By the year 1850 Messrs G & J Burns owned and controlled a massive shipping empire which encompassed the Glasgow to Belfast and Liverpool routes. They were the power behind the great Cunard Company, and last but not least, operated the more lucrative West Highland services. On 13th.February 1851 they handed over their West Highland services to David Hutcheson and his brother Alexander. David Hutcheson retired in 1876 and his brother Aexander in 1878, leaving David McBrayne the sole owner of a famous fleet.

"McBrayne" - a name that was to become synonymous with the Highlands and Island of Scotland for almost 100 years.

With film from C.M.Liddell's collection, combined with that from other sources, this film revives some happy memories of this famous fleet of red and black funnelled ships from a bygone age.

In 'Clyde Steamer Memories' I have tried to take a nostalgic journey back in time to the golden years when the world famous Clyde Steamer fleet, steamed gracefully around the many piers, set amidst magnificent scenery of the Firth of Clyde.
