Vol. 1: Santa Fe to China Part 1

Vol. 1: Santa Fe to China Part 1

Ref: AC1001D

In this our first volume, we take a diverse look at Chinese steam in action in February 1991 at a time when this form of motive power was still dominant over large parts of the country.

We journey along the rarely visited 600mm gauge line based on Jijie in southern China with a Baldwin 0-10-0 in action.

Then there are stunning scenes in the Gobi Desert near Zhongwei where double-headed and triple-headed QJs of the Sante Fe 2-10-2 wheel arrangement can be seen hauling enormous freight trains.

At Changchun motive power depot there is an lot of continuous activity in and around the depot.

Finally we see JS Class 2-8-2s at work in the Hunjiang area of south-east Manchuria in temperatures of around –15C!

The Brush Class 31s are a long-lived type still to be seen widely around the network.

In 1993 they were very active on passenger services out of Liverpool Lime Street and the first part of this volume follows examples in various liveries on workings between Liverpool and Blackpool North as well as workings between Liverpool and Manchester Victoria during the few weeks in early 1993 when stock shortages elsewhere caused 31s to be drafted in to fill the gap.

Passenger workings on the Carnforth to Barrow line are also seen as well as some miscellaneous departmental workings on the West Coast Main Line at Winwick and at Chester.

All locations are identified and there is no distracting commentary.

Vol. 5: Industrial Steam Across Britain Vol.1

Vol. 5: Industrial Steam Across Britain Vol.1

Ref: AC1005D

Industrial steam in Britain survived for more than a decade into the 1970s after the end of steam on the BR network in 1968. Industrial enthusiast Geoff Monks travelled the length and breath of the country recording with cine film these last vestiges of steam.

In this first volume of our series of industrial steam across Britain we see steam working at collieries, power stations, docks and private industrial sites, most of which have now vanished just as completely as the steam engines that served them.

Well known colliery systems such as those at Waterside, Polkemmet, Bedlay, Bickershaw, Littleton and Mountain Ash are covered amongst others, together with glimpses of little visited power stations such as those at Lancaster and Neepsend as well as the better known sites such as Agecroft

Steam is seen at work at Falmouth Harbour and the Port of Par as well as such diverse sites at Whifflet Foundry and C,P.C Trafford Park.

Steam operations were still quite widespread in some parts of Africa in the mid 1970s and during this period Geoff Monks travelled to several countries in search of little visited lines and rare locomotive classes.

This volume depicts steam at work in Kenya, Angola, Mozambique and Swaziland, showing such delights as wood-burning Garratts on the Benguela Railway, narrow gauge Bagnall, Orenstean & Koppel and ALCO built engines on remote jungle lines and the world’s last Atlantic 4-4-2s in action in Mozambique.

In Kenya we see Maroon Garratts and named 2-8-2s whilst in Swaziland there are massive 4-8-2s on the ore trains.

A kaleidoscope of steam locomotive classes almost all of which have disappeared forever.

The first in a series featuring steam in normal everyday service on British Railways prior to 1968. This volume features the work of Ray Hammond who travelled the length and breadth of Britain recording on cine film the final years of BR steam in the 1960s. Here we depict steam on five of the six regions then operating showing the considerable variety of classes that could be seen.

We see ex-GWR locomotives with number and nameplates still intact, and an endless flow of Bulleid Pacifics passing to and from the west at Salisbury.

At Shrewsbury there are ex-LMS and ex-GWR types together and in the North-East we see East Coast Pacifics plus other classes.

In Scotland we see a fine array of steam power ranging from ex-LMS "Crabs" and Class 5s to the J36s, V2s, B1s and A2s of the former LNER as well as BR Standard classes.

The archive film is sourced from 8mm colour cine film and mastered on professional equipment. An authentic soundtrack has been added along with an informative commentary.

The third in our series featuring steam in normal everyday service on British Railways prior to 1968. This volume features the work of Ray Hammond who visited a variety of locations during the 1960s.

This volume depicts steam on four of the six regions then operating. Even at such a late date for steam, a considerable variety of classes could still be seen.

The Western Region is represented by the last day at Bath Green Park whilst on the Southern, Bulleid Pacifics still abound amongst the turmoil of electrification works.

An amazing intensity of steam working is seen on the Wirral and we see ex-LMS and BR classes at points such as Warrington and Wigan on the West Coast Main Line .

