 45 mins, to the Czech Republic’s second city Brno

We leave the Republic’s second city, pass the freight yard and start a fascinating run north and west. While the line has been rebuilt, including many of the former restrictive tunnels along the way, it’s not a high speed line. The route follows the natural features through the forests and along the rivers - a lovely landscape that should be on any tourist itinerary. It’s along this section that the tilt technology of the Pendolino comes into its own – 100kph curves are eased through at 120 – the 8 degrees of artificial cant seems much more! The last section of this run is over the combined corridors 1&2 to the Republic’s third city, and the main west to east line- Prague to Ostrava and Poland. Narrated.

Visit Bratislava -the capital of Slovakia. An interesting city with a well used tram network. It has an unreformed main station - it still looks as if it’s 1969 not 2009! There is also a modern station at Petrzalka in the southern suburbs where trains from the OBB enter the country.

Czech border crossing: cross border workings are always interesting and those to the former east retain a little of the exotic.

TTR 11 Rhine Cabride+ Koblenz to Frankfurt (90-mins)

TTR 11 Rhine Cabride+ Koblenz to Frankfurt (90-mins)

Ref: FH042D

Then it's a pause at the striking new airport station before entering the Frankfurt urban area. Across the Main and into the Hauptbahnhof. During the journey we have external shots from the lineside, the river and even a quick look at Cologne from the air! Filmed in June 2000 this is the third of a series of five Rail Films on Germany 2000

Between the Lines No.6: Spring 2008 (75-mins) (DVD-R)

Ref: FH066D

Welcome to the 6th edition of our magazine for European rail enthusiasts. In this issue our major article is:

Miniatur-Wunderland. A behind the scenes special! A forthcoming Out & About will be in Hamburg so we have taken the opportunity to film one of the great model railways of the world including the new Scandinavian and Swiss sections. (25mins)

We follow this with a visit to the Belgian port of Antwerp and look at the prospects for growth in the container and fruit business and review developments elsewhere and how it affects the rail business in the country and beyond. (26mins)

From Antwerp we head south to Saxony to spend time on the metre gauge steam railways around the Harz mountains. (15mins)

Our 4th article takes us even further south : to Portugal and the recently electrified line along the Algarve between Tunes and the region's largest city and capital Faro.
