No, we have not run out of archive pre-1968 steam film! There are plenty more to come, but it is interesting to see what the steam enthusiast got up to when the fires were dropped in 1968. By following our series, you will find that steam never really went away! Our series will end in October 1971 when main line steam returned to BR. Although there were few preserved railways during this period, the Bluebell, Keighley, Lochty and Middleton lines were up and running. Industrial sites provided hundreds of engines still at work daily including some ex-BR tank engine types at collieries and on the London Transport railways. Overseas became a popular destination also especially as close as Calais and Boulogne where Pacifics still hauled trains including the GOLDEN ARROW. Germany and most of Europe, including behind the Iron Curtain for the adventurous, still had years of steam traction left. And there was always South Africa! There was still a further year with 4472 on main lines and occasionally other preserved engines strayed on to BR tracks if you knew about it. The series is an in depth look at all this.