We conclude with a visit to the North-East where elderly pre-grouping classes were still hard a work around Blyth and Tyne Dock.

Until the early 1980s, an amazing array of steam power could still be found in the Republic of Indonesia and this programme features the work of Geoff Monks and Ray Hammond who visited each country in time to record this remarkable scene on cine film.

This is the first of a pair of programmes covering the two principle islands of the Repubic and it begin on the rack and adhesion worked sections of the West Sumatra system operated by 0-10-0 tanks of Class E10.

We then move to West Java where turn-of-the-century 4-4-0s operating alongside more modern steam power. At the one-tome mallett capital of the World, Cibatu, we see a class CC50 2-6-6-0 on the Garut branch and a DD52 2-8-8-0 working on the main line. Within a few years of being filmed, all of these rare classes had passed into history.

Ref: AC1011D

The fourth in our series featuring steam in normal everyday service on British Railways prior to the end of steam in 1968. Ray Hammond travelled Britain recording these final years of BR steam on cine film. In this volume he records the last full year of steam traction in 1967.

On the Southern, steam finished in July 1967. By then the majority of engines were unkempt but not unloved by their drivers, with many tales of Bulleid Pacifics thundering on at over 100mph! Throughout that summer we see a variety of scenes of Pacifics, BR Standards, Ivatts and USA dock tanks all leading up to that finale with well polished Bulleid Pacifics battling it out on the last day.

Over on the London Midland there are some splendid scenes on Shap where a seemingly endless procession of freight, parcels and even express passenger trains were still handled by steam power.

1967 was also the final year of steam working on the North Eastern Region. Here we have some evocative views around Ryhope, on the Silksworth branch and some scenes at Leeds Central during the last days of steam traction.

The archive film is sourced from 8mm colour cine film and mastered on professional equipment. An authentic soundtrack has been added along with an informative commentary.

Vol.13: Steam Across the World No. 4 - Pakistan in the 1970s (44-mins)

Ref: AC1013D

As part of the former British Empire of India it is not surprising that many of the steam locomotives which saw service in what became West Pakistan in 1947, had been supplied by builders based in the UK.

In contrast to the situation in post-independence India, where a domestic locomotive manufacturing industry had flooded the railways with modern standard types, Pakistan soldiered on with its elderly colonial stock. In the 1970s, Ray Hammond visited the country to record these remarkable classes on cine-film.

We begin on the metre gauge in South-East Pakistan where B.E.S.A . 4-6-0s and I.R.S. 2-8-2s are seem on the remnants of a once larger colonial system.

Various locations on the broad gauge are then visited where classic types such as SPS 4-4-0s and SGS 0-6-0s are seen in profusion.

A journey is also taken along the Khyber Pass on the once weekly passenger train.

The archive film is sourced from 8mm colour cine film and mastered on professional equipment. An authentic soundtrack has been added along with an informative commentary.

South America has provided the steam enthusiast with a great variety of types for many years and in the 1970s, Ray Hammond visited Brazil, Argentin and Chile to record some of these classes on cine film.

We begin in the sugar growing areas of Brazil where almost every locfomotive in view is different. Moving south, immaculate Baldwins are seen on the VFCO followed by visits to Perus Cement and the Santos a Jundai cable inclines while super power is seen in action on the E.F.Dona Teresa Cristina system.

In argentina, Pacifics on the General Belgrano, a 4-40- on the Urquiza and the 4-8-0s and 2-6-2Ts on the Roca, amongst others, provide a rich variety which was approaching its demise. A visit to the Esquel line which is still extant in the 1990s concludes this section.

A brief look at southern Chile with its elderly steam types in evidence rounds off the programme.

Delightful scenes on the 2'6" lines in the area are interspersed by visits to braod gauge venues where the impressive WPs worked alongside much older types.

Further broad gauge activity is seen around Delhi before the arrival of overhead wires and following a visit to Howrah, Calcutta, the programme concludes on the famous Darjeeling to Himalya Railway.

This programme is the second of two programmes featuring the work of Ray Hammond who travelled India in the 1970s when many thousands of steam locomotives could still be found at work.

We first visit Daund and Kurduvadi with a variety of narrow gauge types on view. At the opposite end of the scale, classes such as XB and XD are seen on the Broad Gauge. at Secunderabad, together with metre gauge types working local and long distance traffic.

Further broad gauge activity is seen around Madras and Erode while metre gauge centres visited include Mayuram, the Niligiri Railway and Mysore. The programme concluded with a visit to the Mysore Iron & Steel complex where ancient ex-main line classes were still at work as well as pure industrial types which were often supplied by British builders.

The former West Germany was one of the later West European countries to eliminate steam and in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Geoff Monks and Ray Hammond both visited the Federal Republic to record almost all the remaining steam classes on cine film.

Beginning in the centre of the country, we see examples of the small class of 65s at work around Aschaffenburg before moving to the Mosel Valley route where Pacifics, 2-6-2s and 2-10-0s are seen in action. Ex-Prussian 38s and 78s plus other types are seen in the Black Forest area while 03s at Ulm and 01s at Hof round off our tour of the southern part of the country.

Moving northwards, intense steam activity is seen on the Osnabruck-Hamburg line just before electrification and the programme concludes with a look at the former 01.10 Pacifics and 2-10-0s running between Rheine and Emden with an ex-Prussian 94 seen at Emden.

Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia, has been called the land of the Garratts for this type of motive power dominated the main line steam scene for many years and some examples were still at work in the late 1990s.

Beginning at Bulawayo in 1975, Garratts and a 12th. class are seen on station pilot duties. Moving out onto the main line to Gwelo, types 14A, 15 and 16A are seen as well as a South African GMA on hire.

The West Nicholson branch is next visited with 14As working goods and mixed trains through rolling bush and through more rugged scenery. The section concludes with pacing shots of a 15A + 16A combination.

The final section covers the Victoria Falls line, firstly around Wankie with 15ths and 20ths passing through fine scenery and then to Victoria Falls. Not forgotten is the Wankie Colliery system with its green 4-8-2s.

Woth informative commentary and dubbed sound. Sourced from 8mm colour cine film mastered on professional equipment.

Large scale railway preservation has now existed in Britain for longer than the Big Four groups and much longer than steam ran under British Railways.

Here we look at the earlier years of the preservation scene with some views stretching back into the 1960s. At certain points, recent views of familiar places are shown for comparison.

We begin on the Ffestiniog Railway in the late 1960s with the stock still in green and cream or brown. Other Welsh narrow gauge lines visited include the Talyllyn and the Welshpool & Llanfair.

Moving into England and working from South to North, we see the Bluebell Railway in its small engine era, an 0-4-2T on the Cholsey to Wallingford branch and such vanished locations as the Dowty site at Ashchurch and Dinting Railway Centre. In all around twenty venues are visited across the country.

This programme covers visits made by Alan Beard to Turkey in the early and mid- 1980s and features the Irmak to Zonguldak line, the Bandirma branch, the Izmir to Afyon line via Alasehir and the Odemis branch. The spectacular Zonguldak line is dominated by the Vulcan Ironworks 2-10-Os of series 563xx but also seen are 'Middle East' 2- 8-2s on Zonguldak area suburbans and an S160 shed pilot at Karabuk. Moving south, a Kriegslok is banked out of Bandirma by a Middle East' while later in the journey, severe grades require the assistance of a second Kriegsiok. An example of the same class also requires assistance at one stage while working the Izmir to Afyon 'Posta' and the programme concludes with a 2-10-2 working the Odemis branch mixed.

With informative commentary and 'live' sound taken from the original 8mm movie film plus a small amount of dubbed sound, Mastered on professional equipment.

In 1995 a new railway was opened in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of Northern China. Remarkably, the line was designed to use steam operation and as the 21st Century dawned this type of motive power was still in daily use along the full length of this 943 km. route.

This programme covers operations over the spectacular Jingpeng Pass which the line ulilises to cross a mountain range approximately halfway along the route. Spectacular civil engineering features abound along this 48 km section, including .fme horseshoe curves, seven tunnels and numerous viaducts. QJ class 2-10-2s, mostly double headed, toil though a mountainous landscape on this, probably the last, remaining long-distance steam operation in the World. The sequences were taken in early 2000 when freezing temperatures ensured spectacular smoke effects!

This programme covers visits made by Alan Beard to Turkey in the early 1 980s and begins with operations on the former Smyrna-Cassaba and Ottoman main lines out of Izmir These routes were dominated by the wartime 'Kriegsloks' and 57001 class 2-1O-2s. We then take a look at the network of branches built by the Ottoman Railway to the south-east of Izmir and which became the last stamping ground for the elderly Prussian G8 type 0-8-Os working quaint mixed trains.

Moving eastwards, more 2-10-2s are seen at Afyon before following a mixed train westwards along the Smyrna-Cassaba route. For the latter part of the journey a 'Kriegslok' double heads a GlO type 0-10-0. The pro granime concludes with a look at the splendid Henschel 2-8-2s working over the Konya-Afyon line.

Vol.48: BR Steam Scenes No.6 - South Wales and the South West (54-mins)

Ref: AC1048D

Featuring scenes on the Western and Southern Regions of British Railways mainly between 1962 and 1964.
Beginning in Wales we make journeys from Carmarthen to Aberystwyth, Swansea Victoria to Craven Arms, Three Cocks to Moat Lane and Aberdare to Pontypool, all behind steam power.

Wherever we go, we observe abundant evidence that this was still a steam railway with stations and infrastructure largely intact.

Moving into England, expresses and local services around Gloucester and Cheltenham are seen before the cuts of the 1960s.

A detailed look at the Somerset and Dorset main line is followed by scenes on the delightful Hemyock branch and the programme concludes with views around Lymington and Swanage.

The established author and photographer Hugh Ballantyne is well know for his still photographs of the railway scene but what is less well known is that in the 1960s, he and his wife Toni, also took a considerable quantity of cine film. This programme covers a variety of locations on the Western Region and Southern Region of British Railways between 1962 and 1966 when steam power still featured on many services, including express passenger workings.

Opening on their home territory of the time, the first scenes are on the Somerset and Dorset at Bath Green Park in 1962 when 9F 2-10-0s could be seen on trains such as the "Pines Express". Views along the Somerset & Dorset follow, right up to the closure in 1966.

Other routes covered include Barnstaple to Taunton, the Hemyock branch, the Cheddar Valley line, Worcester to Oxford, the Kingham area, the Fairford Branch, Bere Alston to Callington, Reading to Redhill and the Severn Valley Railway at Bridgnorth in 1963.

Vol.66: Hugh Ballantyne Slide Shows No.1 - LMS 0F to 7P (100-mins)

Ref: AC1066D

For the first time, one of Hugh Ballantyne's famous slide shows given at venues up and down the country is being offered on DVD. The images are mostly in colour, going back to 1961, supplemented by a small selection of b & w images going back to 1950, over 175 images in all. These are presented in a magnificent slide show of optically-scanned and enhanced pictures with a full informative commentary. The show begins with an overview of all the classes that were to be encompassed in the proposed 1946 LMS locomotive standardisation scheme along with views of many other former LMS and constituent types that continued to work for much of the BR steam era. The next section contains overall views of a number of ex-LMS steam depots and then we take a journey down the West Coast Main Line with superb lineside views at many locations between Euston and the Clyde Valley. This is followed by scenes taken on various other lines that had belonged to the LMS. The DVD concludes with scenes of ex-LMS locos working over "foreign" metals in the UK plus a small number of views depicting LMS-designed 8F 2-8-0s overseas.

PLEASE NOTE that the images in this volume are of SLIDES and NOT moving video.

Vol.71: Industrial Slide Show Part 3 (56-mins)

Vol.71: Industrial Slide Show Part 3 (56-mins)

Ref: AC1071D

This is the third of our industrial slide shows, in this case featuring steam power at National Coal Board locations in England. The pictures in this all-colour album were taken mostly between the mid-1960s and mid-to-late 1970s by three industrial enthusiasts.

Beginning in the North-East, the large systems based on Ashington and Philadelpia are featured as well as visits to individual mines. Chapter 2 covers Yorkshire where many of the locos on view sport the various modifications applied by the Hunslet Engine Co. during the 1960s.

North-West England was very much "Austerity" territory and there are a number of fine action shots of these engines at locations such as the Walkden system and Bickershaw.

The final chapter covers the Midlands and includes some rare views of the East Midlands coalfields which were mostly dieselised at a relatively early date.

With an iinformative commentary and playable on a normal DVD player. PLEASE NOTE that the images in this volume are of SLIDES and NOT moving video.
